True but he is amazing on the ground and has nearly unstoppable take downs. They aren't as explosive as GSP's but they are equally effective. It is good to see him going to the right places to get help with his weak points. He is very slow but I think that is because he isn't loose. If he could work on that his striking would be much better. It is too bad his next opponent is GSP because Freddie Roach could do wonders for him.
Yea he's not exactly a standup wizard, but the amazing thing is that he overcomes such amazing deficiencies to beat people in multiple weight classes that you think he should have NO chance of beating. And it seems as though he's working on changing that weakness too
...he's too stiff and he has no confidence. He needs to learn how to simply move; there's not rhythm or meter, to him.
Maybe instead of Freddie Roach, he should start taking dance classes. And for those that might laugh at that, Vitor Belfort recently said in an online video post, that one of the things he was doing to prepare for Anderson, was dancing. Anderson himself, is a tremendous dancer and it shows in the ring; Bruce Lee, for that matter, was also a (very good) dancer. My guess would be, that if we ever saw video of Shields on a dance floor that he'd be just as stiff, as he is in the ring.
The two skills are very similar. In both instances you have a partner.
I couldn't agree more about the dancing. I believe Muhamed Ali was a skilled dancer as well. It is cool that you bring that up. As to being too stiff, that is precisely what I meant by "not loose".
It was the "butterfly" in his "bee". It is that elasticity, which allows for the "snap"; snap will kill you; it's kinetic power; the ability to shift your bodies weight dynamically and in fluid motion. It is quite literally the very definition of dancing. The only difference between the two art forms, is that the one is not trying to hit you, where the other is; Capuaria, bridges the gap between the two (at least in South America); and Anderson Silva would be proficient in Capuaria, as an example.
To be more on point - I'm shocked that more fighters aren't telling you that they are into pilates and ballet; both would be relevant, in terms of balance and core strength, to fighting.
guys cmon now, we all start off striking at some stage. even if you are a pro fighter for 11 years (like shields) everyone starts out as a beginner in striking. give him a break.
hahahahahahha ****face jake shields!!! my girlfriend kicks harder then him!!! you are a shame for the sport **** you!!! look at this... i m pretty sure that i can give this guy an asswhoppin in a -K1- match!!! :-D
i hate this guy!!! DW is pumpin him up and poor kampman got robbed!!! **** you shields!!
ok thats true.. you are right! but his fights are booring as hell!!
and he didnt deserve to fight for the belt in the UFC!!
whats about the others who deserve a title shot at 170??
"Jake Shields 1 0 1 lay n pray" the art of layin on top of your opponent! out now on DVD ;-) he is always fighting to not loose and thats it!! by the way royce always finished fights..;-)
The reason Shields got a title shot is because he has beaten Kampmann, Hendo, Miller, Daley, Condit, Okami, Pyle, Sakurai and is the former SF, Elite XC, Shooto and Rumble in the Rocks Champ and he is a two division champion and he has finished 7 of his last 10 fights
yeah... and a few month ago you all sayed the same about the unbeatable lesnaaar!!! you dont know shit!!! how old are you 16 - 17??
the miller fight was the same thing as the hando fight and the kampman fight!!! boooring as hell.. he s a bitch!! hate me now.. please cause i dont give a shit!!! hahahaha
damn he sucks at striking. i do not understand how the hell he got a title shot. even if he did squeak out the win against martin kampann, he did it in awful fashion. he had trouble taking him down and once he did, kampmann was able to hang with him in the grappling department. if he had that much trouble with kampmann (no offense, hes a great fighter) he's going to get demolishedddd by GSP. he's not gonna be able to take him down and then hell only have his awful muay thai skills to fall back on... good luck jake, youre gonna need it.
You might be surprised. He hadn't cut wt. in three years. I think he will look much better when he fights GSP (or Kos LOL). I am not saying he will win, but he won't get demolished.
you bring up a good point, but if people like matt hughes and kos have trouble taking GSP down, then i dont see how jake can; which, in my opinion, is his only way of winning. hes not that physically big and not that strong. im hoping GSP will stand and strike with him and TKO him. but of course we still need to wait for the kos GSP fight resulsts too.... lol.
Jake has better take downs than either Hughes or Kos. The only guy I can think of that might have higher take down accuracy is GSP. He is also a very big WW at this point and much stronger than he looks. I actually think that GSP will try to keep the fight standing. He is going to have a hard time doing so but I think that in the end you will get your wish; GSP via TKO in the third or fourth round.
you know who would be the worst matchup for shields at 170......Bj Penn. if he can get threw Bj Penn which i highly doubt then i think he deserves a title shot
I agree. BJ in good shape has unbelievable take down defense. That said GSP took him down at will and Shields take downs aren't far behind. It would definitely be an interesting match up. I would be very interested in seeing who is better on the ground.
shields is a fantastic grappler, and i'd say he's a better wrestler than koscheck too. the guy is on something like a 14 fight win streak so if all he's using is his wrestling and jiu jitsu then he's obviously pretty damn good at it. at least he's making the effort to improve on his weaknesses and become a more rounded fighter, like gsp did!

daaaaym Jake Shields is horrible in the stand up department...im surprised he even last this long in mma

@ Wing Chun AKA Wing Tzun - I'm sure everyone's aware of Anderson Silva's dancing credentials.... he has a very good Cha-Cha ; )
Hey, laugh but Cha-cha is exactly the type of dance Bruce Lee was into :D
I couldn't agree more about the dancing. I believe Muhamed Ali was a skilled dancer as well. It is cool that you bring that up. As to being too stiff, that is precisely what I meant by "not loose".

You would be correct.

Are you an expert?

Kampman lost that fight himself, he had the chance to finish it and didn't, he shouldn't have left it for judges.
Also your K1 comment is stupid. He admits he is not a good striker, hence why he is working on his stand up aboard in this video.
Would you say Royce Gracie was shit and bad for the sport cause all he did was BJJ? You play to your strengths in a fight, it's common sense.
I don't understand how a picture of a girl you have never met can kick harder than jake shields?
ok thats true.. you are right! but his fights are booring as hell!!

No one ever said that Lesner got a title shot due to his credentials.
Wow you're comparing lesnars record to shields?Q!!??!
jake shields makes muy thai look bad.

Who would have ever thought shields could beat henderson for those exact same reasons...
I know he's working on his stand-up and I applaud him for it, but that / this is so bad.

I hate to bash him for trying but common no fluidity no speed no power=horrible striker
