JDS: Overeem is the ultimate test for my striking, BJJ is Plan B

“I think it’s the ultimate test for my striking,” said dos Santos, who has publicly contemplated an Olympic boxing bid for 2016. “It’s still the biggest challenge. He was a K-1 champion, which is the greatest striking event in the world. He’s a very strong guy, good, but I trust in myself a lot and I try for the knockout in all of my fights. Regardless of him being a striker or not, I’m going for the knockout.

Jiu-jitsu can be Plan B. I’m an MMA fighter, training in everything,” dos Santos said. “I’m well prepared to fight, whether standing or on the ground, and if I find it necessary to take it to the ground, it will happen.” - sherdog.com via (the UG)

Riegning UFC Heavyweight champion Junior "Cigano" dos Santos spoke about his possible gameplan for the fight with "The Demolition Man" Alistair Overeem. JDS declared he would try to KO the Dutchman, claiming that the 2010 K-1 WGP winner is the ultimate test for his striking. Dos Santos finished via KO/TKO 5 out of 8 opponents he faced inside the Octagon, including the former champ Cain Velasquez.

JDS vs. Overeem will headline UFC 146, which will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 26th. The event is co-headlined by the Heavyweight scrap between Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez.

I cant wait for this fight . I really like JDS ,he might be my favorite HW after the king : FEDOR EMELIANENKO. I think JDS is the only guy that i wouldnt mind that much if he was winning against Fedor because he is as humble as fedor and his accent is funny

I agree. Though Reem's chin is suspect, his striking defense is outstanding, and I think it will be very hard for a striker using almost exclusively his hands to land that KO shot. I've never seen Reem have trouble taking anyone down either, and he often does go to his wrestling and BJJ against strikers. Reem by knees or guillotine.

Speed kills amigos, speed kills. At the end of the day supreme boxing is the ultimate weapon; hands are our natural tool of choice in everything we do,that combined with wrestling and BJJ, Cigano has the mental advantage in this one. He'll be 2 fast 4 The Demolition Man,just too fast.

Who has knocked out shane carwin or roy nelson? No one?.... JDS did beat them both silly. Neither fighter knew where they were after their fights with him. Same for EVERY other fighter JDS fought, same will go for the reem.

Reem has to be the toughest fighter JDS has seen. Plus Reem uses more than just his hands. His knees are deadly.

I think that Overeem is by far the most experienced and dangerous fighter he has ever faced and this is a true test of his ability, if the Reem can keep JDS at a distance or even real close he will win,,, remember he has alot of experience and has been in alot of Big fights, this isnt going to be easy for Junior.....

The way i see it is the more you get rocked or knocked out, the weaker the chin. This will be almost the same as JDS vs Velasquez except im thinking this will last lil longer. Reem did beat lesnar into retirement but looked a bit sloppy in doing so. In the end JDS hands will get the job done. Best boxing in mma hands down.

what fight did you see,, sloppy, I guess you dont understand what having to defend a shot is like maybe to the average fan Alister may have appeared to look sloppy,, its called being defensive to a takedown... with JDS this is something that is probablly not a factor so you can expect Alister to be alot more aggressive so maybe he wont look so,,,, ""SLOPPY??""

IDK what fight ya boy eltoro was watching saying the reem looked sloppy in the lesnar fight,, I guess he would have KO'ed Brock alittle quicker or something.... but I think that Alister is going to be the next UFC HW champ,, his chin or no chin he is not going to wait around to get hit by JDS in this fight lets face it he was protecting the takedown with Lesner he pretty much knows junior will come head hunting so he is not going to be defensive in this fight,,,watch... besides you already know what kind of striker HE is.....

What about Nate Diaz's boxing vs Cerrone's kick boxing, or Penn's Boxing vs Florians Muay Thai???? giving an example of when kickboxing beat boxing means nothing, both styles beat each other constantly

JDS is a phenomenal striker. He is also a great ground artist even though he hasn't shown his skills yet. But more important, he's really confident and if this fight ends with a lucky punch, I am pretty sure it is going to be on juniors side. I am a big fan of the reem but I don't like his tentativeness.

I love how people keep saying that JDS has a great ground me when we have nothing to base that on. Overeem was a Euro Abu Dhabi champion. If it goes to the ground I am picking Overeem to win. He probably wins in dramatic fashion standing as well.

I think the fact that Gabe Gonzaga took JDS down. And JDS was able to immediately get back up, shows he is pretty ground savy. Against a Mundial world champ in jiu jitsu. JDS is gonna destroy. I doubt he will need any ground work to do it though.

Overeem has the striking advantage, he also has the ground advantage. The only true toss up is stamina. One dimensional fighters do not last long in this sport. The only way i see Overeem losing is by him being sloppy. Him knocking out Cain was no big surprise to me, the punch landed on the temple, especially since Cain was coming of a lay off, and a suspect chin. He couldn't finish Roy or Carwin, Gonzaga cannot strike well, Werdum knew nothing about Santos. I mean come on, his wins are not impressive if you put them into context. Not saying that Overeem's wins are, but he does have the ground and the striking to defeat Santos majority of the time. If Junior wins it will be a surprise to me.

Reem has an advantage with his legs. JDS will eat reem for lunch with his hands. the reem. and speaking of werdum fight, why didnt reem finish him like jds did?

Ok. Well, first of all winning K-1 is a large feat. It includes using hands, legs, knees etc. It encompasses striking, not just boxing, but all striking within guidelines of the rules. If you argue hands vs hands/legs/elbows/knees Overeem defiantly has the advantage, well, because currently he is the best striker in MMA ("on paper" Although i think Badr Hari would win in a rematch just like he did the second time), from what i've seen in "majority" of fights being a versatile striker will win against a "one trick pony". We have yet to see JDS on the ground in the UFC and his only loss was due to a submission, while we have seen the Reem on the ground, knowing that he can handle himself properly. MMA math does not work, Werdum lost to JDS, Werdum also lost to Arlovski (decision), Arlovski KO'ed Roy, while JDS could not finish Roy. Do you think Arlovski is a better fighter because he KO'ed Roy? If so, he should easily beat JDS. Majority of MMA community believes in styles back match ups (if executed correctly). Even so, JDS was relatively unknown when matched up with Werdum, whom had little to go on as far as "game plan" goes. It was his first UFC fight actually.

I hope this clears up some of my fight logic. On paper Overeem is a clear winner to me, but this is MMA and anything can happen.

wow, overeem is a perfect example of only being as good as your last fight (in the eyes of fans). after the wurdum fight every one was calling allistar overrated. he gets a good win over brock lesnar and all of the sudden hes next level. lol. all ii can say is jds is my favourite fighter and i hope overeem fights him like he fought lesnar, hands down throwing knees. in that case reem wont even last as long as cain did (who every also thought was next level). when are people gonna stop doubting jds?

People have to understand how their striking syles matchup.... Overeem Doesn't get too active with his hands and he's volnerable to getter punched. JDS LOVES to punch... lol If reem goes for kicks jds will be going for HOOKS and CROSSES!
