Jake Shields edges Martin Kampmann via Split Decision

Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann gave Jake Shields one of the toughest tests of his career, forcing the former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion to go to distance. Shields started the fight with his usual gameplan, taking advantage of his exceptional grappling skills. But this was not an easy task.

Martin Kampmann proved he's no joke on the ground against Paulo Thiago, and he did the same against Jake Shields. The Dane fired back with good submission attempts and ground-and-pound work, making Shields to redouble his efforts in order to secure a victory.

Kampmann was clearly a better man in the third round, but was unable to finish the fight. Jake Shields secures a valuable victory, but his exhaustion in the later stages of the fight may raise eyebrows of some MMA critics. Fight against the gellow grinder Jon Fitch seems like a reasonable option, as a winner will be clearly a UFC Welterweight title shot-worthy.

What I got from this fight was...Martin wasn't really trying to win, but rather showing the UFC WW roster that Jake Shield's is vunerable. I'm sure Martin's in the back laughing and joking about how he wasn't dominated on the ground. Maybe not as good as a win, but Martin can sleep tonight.

@ jackthedrinker well out of his past like 10 fights hes had 3 decisions. Cant finish them all. He was passing guard all night. Although he didnt land many strikes, he did pass a lot. Poor performance from both fighters anyways. Kampmann mainly fought stupid though. He gave the decision to Jake Shields. It wasnt a controversial decision.....it was the right one

Martin can sleep tonight? I wouldnt be able to sleep if I had gotten robbed like that.,,

the whole scoring system is crap. The fact that somebody is on top just counts waaaaay too much in the UFC fights, especially when the guy on top does absolutely NO damage. UFC should be pissed that they spent a **** loed of cash on a guy like Shields, cos he's a broing athlete, not even a fighter, who just grapples to get on top of you without doing any damage, and then squeezes out wins. time and time again, who the **** wants to see that?

Kampmann did way more damage and had it gone two more rounds kampmann would've won, shields was DONE after that fight. What ****ing BS dude!

Rogan and Dana lost a lot of respect from a lot of people for saying kampmann did nothing. ****suckers!

Didnt realise Rogan and Dana said that, shoudl've gone to specsavers. I had Kampmann by a mile as all Shields done was get takedowns compared to Kampmanns punches kicks and submission attempts. The UFC judges are a complete joke and until Dana takes some action the UFC will be a joke.

How the **** are yall blaming Dana for the scoring system?? This where people who think Dana is the Devil step up and try to say something to prove me wrong, but it cant help this, Dana doesnt make the ranking system, the athletic commission does, the UFC isnt the only company that uses the scoring system ALL companies do, and you saying the UFC is a joke is retard im sure this coming from someone who thinks GSP or Anderson are P4P the Greatest fighters in the world well guess what they r in the UFC so your saying they r a joke STFU man stop blaming Dana he made the sport what it is today!

I men by giving a win for a shot at the title to somene who done nothing offensive other than hug a guy, when Kampmann clearly landed loads of knees punchesand numerous submission attempts makes a joke of the UFC in that they hav a contender (Shields) who in reality has no place in the ring with GSP. yes it makes a joke of the uFC and other organisations, same as bent or blind judges make boxing a joke when they fix things also. That doesn't mean every fighter is a joke, you seem to be taking things way out of context pal, so engage your grey matter before replying to my posts.

BTW Dana could order immediate rematches where there is good reason. he did with BJ - Edgar, and could use that as a way to address controversial decisions. I could beat Shields in a scrap and I'm nearly 40!!

Strange how he lasted the full 3 rounds against a bigger Dan Henderson and looked like crap against a visibly smaller Kampmann.

No he just needs to fight at 185, I don't think the UFC shouldve pressured him to go down to 170, if you look at him in the Henderson fight he was pretty much as big as him and was able to go the full five rounds hard. Almost wish he lost the fight and moved up to 185 instead of getting a title shot (if Dana still gives him that) which will just see GSP (or Kos) tear him apart.

Shields does not deserve a title shot after that performance. GSP would destroy shields if he came in to fight him like that..Dana needs to stop kissing his ass and put him against Fitch for #1 contender spot

GSP would win but I think Shields performance was good, ppl need to appreciate grappling more, there wasn't one time in that fight were Sheilds just lay'd on top of Martin, he was transitioning, getting side control, full mount and even his back, he deserved that win and maybe now that he has experienced the weight cut he wont b so tried when he fights for the title

The guy doesn't deserve a title shot guys!!!!!!!! How can Dana belittle SF and their roster then bring over one of their guys and give him a title shot after one win. It wouldn't make sense. It wasn't even impressive.

Very disappointing in a couple ways. First, in Shields for being so out of shape. Man, if that fool expects to have a shot in hell against GSP he'd better get into better shape next time around. What chance would he have?? Oh man, it's laughable to think about!

Second, very disappointing to see Kampmann not throw the **** down. What was he waiting for?? Why did he try to sub one of the best BJJ guys in MMA? Stand the hell up and knock his ass out, Shields could barely stand up, you think he could have stood toe-to-toe with Martin in the last two minutes of the round? Terrible.

Real bad cut. It wasn't the best fight but you have to give Jake credit for fighting through that kind of exhaustion to win. Which ever judge gave Kampman the fight was retarded. Jake won every round.

well wrestling and Bjj are part of MMA, its the other persons fault for letting his opponent dominate them on the ground, and I wouldn't really call Shields ground game boring, if anything the fight was most exciting on the ground when Shields was transitioning from half guard to side control to full mount, he kept busy the whole time on the ground, good performance I think

Count the strike attemps... bet its over 100 from Martin to jakes 15 weak ass hammer fists, as he transitioned. lol

Well in this case the other fighter didnt just allw Shields to control him. Watch the fight back and se who had the most submission attempts, Kampmann by a mile. Passin guard means nothing if you dont do anything with it. Kampmanndone more from his back than Shields done from mount positions. But it counts for nothing cos he was on his back. That is whats wrong.

The guy above who said Shields won all 3 rounds must be blind. Are u sh*tting me? Kampmann got robbed IMO. He definitely took rounds 2 and 3 and u could even say it was a 9-9 1st round. That is probably the most pathetic judging I have ever seen. It goes to show u what the UFC is trying to do with Jake Shields. How in the hell can u get beat on for an entire 2nd round and roll over and get on top of a guy for about 30 seconds and steal the round? Same goes for the 3rd round. Jake Shields was getting dominated the entire 3rd round until there was a minute and a half left, then he rolled over on top of Kampmann, bear hugged him, and threw punches so soft that Kampmann pretty much grabbed his fist and held onto it. My god, people need to get off of Jake Shields sack. I'm a huge fan of grappling in mma, but I like watching grappling when the person doing it actually tries to hit the other guy and tries to actually fight and not just try to hold on for dear life. That is the saddest excuse for a co-main event I have ever seen, and I really hope Shields gets that title shot, so GSP can beat him until he can't move. Just hopefully GSP can dominate him for 25 whole minutes if it comes close to lasting that long because if not and Shields gets top position for 2 out of 25 minutes, then we all know Shields will get the unanimous decision..

For the record, after the fight when Kampmann said, "He didn't even f*ckin do anything to me. Look at my face", and Joe Rogan made the comment "well, u didn't do anything to him either." made me wonder how far Rogan's head was up Shields' ass. Shields was bleeding out of his nose, he couldn't hardly walk around the octagon after the fight, and if he would have had to fight for 2 minutes longer, he probably would have been the 1st death in mma history. And why? Because Kampmann stuffed everything Shields had to throw at him which took him mentally out of his game, and by Kampmann out powering him and putting his weight on him for almost the entire fight, he physically drained Shields. How this decision went Shields' way is beyond me.

If this was a grappling match, Shields probably won 29-28, but it wasn't. It was a mma fight, and it SHOULD be impossible to win a mma fight when u land 5 solid punches and ur opponent lands about 50 and 30 more solid knees to the gut.

Thats exaclty the way I saw it too bro.

If these two guys were not in a judged 3 round fight but had to fight on till one of them actually won by K.O or death, theres no doubt Kampmann wouldve won. Shields, all he did was get 2 mounts and throw sissy ass punches like he allways does. How can he be proud of that type of fighting style if u can even call it that. Rogan sucks balls for crack too after tonight.

The fight I watched had kampmann landing lots of knees punches and submission attempts and Shields getting many takedowns and laying and praying and nothng else. Who wins - Shields. What is the ****in problem in getting decent referees? They had one for this fight who knew how to correctly score it, but one had Shields 30 - 27. He needs to be dropped immediately as he onlt scores takedowns and doesn't coun knees or punches or submission attempts.

kampmann yo were unlucky, but you should have kept it standing in the 3rd you had great chance to finish a tired opponent.

Shields, GSP is gonna own ya bitch lay and pray azz.

Shields showed me tonight that GSP will make pretty quick work of him (as will Koscheck if Koscheck wins in December). Shield's take downs were average at best. He's great once on the ground but against GSP and Koscheck he'd be lucky to get the fight to the mat. Standing up no doubt about it, Koscheck will knock him out and GSP will atleast out point him to a decision.

jake was doing absolutly nothing! martin hasnt a scratch on his face!!

i hate this type of wrestlers.. why the judges score the fights like this??

I don't think Shields' cardio is in question. He did take some heavy hits through the fight to tire him out. I also think that Kampmann got robbed of a victory but you know how the saying goes...Shields against Fitch will definitely be a must have fight! Imagine someone actually getting a finish in that match...

Shields should fight Fitch next. Fitch could neutralize BJJ with his wrestling, grow some balls and stand with Shields and win the fight. If Fitch could stop Shields with stand-up, or even go to the decision that title-shot could be there with some respect. IMO
