Injured Shogun Rua will be sidelined until March 2011

Number one Contender Rashad Evans will have to wait to get his chance at new LHW champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Dana White Confirmed today that New champ Shogun Rua wont be back in the Octagon for another eight months, likley returning in March, 2011. Still, White took this as good news saying that his surgically repaired knee is healing well.

"Shogun's great, his knee's coming along great," White said just after the UFC 116 pre-fight press conference. "It's all good."

Rua recently Knocked Out then undefeated Lyoro Machida to capture the title. The two had fought way back at UFC 104 where Machida took a very contreversial decision. It took about 7 months for Shogun to get his second chance. Rua came out aggressive and ko'd Lyoto in the first round but got injured in the process. Now that it is clear he will be sidelined for quite some time a fight for an interim belt may be set up.

this sucks thats his 3rd knee surgery now thats terrible I just hope he comes back strong unlike the Griffin fight , but I think UFC is going to have to make a interm light heavyweight championship, I think it mite be between Evans and Couture(after he beats Toney) or like Evans vs Lil Nog

We need an interim title before that.

Lyoto vs. Rashad 2 or Forrest vs Rashad 2.

Lyoto should face Franklin first (for the second time) giving Forrest the next shot.

Lyoto vs. Forrest is also good.

Poor shogun ... it seems his body can't keep up with his style.

Situation stinks, and like you said, we will probably see an interim championship fight just like with Lesnar/Carwin.

ringrust is gonna affect him, it effects every fighter....as much as i hate to say it (and considering hes the champ so he'll have to fight the no.1 contender) shogun will probably lose his next fight

Don't GSP and Rashad come from the same team? They should rename their camp Hump Force.

i was hoping to see Shogun at least ones this year

i just wonder if hes going to be able to come back as sharp as now

the last time he got serious injuries and surgery's was just before he enter the UFC and it took him a while to get back and lost in the process to Forrest

Yeah i hope the surgery was minor and that he's uses this time to train back to form. I'd like Shogun to fight at 100% (PRIDE Shogun) rather than how he was in his early UFC fights. I also hope his knee problems are not re-occuring, I want Shogun to dominate for many years to come.

not trying to hate but this is not good news for shogun 3 knee surgerys in 4 years that pretty much makes it a chronic problem. your body never truly recovers from stuff like this yes you will feel better but the knee will be weakened. i dont know if it is all on the same knee but in any case it will be at least two operations on one knee. that knee will probaly be at 75% of what it was before he got the initial injury which required the fist operation

Shogun isn't that good. Leg kicks are a cheap way to win without actually fighting! Wait till Bones tears that ass up.

It will be the winner of Lyoto v Rampage who will fight Rashad for the Interim belt and the winner of that fight will fight Shogun for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship of the World WOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I see Machida beating Rampage if Rampage dont shit out again then Machida will this time kill Rashad and then who knows maybe get revenge on Shogun

The Dragon v Shogun III is on the cards people!

Dana White was talking to ESPN radio and he said he was thinking Machida v Rampage as they have both come of off losses but it is also true that there is rumours of Rampage v Lil Nog but they way Lil Nog preformed last time out he dont deserve to move that high up the ladder they should give him Forrest or Jon Jones.

I'm sorry to hear about Shogun's knee and wish him a full and speedy recovery.

In terms of his title - I don't think the UFC should go 8 months without a title fight; even if it's for an interim belt - again.

I know he just won, but this, in my opinion, is ridiculous; to have the division siting around with it's (collective) thumb up it's backside, waiting on an injured champ to get healthy. They certainly didn't give BL that break; and rightly so. No one knew when BL would be back or if, or how long the lay-off might be. Subsequently, they scheduled an interim bout. I believe they should do the same thing here. What if SR re-injures the knee in Dec, Jan or Feb or picks up some other ailment? Then what? Wait again or then have the interim title bout that you should have scheduled months ago? This is not good for the sport and it's bad business. This could nicely set up another re-match with LM; I'd watch that. I'm sure it would be better then Liddell v. Ortiz 3 or Ortiz v. Shamrock 3 - come on.

No - if SR is out for 8 months, then they should immediately schedule an interim title bout. To not do so, in my opinion, leaves the division in limbo and without a "top dog". I would also add that this gives Rashad an opportunity to avenge the loss to LM and regain the title that he lost. There is a world of great opportunity, here. A chance to the lemon that the SR injury is and turn it into lemonade.

Also - if we wait the 8 months and SR comes back and loses his first defense, then what did we wait for? You are not really champ until you defend it - SR has not yet done that. We could spend 8 months waiting around to find out that the real champ is the guy that beat SR and then beat first challenger.

Please do not get me wrong - I love SR. I picked him and pulled for him in his bouts with LM. I just think that the division, the sport and the UFC particularly, needs some clarity here.

NO MORE INTERIM BELTS. If you know he's coming back, and he's still signed with the UFC, there is absolutely no need for an interim belt. It's a totally pointless title. What's wrong with being the # 1 contender? If Evans wants it bad enough, he'll wait. Having to wait longer for fights comes with the territory of title contention. If he wants to fight again before March, he can put his #1 status on the line. If a champ is sidelined indefinitely, he should have to give up the strap. If he gets better and can fight again, he gets a title shot to reclaim what's his. If he wins, great. If he loses, well he probably would of lost it anyway. Notice how Shane didnt have his interim belt sitting in front of him during the press conference? Because Brock was 100% correct in saying that it's a fake belt. No more interim belts please.
