James Toney and Ken Shamrock almost come to blows at pre-fight Press Conference

James Toney and Ken Shemrock officially began the pre-fight hype up for their bout, which will take place on September 23rd in El Paso, Texas.  The pair exchange some harsh words during the official pre-fight "meet and greet", with Toney calling Shamrock "a has been" and Shamrock promising to "bloody up" Toney, before camps from both sides stepped in to prevent mayhem.

The press conference took place at IFC (International Fight Center) Gym in Van Nuys, California.

Also, Pro MMA Now (via FightOpinion.com) reports that Toney and Shamrock will fight under "special" rules:

The bout will take place Sept. 23 in El Paso, Texas, and be fought under modified MMA rules in which a 30-second ground rule will be implemented mandating the referee stand both fighters up should they remain on the ground more than 30 seconds. (8 rounds of 3 mins each with the ‘30 second shot clock’ ground rule.)

These fights are needed. They sell. It is all about money. Let alone this is a perfect match up for JT. Shamrock reminds me of the movie "The Wrestler." It is sad to see him do this to his legacy.

What is up with the stupid "special rules". i'm guessing Toney asked for it in the contract so he would more of a chance

Can you blame him though? :-D A lot of fighters in pre-fighthype say they plan to stand and bang...till they step in the cage and get hit(or feel some air from the other guy swinging) ;-) .. That's when their Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling roots start to kick in. I'll watch that fight. I won't even pretend.

:-D .. Toney should have made it a 12 second rule though. 30 seconds still puts him in a bad position in my opinion.

It would only take a few seconds for Shamrock to submit Toney. The question is, does anyone care?

This might be the biggest freak show of all time.

what i love the most, is that despite his history with WWF, Ken Shamrock is still one of the worst trash talkers of all time

MMA will never be taken as seriously as it should because of crap like this. I am sick to my stomach with all these over the hill fighters still trying to make money off the back of MMA. As bad as this sounds, and even if this goes against the business model of hyping fights and selling tickets, I wish the UFC started an iniciative to ban all these fake competitions and stop freak shows. Sure we want to see them out of curiosity, but do we need them in MMA? Toney VS Couture was silly and I hope we never see anything like this in the top leagues. So again my thought is BAN ALL THESE MOTHER****ERS from ever fighting again.

WTF has this sport come to. Okay, this is from Middleeasy.com rumour mill but STILL :

Another rumor is that James Toney and Ken Shamrock have agreed to 'let' Toney win by submitting Shamrock with a knee bar.

    BAD FOR THE SPORT.

All Shamrock really needs is 30seconds to either break his arm or pound his stupid head into the canvus. Even if Toney survived the first 30 seconds he would be real gassed

Wow, modified rules of "MMA" for two dudes who should have been out of the fight game a decade ago. Once again, Texas proves itself to be a giant festering wart of inconsistency and disrespect on the face of a sport that needs all the consistency and regulation it can get.

God I hope the UFC doesn't ever do an event in Texas, as the promotion that prides itself on pushing the validity of this sport. Not till they get their shit together and start following the Unified Rules 100% of the time and honouring the suspensions of other athletic commissions should there be any more big-ticket MMA events in the state. In the last year, Margarita (boxing) and Josh Barnett have both been lisenced to fight in Texas in spite of not being allowed to anywhere else in North America. This bullsh*t needs to stop, the UFC needs to be at the forefront.

And the UFC ultranationalists had the nerve to label Strikeforce... 'Strikefarce'.

Behold the glory of the unnecessary and moronic freakshow fights. What's next? Perhaps Van Damme vs. Anderson Silva or Mike Goldberg vs. Bruce Buffer?

30 second ground limit and 3min rounds? this is all in Toney's favor. but no matter, Ken won't need 30 seconds to submit him. Toney was 10 seconds from being armbarred in that conference if they didn't stop them.
