Jake Shields would love a chance to fight Anderson Silva

5656555179 e80cc151faFormer Strikeforce Middleweight champion Jake Shields was on quite a roll when he joined the UFC in October of last year, entering the promotion on a winning streak of 15 fights, while going 25-4-1 over his career.

In his first UFC bout, contested at the Welterweight limit, Shields defeated Martin Kampmann via split decision. That win earned him a shot at UFC Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. St. Pierre defeated Shields by unanimous decision, but during the course of the bout Shields did do something that had not been accomplished for some time, he actually won a round against the champion.  In his next fight, against Jake Ellenberger, Shields would be TKO’d in a mere 53 seconds.

Shields’ next fight will be against Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 144. That fight, to be held on February 26, will be contested at the Welterweight limit. However, that upcoming fight has not stopped Shields from looking ahead a bit to a possible fight with UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva, “That’s a fight I’ve wanted for a long time. Anderson’s a phenomenal fighter, one of the best of all time, but I just think stylistically the guys that match up best against him are wrestlers with good jiu-jitsu. Chael did great with him until he got caught in a triangle right at the end. His worst matchup’s against good wrestlers and jiu-jitsu, and it’s just he’s a great matchup. Obviously it wouldn’t be an easy fight because I think he has the best standup in the sport, but that’s a fight I would love an opportunity to do.” – for more see MMAFightCorner.com
