Jones vs Matyushenko Confimred For UFC: On Versus 2
Posted on May 3, 2010, 05:22 AM by Daniel CassidyDespite being rumoured for the past few weeks, all systems are go, with a bout between Jon Jones and Vladimir Matyushenko confirmed for August 1st in Utah. It will be the UFC's second fight card on the versus network, with Jones once again performing headline duties.
Veteran fighter Matyushenko it seems is part of Dana White's plan of giving Jones another year to improve, before he cracks the top 5 lightheavyweights and moves into title contention. The russian is on his second stay in the UFC, he holds an overal record of 24-4 (5-2 for UFC) He was the final IFL lightheavyweight champion before it's collapse, and lost a unanimous decision to Tito Ortiz for the UFC LHW strap way back at UFC 33.
Jones though could be regarded as the most exciting up and comer in recent years. He holds an overall record of 10-1, with his only loss coming as a technical dq against Matt Hamil, a fight which Jones was winning. He has fought 5 times inside the octagon, with the loss to Hamil aside, he has beaten Andre Gusmao, Stephan Bonnar, Jake O'Brien and Brandon Vera.
In Jones' last bout he effectively put Vera out of commision for the time being, defeating the Mauy Thai specialist after just 3 mins and 19 seconds, breakinh Vera's orbital bone in the process. Vera is still not allowed to fight even today as a result of the injury, which saw three bones being broken in his face with asingle elbow. It also earned Jones his firts Knockout of the night award.
While many will look past Matyushenko, the whiley veteran holds wins over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Pedro Rizzo, so writing the Janitor off just yet may seem foolish.
