James Toney: Boxing is a tougher sport

James Toney, who recently signed to the UFC keeps on talking about how boxing is better than MMA and how he’s is going to make a successful transition from boxing to MMA. In a recent interview Toney said not only is boxing tougher but MMA fighters kick like girls.

"If they think I'm going to go in there and get choked out or lay down and get my arm barred and all that, they got another thing coming to 'em, you know what I'm saying? Like I said, yeah, you're right; MMA is not like boxing because boxing is tougher, you know what I'm saying? I look at it like this, if a guy get in there and try to take me to the ground, he might see his head go into orbit. The head is going into orbit, for real.

These guys in MMA, they good wrestlers and good grapplers and good kickers, like girls, but, you know, when it comes to throwing them blows, they ain't got a chance in hell, you know what I'm saying? Then they say I don't got a chance if I go to the floor.”

Toney still believes that he is too strong to get taken down or submitted and if anyone comes close to taking him down they will get knocked out before they can touch him but now he taking his trashing talking even further as he is now starting to criticize the kicking power of a MMA fighter and the overall toughness of this sport.

When asked about his possible future opponent, Randy Couture, Toney said that he respects Couture but he is still going to get knocked out.

"Randy Couture, he respects my game like I respect his game. He's the best at what he do in his sport; I'm the best at what I do in my sport. We gonna see who has the better style and everybody know it's James Toney. If he tries to throw blow for blow with me, he definitely gonna get knocked out. That's a given, you know what I'm saying? If he tries to take me to the ground, it ain't going to be easy, you know what I'm saying? He's still gonna get knocked out. Either way, it's a lose-lose situation for him."

James Toney is rumored to make his UFC debut at either UFC 115 or 116.

I think toney is just talkin so much so he gets media attention its the oldest trick in the book. I also think Randy will beat him to be honest. Its Toney's MMA debut and randy is a hall of famer who has wrestled and fought all his life.

How can he say Boxing is tougher when he hasnt fought in MMA you cant compare something if you have no experience in the other field. I wanted to see Toney have some success but he is digging his own grave here do you give him someone with vicious striking and leg kick to show him just how hard a girl can kick, or do you give him a grappler take him down in like a milli second and beat the shit out off him, then make him tap. Either way has two path he dosent want to go down, and he wont shut up about it so you know he's going down one of them. Also Toney i got news for you grappling technique trumps power your ass will be take down and you will be sweating like a blind gay guy lost in a hot dog factory.

    randy shouldnt fight toney!

toney is a heavyhanded guy , couture not!

couture has the wrestling thing that everyone thinks is advantage

but couture is greco-roman wrestling! he must clinch first !

and to do that he must come close to toney! and he could get hit!

and randy dosent have the best chin now with his age!

    he has been ko .

what im trying to say is he should fight a youngers fighter!

a really good diverse striker! like Dos Santos!

a guy who can also kick and knee! not just punchs!

or a good wrestler! who take toney down with doble legs !

    Cain Velazquez! style!

because if toney get a lucky punch and KO a legend in MMA! like randy

that would hurt a lot the sport of MMA!

and his credibility! as a better and improve sport!

in my opinion Dos Santos being taller younger and faster would own toney round 1!

Boxing is more sport than combat. The opposite is true for MMA. Boxing alone will only get you by in a boxing ring. Not the street and not MMA.

MMA is not combat either going for a knockout or submission is not combat. Dont get me wrong I am a huge mma fan but dont mistake it for hand to hand combat..Ive done both mma and served in the marine corps, mma is also a sport

Obviously MMA has rules so it is a sport. I didnt say it wasnt. Only that is much closer to real combat than boxing. I bet youve done well in your MMA experience. Ive served and fought also. Except my tour was in Maximum security prison. Dont tell me whats hand to hand. See a lot of action in the core?

"99%" of all real fights end up on the ground. Boxers train and fight under a lot of rules. Nobody follows rules on the street. Or stands right in front of you. All due respect to the SPORT of boxing. For self defense ill stick with the martial arts.

I agree that boxing is 'tougher' than mma in some regards, just look at the brain damage studies that have been done on boxers while you can win an mma fight without hitting the other guy in the head once.

I'm hoping Toney is just trying to hype this up. We all know boxing is a bit of an entertainment spectacle before they even set foot in the ring.

I had no idea he was fighting Randy for his 1st MMA fight. If Randy gets a hold of him HE IS GOING DOWN. That's a given.

Randy's chin will not take one of Toneys punches so as long as he can stay away from his hands he'll be ok. That might not be too tough for a veteran of the sport.

Like I suspected before. I reckon Dana wants Toney shut up & his ass handed to him on the ground. There probably isn't a better wrestler along with ground & pound ability in UFC in that weight division than Randy.

I predict a 1st round stoppage & cutting equipment called in to remove Randys elbows from Toney's mouth!

Toney has pissed me off now with his mouth & Randy needs to put MMA back on the top of the combat sports map!

well its obvious that this is just toney's idea of helping promote a MMA fight with him in it. i doubt toney isn't training up his wrestling and kickboxing skills, tho i doubt they will be on par with who ever he ends up fighting.

i honestly do not think that randy is a bad match up for toney. randy really hasn't been a takedown type of wrestler and will likely try to use his greco stand up controll and isn't really a "kickboxing" type striker as much as a "boxing" type striker, essentially randy is the MMA equivalent to a "in fighter". toney has allways been a counter striker/in fighter, randy's close in clinch fighting will actually put toney into one of his comfortable striking ranges, tho he will likely never have worked a clinch the class of Coutures.

toney in reality actually has some good match ups in the LHW division, lots of the UFC LHW's don't really focus on grappling (tho they have efficent enough grappling to defend at minimum) and i could see lots of them trying to stand with toney.

similar to Rashad standing with Machida, Machida is in his own right a world champion class striker, yet Rashad still tried to make a stand up fight out of it without even attempting to take Machida down. i could see lots of LHW's tring to do the same with toney just to be able to say "i KO'ed a boxing champion"

toney i think will do ok, he will probally win and lose some fights. his style of boxing isn't really bad for MMA counter striking/in fighting. if you have ever seen him box he likes to stay way outside and wait to counter, but is also one of the most acurate in fighters ever in boxing his body shot's are crushing blows. not to mention he essentially is a counter instriker using it to hurt a opponet who closes the distance on him so he can get back out of striking range.

i think toney just knows how to get a fight some press, good or bad either way it sells PPV's and tickets.

i really don't see UFC putting Toney and Kimbo together so soon, as Kimbo is essentially a lesser version of what Toney promises to be, a highly skilled boxer. they will probally give kimbo another journyman type opponet and then maybe if he wins a fight with toney "whos the baddest man from the streets" type of blacksplotation fight name.

Boxing is tougher in some ways!! try surprising your opponent with the game plan - er I'm gonna try and punch him - he'll never expect that! Tough. Try filling an arena with a dying sport and only the main event preceeded by a load of rubbish fights - tough! Try being knocked out and allowed to stagger back to you feet then getting knocked out all over again -thats tough. Try having someone punch you with a big pillow inside his glove for 12 rounds - brain damage is tough.

Yeah it is tougher considering that fighters often suffer much more brain damage and unfortunately are killed a lot more often. TheGuvnor Lenny McLean himself Britain's most formidable bare knucke fighter back in the day campaigned to have gloves banned because of the accumulative brain damage problem. But the MMA fighters will beat boxers most of the time in no rules fights so in that respect MMA is tougher. Sick of this. Let's just get Toney on the next card and have done with this shennanigans!

I can't keep my mouth shut about this. Saying boxing is tougher is ridiculous. While it's not as safe as MMA it sure as **** isn't as hard. It's easier to train in one martial art rather than several. The conditioning involved for MMA is insane, you're using your whole body as a weapon rather than your fists and torque. This guy speaks very uneducated, I question how he will function training in Jiu-Jitsu
