Jake Shields says he'll be "hunting for submissions from every angle" against Georges St. Pierre
Posted on April 17, 2011, 11:14 PM by Joey SantosusTop Welterweight contender Jake Shields, who will face division Champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 129 in Toronto, discusses his opponent, as well as how he envisions the fight playing out. Shields feels that he and St. Pierre are equally talented wrestlers, but predicts it will be his superior submission abilities that earn him the victory.
Unbeaten in more than six years, Shields will challenge the reigning 170-pound champ, "GSP", in the headlining bout of the stacked UFC 129 fight card. The event is set to take place on April 30th in front of a record breaking audience in the sold-out Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and will also feature the promotional debut of Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo, as he puts his belt on the line against Mark Hominick in the co-main event.

Tapping GSP out is like trying to find a needle in a haysack. GSP has been submitted by hughes but ever since that lost its been impossible to submit him.
(In the beginning of the video) Those were some of the best punches I have ever seen Jake throw. And Jake is a likable guy, but GSP is going to have his way with him. I respect Jake though, but if he pulls off the sub and wins the title I will be very impressed with Jake, guy would be a magician if that happened
You can make GSP tap by pounding his face ala Matt Serra.
This coming from a guy who had Mayhems back MULTIPLE times and couldnt sub him i see this fight by of 2 ways GSP by TKO or GSP by molestment...
Jake Shields via sub - round 3
I'll take your money UG haha.
Moneyline odds just might make it worthwhile to throw a hundred bucks on shields. I actually work in a sportsbook in Las Vegas and if the odds keep going that way, I just might drop some cash on Shields.
GSP via tko - round 3
LOL I would ONLY bet my money on Anderson Silva and Jon Jones, but I believe that Jake Shields will beat GSP.
How did I get so many SHARPS? lol
It wouldn't shock me if you won that bet. I think GSP will get a decision W but if he gets subed I won't raise an eyebrow. I think a lot of people on this site are going to be shocked when they see just how good Jake really is.
Get out of here ICP!!! Haha nah just playin. I can't believe sooo many people around here (that I actually like or take seriously) are giving Jake that much of a chance. As far as record and who Jake has beaten, yes I can see it. But when I watch both of their fights, I just can't see Jake getting that W.
I know GSP cross trains in everything, key in this fight will be his boxing and distance. GSP is also good on the ground and could take it there and test himself....but whens the last time GSP has taken risks playing into his opponents strengths?
He did keep it standing with Kos even though most thought that josh's best chance was to knock GSP out.... but I see your point and I would not roll with Jake simply because he is too slow on the feet.
pffft good luck Jake. Gotta tire him out, hurt him, get him to the ground and keep him there first.
have you seen jake's last fight?? I know he had a heavy weight cut, but the endurance was terrible. I think gsp is going to try tire jake out
He's scared......
Yeah... and GSP will be hunting for Orbital Bone fractures, takedowns, Superman punches, spinning back kicks... etc... so....
" i can work off my back" Gsp will control him on the ground and he'll have no chance at trying subs. The ultra flexible JJ master like penn coudnt do it in the first round, Shields might be one of the best at grappling but i dont see him submitting gsp.
Shields should try to gsp gsp, take him down, control and work, or more like lay and pray like he did against hendo, thats's his only chance to win.
That wasn't LnP when Shields fought Hendo...
I think Shields will take GSP down in the first round, mount him, and make him tap to an unending barrage of pillow punches.
i think some of you are very delusional and should go back to whatever wwe forum you came from
it's anyone's fight...sheilds is being underestimated by eveyone except gsp
NEVER LET YOUR GUARD DOWN
Just marking this so I can come back after GSP's easiest victory yet.
lol good one Japanegro, my mark ins for jones were useful lol
i am a fan of both guys,i was mearly pointing out that alot of people are counting sheilds out...he is very, very skilled and mr.st pierre knows this
i think ufc arent mega promoting this fight (theyre promoting it but not stupidly massivly like they should) because they want to see if sheilds can play a massive upset and actually win, sheilds has a more long-term fight plan to promote than george...george has dominated all from his division and going up isnt really on the cards for him anytime soon whereas if shields wins, look at the wealth of fighters he has to test his mettle...like i said,i am a long-term fan of both st pierre and sheilds and knowing what i do,NOTHING is predictable...hands up who thought cawin had lesnar, sonnen had silva...look what happened
good luck to both fighters and i hope george wins as he is an awesome personallity for the sport and an excellent, curtious champion
excellent card as well
Shields isn't subbing anyone.
people arnt being delusional. i for one am just sick of danas hype, saying that this is his toughest fight and sheilds could easily win, he said all the same sh*t about his last few opponents, and he couldnt of been more wrong. besides the winning streak shields is no more worthy than kos or alves (maybe more worthy than hardy).
i would similarly reply to you as my reply above
sheilds has had a bit of time off (ring rust) since strikeforce to ufc so hes still finding his groove and this is also applicable to pierre as he doesnt/cant fight as often to keep his momentum up as hes defeated everyone so there are less opponants worthy of a title fight.
i know just how good GSP is but i think a lot of people are really underestimating Shields chances in this fight, the guy has beaten absolutely everybody put in front of him and 6 years unbeaten is not easily accomplished in this sport as everyone knows. I think GSP will win this fight but not as easily as most seem to think, i just think Shields isn't getting the respect he deserves and i for one wont be suprised if he gets a tapout victory, especially if it hits the matt......
As much as I like GSP, I think Shield will take this one. GSP does not go for a kill and it Shield does, GSP would quit as he likes not to get injured.
If sheilds had subbed Hendo, Miller, or Kampmann I would more likely to believe him.
Fact is that he himself was saved by the bell with Miller and Kampmann had him in worse positions then he had Kampmann.
He has good top control but I can't see him ending this fight.
i don't think he's gonna have time to "hunt" for sub, when is gonna get his face jabbed for 5rds.
people are so stupid, look at jakes last fight, jake has no stand up,,blah bl;ah BLAH! he is better than anybody gsp has faced period...jon fitch was handled easily by jake at the adcc championships in submission wrestling...in the same tourny gsp was whipped by the guy gsp destroyed in just a few moments in the finals...not if but when it goes to the ground regardless of w2ho takes who down jake will have his way with goerge...and no jake did not submit miller but he dominated him and survived a rear-naked choke when anybody else would have tapped...nuff said jake by dec or dec.
jake by sub..
You have a problem with repetition.
However, you do make a valid argument. The problem (in my opinion) is that GSP six years ago was an entirely different fighter, whereas Jake has evolved in some ways, but to a FAR lesser degree. He is an extremely skilled specialist... not quite one-dimensional, but relatively close. Although I don't believe that GSP will be able to submit Shields, he truly is a master strategist - a specialist at fighting specialists; therefore, given his incredible athleticism - his speed, power and endurance - I find it very unlikely that he will play into Jake's hands, just as I find it equally unlikely that Jake will be able to dictate the pace (or, subsequently, the position) of the fight.
No one is invincible, and Jake Shields does possess the tools to beat anyone; however, in my opinion, 9 times out of 10 GSP will emerge victorious.
Realistically...GSP via unanimous decision...I don't see Jake submitting GSP if he can't submit Kampmann. And I don't see GSP knocking Jake out if Dan Henderson couldn't. GSP will keep him away from him with his karate techniques, cause some damage and win via points.
Who is the physically stronger of the two? Strength is gonna play a huge factor in this fight and I'd love to see which fighter has been hitting the weights harder.
