Jon Fitch clueless regarding lack of title shot

I feel bad for this guy, he doesn't get much recognition, even though he fights boring he still winning at the same time.

Finish fights Jon its pretty simple, dont throw just enough punches from guard to not get stood up to win the rounds.

Even tho Fitch has won so many fights after losing to GSP, imo he hasnt shown anything new to beat GSP, his stand up hasnt looked amazing, his Bjj hasnt looked amazing and his wrestling has looked the same it always did...that prolly the reason not too many ppl are petitioning to see Fitch get that title shot again

Jon Fitch is a discrase to MMA PERIOD. Noone cares about Fitch and most (REAL FANS) would celebrate if he retired TODAY. Most fans like mto watch REALFIGHTERS not lay n pray, snoozefest, lehumping cheaters who use the wrester friendly rules that were written up by Jeff Blatnick (GOLD MEDALIST WRESTLING) The reason Fitch will NEVER EVER get another shot at the title is because he doesn 't deserve one. Who has Fitch beaten in the top 10 in the last 3-4 years? Dana says Fitch lost 2 rounds to a lightweight he outweighed by 30 p;ounds at fight time and BJ tore Fitch's shoulder apart which cost the UFC over 100k surgery/rehab. Dana says rematches are reserved for fights that were either close or bad judges decsions. GSP/ Fitch was a one-sided beatdown of epic proportions, 2 judges scored that fight 50-43. Fitch's face looked like hamburger for 3 months and GSP didn't have amark on him and you BOZO's talk like it was a close fight. WRONG!!! Fitch took a beating. THE REAL top WW contenders are Ellenberger, Condit, Rory Mcdonald, Diaz, Fitch wouldn't last ONE round with Ellenberger, in fact he would get KO'd just as fast as Sheilds did. Fitch is so far out of the WW title picture he will never even be mentioned again and he only has himself to blame for telling Dana on T.V in front of EVERYONE that no matter what he will NEVER fight Koscheck. Koscheck would KO Fitch and for you peopel on here who keep saying Koscheck got 2 title shots at GSP you are so NEWBIe its laughable. Koscheck and GSP fought a 3 round contender fight first time. Fitch is tghe most ujn-pmarketable fighter in MMA history yet you guys cry foul because UFC has no desire to give the fans a fight NOONE but 3 NOBODYS want to see. I agree 100%, Fitch deserves a title shot but he hasn't shown anything that suggests he has evolved or changed enough as a fighter to beat GSP. It's going to have to happen eventually but everyone (particularly Dana/Joe Silva) seems to be in the opinion that the fight would just go exactly the same way.

Disagree. Nick Diaz former StrikeForce Champ on a 11 win streak PLUS he just defeated Bj Penn who is Jon Fitch's last opponent that he FAILED to beat. I dont see how you can get a Title shot being that your last fight was a DRAW with an opponent that only won ONCE in his last 5 fights.

The last fight was hardly a draw in my opinion. Even BJ said he was defeated by Fitch. Nick did a great job with BJ but R1 was BJ much like in the Fitch fight and R2 was Diaz by a wide margin where as Fitch was only slightly better and R3 was a beatdown of BJ by both Fitch and Diaz. I think Fitch is a bad style for Diaz and would have a great chance at winning the fight. I think anyone could have been a former strikeforce champ from the UFC top tier fighters.

The way I look at it is give Fitch the deserved shot and if he loses twice than it will be over anyway for a long time. GSP is not much more exciting and Fitch has done some pretty good fights recently even without the finish. Why not give the number 2 his shot and then be done with it.

You got it in a nutshell. Under Dana MMA will never be a legitimate sport. UFC is a business first and foremost and probably always will be. Fitch deserves another shot, but to be fair the WW division is mega stacked with several guys in the mix for a shot. So long as there are other guys in the mix Dana will keep overlooking Fitch.

Jon Fitch is kinda in a tight spot right now. Dana only wants to set up fighters who are popular with the fans for title shots, but it's only the best of the best that even give Fitch a challenge. It basically sets him up as a roadblock that stymies the rest of the division's chance to fight for the belt... unless they're popular enough to skip past Fitch. I don't like it at all really, it kinda makes the belt seem less legitimate, since the challengers are less people that deserve the shot and more people who will sell a ticket, which sucks because it's supposed to be about who is the best fighter.



I think Hendricks should get kicked to the curb and Condit should fight Fitch, since the title shot was unfairly taken from him. Have the winner fight GSP. It'd be a good style match I think; the man who always finishes vs the ultimate grinder.

Why exactly did Josh Koscheck get a second shot then?

I think the problem is honestly just a string of bad luck.

1. His #1 contender fight ended in a draw

2. He got injured (and as serious on at that)

3. The UFC got the Strikeforce WW Champ who happens to be one of the most exciting fighters to watch.

4. Lastly uneducated UFC fans give him a bad wrap of being boring (Heaven forbid he do the exact same thing GSP has been doing has last few fights)

So he has more ways to win than Fitch and still managed to suck more against GSP? How exactly is that a point in his favor? If your argument is that Kos has better striking than Fitch, Fitch landed almost as many strikes in the second round of his fight with GSP than Kos landed in both of his GSP fights COMBINED.

Jake Ellenberger was actually contracted to fight Fitch, but they pulled him from the fight to replace him with BJ Penn after Penn destroyed Matt Hughes.

If you look good, fight good and are popular then it will come quickly because the fans will be asking to see it...Fitch just hasn't made his mark as exciting enough. He is brilliant fighter though. There could be a personality clash as well.



Dana white hears what the fans want, he is surrounded by fighters, promotors. FIght have to be sold as stories.....otherwise noone buys the book.

The best at what...putting on a really boring point fighting wrestlers match? Everyone knows the rules and judges need to change. The promotion, the fighters, and most fans all know it. When they finally do we won't see fighters like him doing very well. GSP (as much as I hate his style as of late) has a far larger toolbag than Fitch ever will. He could adapt. But fighters like fitch need more practice at other aspects of Mma. He only uses the rules to win.

If the scoring changed for MMA, Fitch would still win his fights. He has the second highest strike total landed in UFC history (1973) , losing out to GSP by only 43 strikes (2016) , and leaving him 350 ahead of BJ Penn in 3rd (1623). He spends almost all of his fights shutting down his opponent and beating the stuffing out of them. If you were to change the rules in such a way as to make Fitch's dominant performances somehow losses, it would be fairly obvious that you were doing it. You probably would have pissed off Couture too.



Here's a thought: if a fighter has really awesome BJJ and good wrestling skills, people don't lay on top of them because they're dangerous off their back. Maybe, just maybe, if someone is held on their back and dominated it's.... their own fault for not being able to do anything about it?

Do you think it has to do with how many fights he has been in, in the ufc? How many pillow punches, rabit punches do they count? Fitch is boring as he'll to watch and you don't have to listen to me about how the rules will change. Stalling and yellow cards for instance. Stand ups. Fitch is good but extremely over rated. Especially his bjj. He is a phenomenal wrestler. But very one dimensional.

I'd like to see you sit there and take a round of pillow punches. he gets zero credit from the numbskulls for the ability to dominate purely because he lacks a bit of power. The skill required to dominate world class fighters time and time again is a remarkable and rare talent which Fitch has. meatheads want to see tank Abbott style fights but the true MMA fan wants to see skill.

Uh no. I want to see martial arts. One of my favorite fighters is machida. I don't like tank abbot. I like Dan Henderson. Fitch is boring. He is a one demineional fighter. Sure he can dominate with the use of judges and their lack of knowledge in ground fighting. 9 of his last 10 fights are decisions. He hasn't finished some one in 9 fights. That's got to be a ufc record.

If you want to see martial arts then what are you complaining about. He certainly is not 1 dimensional as he has been repeatedly out striking his opponents as of late even Alves. He is only missing the finish and i don't think it's because he can't I think he is a 5 round fighter that wears down his opponents. thaqts why his finishing attempts are always in R3 at the end of the round. If he could always fight 5 rounds we would likely see a lot of finishes as barely anyone in that division can keep up with him.

Wrestling IS a martial art. Fighters who want to finish off all their opponents by knockout still go and learn BJJ so they don't get their arm ripped off trying to do it. People who want to throw punches still practice their Muay Thai to avoid maneuvers they're not interested in using themselves. Why is wrestling any different? All the wrestler is doing is controlling his opponent in such a way that they can't effectively fight back, while the wrestler can continue to do damage. It's not the wrestler's fault their opponent isn't as good at it as they are, just like it's not their fault some viewers have ADD and can't appreciate any fight that doesn't end in a finish.

He is boring. I appreciate his attempt to learn how to strike better. Put him with shields and see how great he is. Of course that may be the most boring fight in ufc history.

I was reffering to the second fight with alves which was a decision but he was striking very accurately and quickly too.

Yeah it kind of sucks for him. I think he would of already gotten a title shot if he finished his fights. Also he had a draw with BJ Penn his last fight so that pushed him even further from the title shot.

It's not really hard to understand. Just look at the way Diaz handled BJ and then think back at the ground and snooze that Jon gave us in his fight against BJ. No comparison.

BJ showed up with a gameplan so unexpected it actually made Top 10 lists for most unexpected moments in MMA for that year. BJ really gave the fight his best effort, and despite that Fitch turned it around on him and gave him a beating so severe in the third round that BJ said he felt like he'd "been run over by a truck". Against Diaz, BJ showed up crying like he'd already made the decision to retire before the fight, then looked like he'd been kicked in the nuts for rounds 2 and 3, just offering up his body as Diaz's speedbag.

bj showed (according to him) in the best shape of his life for Diaz. Diaz will also dominate fitch. His bjj is that good and he has way better tdd than people think. Go ahead and rewatch the Sherk fight. Fitch is a great wrestler one of the best. But he is a great round staller too.

Fitch was a new BJJ Black Belt when he fought GSP, which was over 3 years ago. It's incredibly hard to even get a submission in place and he's almost impossible to submit. I think he intentionally sticks his head in chokes just to make his opponents arms tired. Nick's an exciting fighter with great BJJ, but honestly, what's the best fighter he's submitted? Takanori Gomi? Scott Smith? Jon Fitch would wreck the both of them. Barring him having Fitch rocked hard when he goes for it, Diaz is not good enough to submit Fitch. I think he could knock Fitch out, but I don't think his wrestling is good enough to keep it standing. He'd get smothered and beat up.

If only Jon Fitch knew that playing safe is a champ's privilege, maybe he'd know what to do in order to get a shot at the welterweight crown.

All i need is 1 reason to explain why he doenst deserve a title shot... Look at LowKick's current WW top 10 Rankings, He hasn't defeated ONE fighter on that list.

Nobody wants to have to fight him either because they want a title shot. Nobody gets title shots when they try and take on Fitch first. He is the one that GSP said was his toughest fight of all and that was long after his fight with Fitch unlike now when everyone he currently faces is his toughest match. Fitch is a beast that nobody wants to fight because he does what all fighters hate and that is slowly grind you down. It's the same as getting shot dead or tortured first, w3hat would you prefer a clean KO or 5 rounds of smashing with cuts and bruises you'll feel for a long time. I actually think most of the division are afraid to fight him as it's unlikely they will get past him and then they lose their shot.

Dana is scared to put fighters against Fitch because he will derail any and everyone's title hopes. The fact that he isn't fighting the top guys is all Dana's fault. A lot of people can have one fight after losing against a champ and they will get another shot. Fitch is obviously getting unfair treatment and that really sucks.

Fitch is boring but he does have a record that should put him in title contention. Shields and Diaz had more consecutive wins when they were awarded title shots but Condit only has 4 to Fitch's 5 so he should be next in line. Honestly, until title shots are awarded based on record MMA cannot claim to be a legitimate sport. Imagine if the #3 ranked team were awarded a spot in the Super Bowl instead of the #2 ranked team. Would football be considered a legitimate sport?

They do. That's what play offs are for. The number 1 team can face the number 7 team or the number 4 and 5 team end up in the bowl.

There are no play offs in MMA now other than belator. Fitch's record is do to a match making system not because he fought the best. The system has many flaws. By your definition Diaz has a better record. I personally believe rankings and tournaments should be used rather than event match making. But Fitch isn't part of that system. The scoring is also bogus. There are very few bjj, sambo, judo, judges that even understand what they are watching as far as reversals, submission attempts, nullifying a top game, and position changes which all take as much skill as leg kicks, jabs, and teet's. In this system they are not scored at all. But even minor striking is. It's ridiculous at this point and all the fighters know it.



Sure you can use the rules to win but that's not what a sport is like some one claimed. A sport is played within the rules and teams in any sports that use the rules to win are generally frowned apon. Like people who draw fouls dramatically in basketball or soccer for instance. It's people who play their hearts out that most fans admire. Fitch doesn't strike me as that guy. He seems to me to be a talented fighter who plays below his "all out level" to be safe and win. It's my personal opinion (and that of many fans not just "meatheads" ) that it is boring.

You are right about the points system but your comparison about drawing fouls is bulla. You will also find many of the better fighters do not fight all out either as it is risky. Singling out Fitch for doing a smart thing that many others do and then regarding it as a negative not a positive is IMO a meathead opinion. He fights smart, defeats world class fighters using his 'art' and don't forget the 'mixed' in MMA either. If someone like Fitch were to listen to opinions like yours and then go all out in his next fight and get KO'd he really would be a fool. Winning is paramount, not satisfying some meatheads desires.

To clarify, Fitch should be next not Condit.

He (Fitch) needs to take the Sonnen/Diaz approach-- Talk shit to stirr up some onlookers so the mainstream MMA fan will want to watch, real simple, oh and don't put on a snooze fest of a fight, people will stop watching you attempt to fight and starting talking with each other. Just keep their attention with a heavy pace and maybe just maybe a fight that doesn't go the distance.

This is MMA, and whatever tactics it takes to win, within the rules, is fair game. This is a sport and a win is a win. If a team plays in the Superbowl with a grinding ground game, and ekes out a win by only one point, they are still superbowl champions. If the other team or fans say, yeah, but they won in a boring fashion, they would be the object of ridicule and accused of sour grapes.



If Dana really wanted to get rid of Fitch, why doesn't he feed him the top of the welterweight division? Surely one of these highly touted prospects would defeat 'boring' Fitch? Dana White and Joe Silva will not do that because they know Fitch would defeat the best, but his demands for another title shot would gain traction.



It is disgraceful that Fitch has not gotten another title shot. If Dana does not feel Fitch has earned it yet, then pit a top challenger with Fitch to test his worthiness. But no. Fitch is being sidelined, mostly due to the mindless, whining fans who see MMA as only KO's and to hell with skill, technique, toughness and endurance.

It's really personal choice. If a team scores one field goal and uses their defense to go three and out for the whole game it may bore some people more than a shoot out between quarter backs.



Unfortunately MMA is not a true sport with a union, separate organizations and a tournament and ranking system.



MMA is an event put on by match makers and basically one major league being fed by minors. I have a feeling fitch would still not be champ if it were a more fair athletic system. In fact I hope he fights diaz, condit, Ellenberger, or any other top 10 fighter. The only one recently is Penn who he fought to a draw, and Diaz dismantled.



Main problem here is MMA is an event not a unified sport with a pro league. Until it is one we are stuck with what ever the ufc decides makes the most money.



The worst part is they would make more money if they created a format that was like other professional sports. Something boxing never did.

No-one wants to see fitch get in the ring with GSP again.The last fight was good, but I just don't see him as a threat to the WW title, no matter who has the belt. A gatekeeper at most.
