Jon Jones: I would definitely take a "right fight" at Heavyweight

“I kind of like how Randy (Couture) has done it all throughout his MMA career. With the right fight, I would definitely take a fight at heavyweight, but my dreams and my goals are all at the light heavyweight division, and I don’t want anything to get twisted saying I want to fight Cain (Velasquez) or any of the top heavyweights. If there was a cool fight stylistically for me at heavyweight, I’d give something to the fans and fight at a bigger weight.” - full interview at MMAWeekly.com

Heavyweight thoughts aside, Jon Jones will look to prove his worth once again on February 5th, this time facing the unbeaten Ryan Bader at the main card action of UFC 126 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jones is currently 5-1 in the UFC, having his only loss coming via DQ in a fight against Matt Hamill. As for Bader, "Darth" is 5-0, currently holding an unbeaten record of 12-0. The winner of the fight will find himself in a leading position for a shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight title.

    I like Jon, and he is great LHW. But I just dont see him winning against Cain, Nelson, Carwin or Mir.

    Winner of Bader vs Jones should fight Rampage.

    And yes, I know Rampage is propably fighting against Thiago. But IMO Thiago should fight winner of Griffin vs Franklin.

    Jones agrees with that too. Thats why he said he wouldnt take on the top contenders at HW. Just a good stylistic match up for himself. If hes not going to make a run for the title at HW then i dont think he should bother. Keep moving up the ranks at LHW or if hes champion, then he should focus on keeping that belt

    He might not beat top 5 HW right now, but I'd like Struve as an opponent. Both young, long limbed guys with good striking...

    With Jones's frame i think all he need is fridge full of horse meat and he could bulk up and hang with anyone at heavyweight

    When he is done with the LHW division and bulks up a little bit, he would have no problem being a top 265er. IMO he is already walking around at 230.

    @Dutch

    When he's done with the LHW division LOL look I'm a big Jon Jones fan but people over rate what they have actually seen from him. To be clear i'm not saying he's not a special talent etc etc but there are misconceptions about where his overall game is. I've heard people talk about how great his striking yet when has he displayed striking from fight to fight CONSISTENTLY, he hasn't yet. If he takes down Bader and smashes him it'll be a great win but i'll still be waiting to see the improvement in his striking when he get's his title shot I expect Shogun to be the champ and that reach advantage won't hinder Shogun as much as people think and I don't see him throwing Shogun round like a rag doll.

    I'm a huge Jon Jones fan too and the only thing I've seen that maybe he's over rated is how high he's ranked in the LHW division list on here. But from his fights I don't see anything that makes him over rated, other then his 1rst few fights he's literally walked through the rest without breaking a sweat given they're not top 10 fighters BUT they're MMA fighters and he made them look like babies. ur saying that he can't be as good as we think because he hasn't showed u his striking? maybe because he's a real smart fighter and used his advantage to win fights EASILY, I think you'll see some of his striking in this fight with Bader but I also want to see his wrestling against some1 like Bader because if he can throw Bader around then who can't he? his wrestling converts into MMA AMAZINGLY and he mixes it with all the Judo throws and trips theres so many things u needa watch with a guy like him

    at the same time i didnt think he would throw hamil or vladimir like a rag doll either and both are far better grapplers than shogun. although at this stage i belive shogun would school him on the feet

    @silva

    You make some good points. I was very specific about what aspect of his game i'm waiting to see improvement in and thats his striking, your right he has won fights easily and demonstrated his top game is devastating but i wanna see more from him he's no where near his full potential in the striking department. You mention his ranking being too high on this site and that just adds weight too my point. And even if he throws Bader around which i doubt he will doesn't mean he'll do the same to the real top guys. Rashad Evans and Shogun couldn't execute a takedown on Machida but Rampage could where's the logic in that considering Rampage has less grappling skills overall then both Evans and Shogun. Don't misunderstand me I know what a freaky talent like Jones is but still he's not the full package yet.

    I see wat you're saying. totally understand and it's opinions for a reason can't hate on that. I'm not saying he's to his full potential either that would be an insult to him saying @ 23 years old he's done learning. he's 1 of those freak talents that I see limitless results from. theres people like GSP who've Been in this game for a LONG time and are still learning and adding things. n I see Jones being like that. hes got the natural gifts and the drive to succeed so I 100% agree he's NOWHERE near done growing as a fighter. BUT I do think that his striking is better then you're imagining in all these fights he's been winning via GnP I'm sure countless hours in the gym are going into the striking the gameplans for the fighters he's had lately just havn't shown it. he will though soon and I'm thinkin vs Bader he'll use a real mixed Bag of tricks.

    he's not huge threre are fighters that are bigger than him at lhw, he is just tall and has long limbs, don't think it would be a good idea to fight at heavyweight.

    Im not saying he could not make weight. But to bulk up to 265pounds. It takes a lot from your cardio if you rush it. Still it could be interesting if he would move up in weight. It would be interesting to see him against some top 15 HW first. And if he beats them, then he could fight some top 5-10 HW.

    Lets be realistic, Jon Jones is in his early 20'as and is very slender for his frame/height.

    If he decided to I don't see any reason he couldn't bulk up and be a permanent heavyweight in the 250 - 265 range ala Alistair Overeem. If you look at Alistair when he was in his early 20's he had a very similar shape to Jon Jones.

    So whos been his biggest test Hammil or Vera? Come on, lets see him really tested already and get past all the hype. He looks like a force in MMA but Im ready to see him against some top fighters and hes 11-1-0... I think its time to move him forward and see.

    I believe he said he walks around at about 230 or 235, then he cuts back to 205 for the weigh in, then against Matyushenko he was back up to 226 for the fight. He gives a lot of credit to his nutritionist, and rightly so. Huge weight swings like that are crazy.

    I hope Jones can stay focused throughout his career. Him being compared to a young Brandon Vera is quite a compliment but look where Brandon is now. I bet if Jones can get the belt, Dana White will do whatever he can to make sure that Jones doesn't beat Liddell's streak and that Liddell remains the most proficient striker in that weight class.

    the right fight.. I would love to see weight classes mean somthing, not a bunch of 220-240 lbs guys dropping to 205 or even 185 or 190 pounders dropping to 170, then we would see real p4p fighters not guys that could be HW fighting middleweight

    As exciting as this sounds, I think Jon Jones is looking way ahead. At the age of 23 and only 6 fights in the UFC, I think he should focus more on the current division. Looks like he's ego is starting to get a little bit affected (even with him saying "I don’t want anything to get twisted saying I want to fight Cain (Velasquez) or any of the top heavyweights. If there was a cool fight stylistically for me at heavyweight, I’d give something to the fans and fight at a bigger weight.” )

    With that said... If Jones can bulk up in a healthy way and compete in the HW division.. i do believe he could be a serious contender!

    Yeah, the Vera fight where Jones sat in his guard while Brandon tried to be sneaksy with a single submission attempt for close to a minute before Jones broke his face. If Jones made the mistake of sitting in Frank Mir's guard for that long, he might as well just hand him the limb he wants ripped off.

    I like Jon Jones, and like any great prospect, I am optimistic about his chances. The Bader fight will be his first true test--since Bader is another golden prospect, with loads of talent.

    One fault I find in Jones' game is his not utilizing his jab enough. With an 84-1/2 inch reach, and his speed and mass, a killer jab would soften up opponents from a safe distance, before he went in for the kill.

    As with all prospects, the jury is still out--but right now, I have no trouble believing Jones could take the LHW belt, and eventually move up to HW and take that belt.

    The Jones vs. Bader fight is a huge fight for the future of the LHW division.
