When Jake Ellenberger enters the Octagon on Saturday night in New Orleans he will bring along an MMA record of 24-5. He will also carry with him the tag of underdog. The oddsmakers have Ellenberger’s opponent, former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields listed as the favorite, a fact that doesn’t seem to concern Ellenberger in the least.

I just never really believed it. Jake Shields is the best middleweight in the world, the best welterweight in the world, like I never believed it. He has beat some very tough opponents, but it’s nothing personal against him, he’s probably a great guy. I’m sure we could be friends afterwards, but I was just never sold on him.” – for the full interview visit MMAWeekly.com.

Some of the tough opponents that Shields had defeated before his 15-fight winning streak came to an end against Georges St-Pierre included Dan Henderson, Martin Kampmann, Robbie Lawler and Jason Miller. For his part, Ellenberger is riding a four fight-winning streak, besting Mike Pyle, John Howard, Carlo Eduardo Rocha and Sean Pierson in his last four fights, after dropping his UFC debut to Carlos Condit.

A victory over Shields, a fighter that most would rank in the top five in the welterweight division would surely help propel Ellenberger up the divisional rankings.

What do you think LowKick’ers, can Ellenberger hand Shields the first two-fight losing streak of his MMA career?

Just because he lost to GSP does not mean the guy isn't one of the best. Look pass the GSP fight and see who Jake Shields has beaten. The guy deserve a little bit of respect.

Idk, I know it was mostly due to the weight cut and all but he got messed up by Kampmann. Though Kampmann is no slouch, hes just the nega-Garcia unfortunately.

How he does against Ellenberger will answer some questions, but not all

Jaypak, Shields won Martin Kampman with a controversial decision gassing out at the third round, and showed nothing against GSP, except for the poke in a eye )). On the other hand, jake Ellenberger has shown good strong wrestling base and good stand up in his last fight. However, for sure shields has better game on the ground, but I think Ellenberger is gonna be too strong for him.

What hype? What the hell is he talking about? Jake's a solid MMA contender with a good record (fact). I haven't noticed any accolades that went beyond reality. You wanna talk hype? Look at all the ridiculous press Barnett is getting. That guy needs to lose soon and crawl back under a rock.

Shield's striking seemed improved in the GSP fight--though that may have been skewed due to striking on GSP's blind side. Shields, the one with the American wrestling chops, never took GSP down once in their fight. Not once---not even close--even with a blind GSP.

This is a big fight for Ellenburger--and he has the tools to defeat Shields. This is a great matchup, and I am looking forward to this fight.
