Joe Rogan: Junior dos Santos vs. Mark Hunt is a great fight to make

UFC color commentator Joe Rogan made a forum post on The Underground, discussing the possible Cinderella story of Mark Hunt replacing Alistair Overeem for a title shot against Junior dos Santos. Rogan agreed that stylistically Hunt could be the most exciting match-up for JDS, if not at UFC 146, then sometime "down the road":

There are some wise people on this board, and I support this movement.

Style wise that might be the most exciting match up. Either way, even if Hunt doesn't replace the reem I would still love to see this matchup down the road, especially considering how good Hunt looked against Kongo.

Has anyone started a twitter bomb campaign for this?

Well, apparently Joe Rogan hasn't of #RallyForMarkHunt camaign on Twitter. It's not trending, but it looks like MMA fans and media alike agree that the Super Samoan is the one who should fight Junior dos Santos, if Alistair Overeem fails to impress/convince/intimidate the Nevada State Athletic Commission on April 24th.

I'd definitely watch that fight. I'd take JDS via decision but you never know.

That's interesting because obviously Hunt has an incredible chin but he doesn't have the greatest cardio, I wonder if he could go the 5.

His cardio didn't look good against Rothwell but that was at altitude and there was a lot of grappling involved - I would expect Hunt's cardio to be affected a lot more by grappling than cardio.

So basically you guys want the UFC to just start giving people title fights because they throw bombs and it SEEMS like it would be an exciting fight?? not the ones who actually put in hard work and work their way up to the title shot??

Cain just lost to dos santos.

The Mir fight is lopsided in my opinion, because of the styles (Mir's very slim chance to get a takedown and less than stellar chin).

So who is left, really? Mark Hunt. He might not be the most well rounded fighter there is, but stylistically this might be the most interesting matchup for dos santos in the entire division with Testostereem finally being busted.

Do it dana, be crazy for once. We all want to see it.

It's hard to argue with Hunt although I still like the unpopular Mir idea. I still always enjoy grappler vs striker match ups.

JDS vs. Mir is a fun style match-up (not for Frank) but as well as that it is by far the most fairest.

According to Dana though Mir seemingly won't be replacing him.

fedor if we are just going to throw names out there. The only person who deserves a shot right now is frank mir. but if he is not going to get it give it to fedor just for revenue purposes. i mean he looked good vs werdum and henderson he went for the finish and got caught. i mean it was the first time i saw henderson get rocked.

Honestly I think mark hunt and dos santos are worlds apart in striking, I think junior would tko him in the first round

You clearly do not know what you are talking about. If they are worlds apart (IMO they aren't) then it's because Hunt has the advantage.

Hunt is a K-1 WGP champion (best possible accomplishment for a striker) and a renowned kickboxer. JDS is a brilliant boxer but I don't think he is on the level of Hunt or Overeem in striking.

That's not to say JDS wouldn't win, JDS can KO anyone alive using those small gloves and he is much more well rounded.

His technique with his striking is no where near close to juniors, he's flat footed and just sits on his punches to much I think, dos santos is much quicker and crisper with his striking, he can get in and out with quick jabs, and I never said mark hunt wasn't a good striker, just not against dos santos

Being flat footed is a benefit if you are a top striker as you deliver more power, that's why Hunt is so devastating.

When you your striking level is as high as Hunt's and you can; sit in the pocket and evade your opponent's strikes, know how range works and how to use it, use good defensive techniques and can do stuff like Hunt did to Kongo while defending then you don't need to be up on your toes and you have extra power.

Only problem being flat footed is that you will find it harder to get out of the way of a TD but when talking about pure striking being flat footed is an advantage.

Carwin's faster than Hunt, concentrates exclusively on his punching for standup, and he still couldn't tag JDS solidly. What exactly are you predicting? That Hunt will KO JDS via headkick? Hunt's not exactly known for his kicks, knees, or elbows, which against JDS just turns him into an inferior boxer with an inferior ground game.

Carwin maybe be a better athlete but I would definitely say Hunt has faster hands.

It's not all about the best physical attributes it's about knowing how to use them and Hunt definitely knows how to box better than Carwin. Carwin not being able to tag JDS doesn't matter.

Chuck Liddell KO'd Overeem while the much faster Vitor Belfort couldn't do the same and lost to OVereem twice. Both Belfort and LIddell focus mainly on hands for striking so in that case your logic didn't hold up/

What are you talking about? Belfort's chin is solid, the ref has only stepped in due to G&P twice by a bigger Randy Couture and only KO'd once by Anderson Silva, not something irregular.

I think this would be a great way to see JDS' ground game. He would maybe have a very slight advantage over Hunt standing...just due to being more athletic and generally in better shape - Hunt's standup technique, timing and accuracy are as good as anybody's. However, if JDS' ground game is as good as his camp claims it is, he would have a HUGE advantage over Hunt there, and it would be the smart game plan to take the fight there.

I agree. In addition, Hunt has a weak submission defense.I think a guy named Mousasi submitted him a couple off years ago; also noting that Mousasi is a LHW.

I'd just rather see someone who had been in the mix recently get the next shot at the belt.

I like Hunt, I enjoy watching him, and I'd enjoy watching him fight JDS. That said, are ya'll nuckin futs?!?! It's not about what fight we want to see, or what stylistic match-up we find most interesting... This is a title shot - it's about who's next in line and who deserves it. Sorry, but Mir is #3 and he deserves it if Overeem gets pulled.

Thats my thought too, but Dana said it wont be Mir, not sure why. Now I guess they'll bank on Reem slippin through...doubt that will happen and they better have a plan B for sure.

Mir doesnt deserve it any more than Cain. Cain has one loss in his career to JDS off a lucky shot to the ear. Mir has worked his way back up for sure but he needs to beat Cain now to get a title shot. JDS needs to sit and wait for the winner and hype up a real title fight.

JDS gets the winner, Werdum gets the Loser.

Yes, JDS vs Hunt would be a good match up until JDS took him down and smashed his face off then submitted him. I don't understand how someone like Mark Hunt can even be talked about as a Heavyweight contender let alone a title contender. I like Mark Hunt a lot but come on people. This would be the most ridiculous title shot ever. No disrespect but Hunt has a long long way to go. Beating Kongo is not enough. Especially when you have all those other real contenders who've been killing themselves for like 5 years straight. It just sounds stupid.

I couldn't agree more timbo. Not saying anything against Hunt's potential, but he's just not there yet. The only other fight makes sense in that division right now is Mir vs. JDS. I am not the biggest Mir fan, but he has earned it.

I think it would be a good fight for sure but I dont believe hunt had earned a title shot yet. They gave lesnar one that quick to though so whatever happens ill watch but I think the best bet is to sit JDS and let him fight the winner of Cain vs Mir. Cain had the big layover with the ring rust, make it fair give it to JDS too.

Hell ya its a great fight. 2 heavy strikers is the best match up around. I only wish there was more of them. Why are people crying over Mir getting bypassed. I Mean the guy is fighting pretty soon to get a shot for the belt so its not like theyre not giving him his chance. Give us a great show in the mean time.

Guest I'm not so sure about him deserving a title shot. Don't get me wrong i like Hunt and he's exciting to watch.......when he's on his feet that is, and even though he is very difficult to take down, when he does get taken down he's like a fish out of water. His submission defence is also lacking, as his record shows, i mean, the guy is 8 - 7 man. Fair enough he's won 3 fights on the bounce, but hardly against top HW's in Tuchscherer, Rothwell and Kongo.

That said though i can see why people think this would make an exciting fight. They both like to stand and strike, they both hit hard with KO power and they both come to fight. In all honesty though i think JDS would completely out class Hunt on the feet, Hunt hits hard yes but he's nowhere near as fast as JDS and JDS is a lot more diverse with his strikes and he also has much better movement. Hunts best chance would be to hope for a mistake from JDS, to catch him over extending or something but personally i think that's a long shot.

Would be interesting to watch and i've nothing against Hunt but on the feet, which is where i think this fight takes place, i think JDS is just on another level entirely. If there's one thing i've learnt watching MMA all these years though it's that anything can happen on the night and even the best get caught occasionally. If this fight does happen though, 9 out of 10 times JDS takes it imo..........
