Top Welterweight contender Jake Shields, who will meet Jake Ellenberger at UFC: Battle on the Bayou, discusses the recent developments surrounding his teammate, Nick Diaz, as well as his desire to challenge Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.

Jake Shields

"I really wanted to see that fight, as most people. I think everyone was excited to see Nick (Diaz) vs. GSP. Condit and St. Pierre is a good fight too, but obviously most people would probably agree that its not as good a fight...I think Dana is a smart guy and mostly fair. I don't know the details, but hopefully Nick learns from what he's done and moves forward and gets himself another title shot...I just heard that (Nick Diaz was fighting BJ Penn) two minutes ago and I am very happy about that. I was worried Nick would get dropped from the UFC after that. So, its good that he gets a chance to redeem himself and that's a great fight as well. It's a tough fight, but I think Nick sets too high of a pace for BJ. I think he'll overwhelm him and tire him down and beat BJ.

I think (Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami) was a great performance. Anderson Silva just picked him apart. It shows he's on a different level. He dropped him with a jab, it's not very often you see guys get dropped with jabs in MMA and that's a few times Anderson has dropped people with jabs now. His striking is just extremely impressive. I would love the opportunity (to fight Anderson Silva). I've wanted to fight him for years. Obviously, its a tough fight. To say Anderson Silva would be an easy fight would just be stupid. But, I want to fight him because he's one of the best pound for pound for sure and I think stylistically, the best guy to beat him is a good wrestler with good submissions. So, stylistically, it's a good fight for me."

I honestly think Shields have a great chance at beating Silva. If he can take Silva to the ground and have the same some what game plan against Dan henderson I can see it going like that.

@Bill I agree. I think that stylistically Shields has a better chance than most of beating AS. That said, I think AS does manage to keep it standing long enough to get a third or fourth round TKO. He doesn't need much opportunity when he brings his A game.

Not an natural interviewer for sure. Very staged questions. I am sure it's hard to ask those tough questions, but she has a job to do and I am sure that's a question you have to ask as a reporter.

BTW, I look great in the background - LOL..

Jake is too slow for the better competition in the UFC... I like how honest he is though...

You do know he has wins over Carlos Condit and Yushin Okami right?

Dont mention Yushin, for your own arguments sake. Jake is a submission or decision king, both of those were decision fights and he wouldn't beat Condit now.

He probably would. The only guy at WW who can beat him is GSP and he didn't do a very good job of it. The slow Shields kept pretty even on the feet with Georges. BTW Yushin Okami.

Jake needs to get pass Jake Ellenberger first before thinking about going up to fight AS. If the fight with AS does happen I don't see Jake doing anything to beat AS. Silva at this moment is unbeatable in my opinion I mean look at all the fighter he has gone up against sure some fights are not as dominating as the last two fights he had.

I have to agree with Nick being too well conditioned and tough for BJ. I'm sure BJ will hit him with some big shots, but Nick will outwork him, outland him, and probably stop him in the 3rd round. Questionable cardio vs. the best cardio in MMA.
