In an interview to MMADieHards.com, #1 contender for the UFC Welterweight title, Jake Shields, discussed his upcoming UFC 129 main event bout against the reigning Champ Georges St. Pierre, stating that he will look to keep on the pressure throughout the fight. The fight against GSP will be Shields' second inside the Octagon, after the former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion defeated Martin Kampmann via a Split Decision at UFC 121.

Jake Shields is currently 26-4-1 in his MMA career, enjoying a 15-fight winning streak. Ten of Jake Shields' victories come via Submission, and only three via a Knockout. Jake Shields was never defeated as EliteXC Welterweight and Strikeforce Middleweight Champion.

Georges St. Pierre is training with the best submission fighter the planet earth has ever seen in MMA History.

Roger Gracie is insanely better than Jake Shields in Jiu-Jitsu, he's submitted the best in the world within minutes and seconds, multiple times, like it's nothing.

I agree Jake Shields is a very good fighter, but when you pair, the training of Roger Gracie with the training of Freddie Roach... Jake Shields doesn't have a shot in hell. He has NO CLUE about the beating that GSP will put on him.

GSP will do whatever he wants to Jake Shields, while preventing absolutely anything Jake tries on him.

This will be a really ugly fight for Jake... I'm talking Koscheck times 10. GSP could win by TKO easily here. Hell he could submit Jake if the opportunity presented itself.

logically this make since, but I'm done doubting Shields. If anyone can bring the fight to GSP its Shields he has a swagger going on right now.

Shields has a pretty decent chance, hes more accomplished than kos or fitch in mma. fitch has done a lot but only in the welterweight division,

shields has beaten okami, hendo, condit, lawler, pyle ,daley, millers also a decent fighter, and a draw with misaki , (misaki is a great fighter who beat hendo)

yea on the ground hes beaten them, he hasnt fought a Amazing wrestler like GSP tho, unless u want to count Okami... i think hes either gonna get out struck all not or get TKO'd.

yeah but hendos a great wrestler too,

and also in a grappling contest (i think adcc i might be wrong)

gsp got armbarred by a guy called leo santos in like little over or less than a minute, but shields beat the guy relatively easily by submission also

and both fitch and kos are wrestlers,

but shields is both a wrestler and a phenomenal jujitsu fighter,

but he hits like a girl..

If you look at the Silva vs. Sonnen fight you must admit that a good BJJ-guy always has a chance to beat an overwhelming wrestler.

I meant it the other way round, like that Shields could still submit St. Pierre even if he get's wrestled down by him.

The loss to Leo Santos was so long ago that I don't see it as a measure of GSP's ground fighting ability at all.

yes gsp must have improved his bjj considerably

but in terms of sheer grappling credentials

shields probably beats any top welterweight out there

    but this aint grappling,

and gsp can mix things up well

but shields definitely has an edge on the ground

and his wrestlings always has been good and hes been working with sonnen so we ll see

plus hes very mentally tough and has heart, we can see that from the hendo fight..

i hope you don't think that is what he is going to do...he will fight him the same way he fought hendo..and not if but when shields puts gsp on his back it might be over for gsp....esp..if it is the same gsp that could not submit hardy...gsp is not a great wrestler.. the toughest was jon fitch in which bj penn who has no real wrestling took him down with ease.. he is a great fighter as a whole mma..but is not even close to hitting the level jake is on with wrestling of bjj....the question is who has better bjj , bj penn or shields...gsp please keep it standing it will be an easy fight for you that way...

I smell great upset. Shields is very underrated,.and unappreciated as a

great MMA fighter. GSP,is going to get subbed by Gracie protege.

Just keep it standing is the key to win for gsp, i dont think gsp wants to take it to the ground this time.

Gsp is all about fighting ppl where they the most weak and we know what that is =)

We also know how gsp deals with another good wrestler (kos) and in this case a great bjj guy, but i think the gameplan will be the same.

I will go with Shields on this one. As much as I like GSP, I can admit that he can't take any presure, he fought relatively smaller guys. Shields took some beating in the 1st round with Hendo, but was O.K. Once he is on top of GSP, GSP is done. Hendo could not throw Shields off him with his Olimpic level wrestling, I don't think GSP can.

GSP is a smart fighter, maybe, he has something that we have not seen yet against Shields.

other good wrestlers gsp outwrestled were driving double leg takedown artists (think blitzing linebacker). shields works from clinch against the cage and his takedowns are sort of judo-ish. if he can get it to the cage, shields dominates.

I am picking GSP, but I consider Shields respectable competition. I would be surprised if Shields wins, but not shocked. Shields has found a way to win 15 times in a row, many of those wins against top fighters and in MW as well as WW--and that is no coincidence.

I think GSP has more tools and he is a smart fighter who will come with a gameplan. I have never been impressed with Shields takedown's, which are usually single-legs from the clinch, and I don't believe that will work with GSP--who has legs like tree-trunks and excellent balance. If Shields can't take Georges down, then I don't see how he can win.

People rarely talk about how physically strong GSP is--many of his former opponents have commented how surprised they were at his strength. Thiago Alvez is a brute, but GSP easily held his own in the clinch with Alvez. Fitch is another big WW who could easily fight at MW and no one doubts Fitch's wrestling credentials, yet Fitch was outclassed by GSP on the ground--and Fitch had a record winning streak too--until he ran into the brick wall called GSP.

In GSP vs. Koscheck 1, GSP out-wrestled the more-decorated Koscheck. In GSP vs. Koscheck 2, Kos stopped Georges from taking him down because that was all he could think about--preventing a takedown--but he could do little else, and only took GSP down once in the entire fight, very briefly. He dared not expose himself to a takedown, so his stand-up suffered consequently.

If the fight goes to later rounds, I am betting GSP will have better conditioning based on consistent past performances where he had energy to spare to the final round.

While I give GSP the edge, but Shields is a worthy enough opponent to make this fight very interesting--maybe we will see a flying armbar.

I am pumped for this fight.
