According to report on ESPN.com/MMA, former UFC Welterweight title challenger Jon Fitch will make his Octagon return against Johny Hendricks at UFC 141 on December 30. The event will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, headlined by a Heavyweight blockbuster between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem.

In his last bout, Jon Fitch fought BJ Penn (UFC 127 on February 27th) in a fight that ended in a disappointing, and a somewhat controversial draw. Since then, Fitch was scheduled for a rematch with "The Prodigy" but was forced to pull out due to a shoulder injury. But now, it looks like "The Ultimate Grinder", or simply - the man to win 9 fights in the UFC via decision, is ready to get back in action.

ESPN:

A welterweight fight between former No. 1 contender Jon Fitch and rising prospect Johny Hendricks has been agreed to for UFC 141 on Dec. 30 in Las Vegas, a source confirmed to ESPN.com.Both fighters have verbally committed to the bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, the source said.

Jon Fitch's opponent, Johny Hendricks, is currently 11-1 in his Mixed Martial Arts campaign. Hendricks was on the rise from 2008 to 2010, winning 6 consecutive bouts in the UFC and WEC. The run came to an end against Rick Story (Decision), but Johny Hendricks recovered with two back-to-back victories over TJ Waldburger and Mike Pierce.

I actually think Fitchs stand up has been pretty good and I just feel he will out persist Hendricks for the takedown.

Another interesting fact: most of those have been five round fights. I think Fitch would finish more people inside of five rounds, seeing how so many of his fights have ended with him close to a submission or Tko.

Thiago Alves is not currently in the top 10, so I'm gonna assume you meant top 10 at the time he fought them. In that case, Diego Sanchez and Paulo Thiago were also top 10 when Fitch fought them.

How on earth did Hendricks earn this fight? Not that I care, the longer Fitch stays irrelevant in the division the easier it is for me to stay awake.

He's 6-1 in the UFC. What more do you want from him?

Jon Fitch is 23-3 and has wins over people like Diego Sanchez, Paulo Thiago and Thiago Alves. Not to mention a draw against BJ in his last fight. His last loss was against GSP. Hendricks' most impressive wins are over Brenneman and Mike Pierce, and his last loss was against Rick Story....

People have gotten title shots for less. (Dan Hardy)

Also, fighting Fitch isn't some kind of reward. In all likelihood, Hendricks will lose a clear decision to the 2nd best MMA wrestler at 170. (I don't care what his credentials are, Fitch does this to everybody not named BJ or GSP.) And it's not like he's going to make extra money by fighting Fitch. The fight will be on the main card, but not the main event. People don't buy ppv's because Jon Fitch is on them. If he wins, of course, he has a good case for a title shot, but that won't happen.

The real question is: What did Hendricks do to deserve this?

And hell, Fitch did it to BJ once the surprise of Penn trying to initiate a wrestling match wore off.

I like Fitch--and he has proven to be a winner. The guy is amazing and he gets dumped on by all and sundry. In the third round with BJ Penn--he was literally beating the crap out of BJ Penn--another round and Penn would have been KO'd for sure.

Fitch has great wrestling and defensive BJJ--and his standup is not stellar--but it is pretty good. He managed to smack GSP hard quite a few times. I know that both Firch and GSP are burning to get finishes--they hear the disgruntled fans wanting a finish.

All I can say is that in a real fight--if a wrestler pins you--you are screwed. There is no bell, and he can take his time to utterly demolish and humble you. The top fighter should be active and improving his position--or the ref should stand them up--but if he is sitting on top of you raining elbows--that's MMA.

Even GSP when asked about his toughest opponent he has ever faced other than the one currently in line he replied ''John Fitch''.

fitch deserves a bigger name to fight, the problem is there are not so many available right now. and he wont fight Kos because they are teamates.... this should be a warmup to meet condit, BJ or diaz.
