Greg Jackson tells Jon Jones: Check on Machida, go get some fans

On Saturday night, UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones overcame his first taste of adversity, finishing Lyoto Machida with a standing guillotine choke. When Jones was instructed to release the hold by referee John McCarthy, he unceremoniously dropped the unconscious Machida to the mat, where he was attended to as he regained his senses.

While Machida was coming around, Jones’ trainer, Greg Jackson was caught on audio imploring Jones to, “Go check on him, go check on Lyoto, go get some fans.” – for more check the twitter feed from poker pro Terrence Chan

The audio has brought up some questions. Should Jones have checked on Machida without the calls from Jackson?  Does this reflect on the sportsmanship of Jones or perhaps Jones was just caught up in the moment of defending his title and forgot to make his way to his opponent’s corner.

What do you think LowKick’ers, is this much ado about nothing or is there something to Jones’ actions?

I don't even get why this is 'news' - Jon is a young guy who is a great fighter but obviously needs to grow as a person and his coach is giving him good advice.

This is some funny stuff...every time Greg Jackson yells it makes me smile, espeically during the last Cowboy Cerrone fight, as for this clip, its funny n thats about it, no reason to dissect this clip n label Jones arrogant or anything like that

Perhaps it would have been more honorable had Jackson reminded Jones to check on Machida without adding, "go get some fans." If he's genuinely concerned about his opponent's well-being, then by all means, check on him. However, if you're doing it just for public perception, then why bother.

Jones is unquestionably an incredible fighter, but this type of thing only lends credence to the idea that, as a person, he is a phony. If you're an incredibly confident or ****y guy, then own it, embrace it, and make it your own. Pretending to be something you're not, just because that is the person you would like to be, only makes you look like a prick. There may be some who buy into it, but the majority are not gullible enough and will call BS every time.

It is also possible that Greg might think that that was the only argument Jones would understand, if he really is a cold and arrogant person telling him "go and show some sportsmanship" might have been ignored.

I I agree... the fact that this gets it's own article and Cesar Gracie yelling at Nick to "call out that Mother F***er" gets no attention really shows that this is just being drummed up by the haters...let's move on.

This is a fight. Call it MMA, UFC, Kick Boxing, or what ever you want, its still a fight. Fighters are not geared the same way everyone else is. Everyone feels bad for Machida because he got choked out and dropped. Fact is if he didn't want something like that to happen to him then he should have picked another line of work.

People are player hating Jones because he is so dominant in the fights. Forest ran out of the ring like a little bitch but you didn't see anyone saying Anderson should have chased after him to make him feel better. Its the fight game. If you cant handle it don't watch.

actually this is news. everyone says how great jon jones is' how he is so humble and nice and does all these great things. this video pretty much sums up the fact that maybe he's only doing those things because people are telling him to. his earpiece was just exposed.

    @LowkickDick

Nick diaz doesnt hide who he is....Neither does Gracie. We all know they are like that.

Jones however wants you to believe that hes some humble guy....no, he is not.

If anything its the nuthuggers that will just dismiss this and say haters are somehow to blame for Greg Jackson having to tell Jones to act fake and pretend like he cares.

Like what FightLife said, he needs to own up to himself and not put out fake humility to gain fans

If his claims of respecting Machida were true this humble champ of ours would not have dropped Machida's life less body like he did.

Even if he is arrogant, the guy is being told by the ref to let him go, what is he supposed to do lay him down like a baby or something? People are being way too sensitive about this. This is a fighting sport, things like this will happen.

I don't know why you were weaked. I am a huge machida fan and don't care much for jones but come on.... It a hell of a thing to be in a fight. Especially one where you are losing and need to change gears and win. Jones got caught up in the moment. Could he be more humble... I think so. But this is hardly an issue. His admition to machida getting to him is the most humble I have heard him. He is young. Trust me he will end up face down some day. But prob not soon.

I'm not a bones fan, but he had just beat The Dragon for Christ's sake! And what I meant to say was that "he more than likely would have checked in on Machida without Jackson's help- eventually". His admition to being confused by Machita took me by surprise as well.

He's young and he was caught up in the moment.......but this still doesn't make me a fan, seeing as he keeps clipping my favorite fighters off one by one. It's not fun to watch, but I keep tuning in, because like you movescamp; I also trust in the fact that somebody, someday, will plant his face into the floor. He's on top of the world for now though.

Thanks for the backup on the weaks. I couldn't figure out why I got so fired up with them either. But it looks like I caught you on fire to!!! You added more fuel by trying to calm the flames!!

He's real enough to leave shogun, machida, and many others laying there on the canvas when he's done with them. You guys crack me up. If he doesn't tear someones face off, he's not trying hard enough. If he doesn't go check in on somebody that could have tapped but didn't, he's a blatant asshole? Glad this is fighting forums and not the logic forums. Dana white and Joe Silva didn't bother checking on Machida's lifeless body, why should Jones?

More people should care about themselves. It makes caring about other a lot easier. Plus, if more people paid attention to their OWN games, we would have A LOT more fighters like Jon Jones out there. To act like these guys are not human and should put themselves last is exactly why your commenting on somebody else's career and why nobody here cares about any of our careers. You can call it selfish, good parenting, determination, or whatever you want. It's a quality that lends him the Belt until that quality disappears.

The whole sport should just be filled with Nate Marquardts who sits where he sits for a reason. Being nice a humble didn't keep him from testing positive and losing a career.

Same goes for teachers? If you want to be real, that is the case for MOST occupations. The real pay is in the fringe benefits, whether it comes in the form of time off from work, or a badge that lets you think your above the law. Why people choose careers is not nearly as important as what they do with their careers. There are plenty of good cops, teachers and doctors out there. It's just hard to find them in the cesspool of shitty ones out there.

Is there written articles of Jones being full of himself or something? I don't understand all the hate on this guy, maybe Im just naive I don't know. But there are WAY more arrogant guys in the UFC (who aren't even champions) then Jones.

As for the comment by Greg Jackson, not all UFC fighters go and check on their opponents. They know that there are medical people there and their going to do their jobs.

People are going to grasp at straws and find whatever they can to make Jones the bad guy.

People love to jump on a bandwagon don't they? I really don't think Jon jones deserves all the shit he gets. How does something that Greg Jackson said make out Jon Jones to be a bad person? He might have checked without Jackson saying anything at all, or if Jackson just said "Is Lyoto Ok?", Jones may have responded the same way. I've seen plenty of guys get dropped in the ring. Once the ref jumps in, you let go. They just fought their heart out for a round and a half with their adrenalin pumping, and the second that Jones finds out that he's come back after a shit round and won the match, defeating somebody that he idolizes, the referee tells him to get off Lyoto and he's meant to lay him down softly? Can you imagine what was going through his head at that point? I don't blame him for not thinking straight, he probably didn't really think about Lyoto dropping that hard. He didn't do anything bad, he just didn't do something good, if that makes sense? It seems to me like people love to find a person to hate as a group (or a team or a country etc). It happens to be Jon Jones right now and i think it's unjust.

That is what I was trying to say, but it is clear to see that we are either being misunderstood, or some people out here just absolutely refuse to see anything from another's perspective. Let the Weaks rain down for no reason.I'm not even a Jones fan and I can see that he really did nothing out of the ordinary for a fighter in the heat of the moment at the end of a fierce battle with a top contender.

You are right about judging, but there are many who stay in the stands, critiquing the athletes. Besides, maybe he WAS just waiting for Machida to wake up and be coherent enough to make sense to approach him then. Its not like Jones was standing there waiting for Machida, staring at him, watching.

The question is not so much if what Jones did was right, what disturbs me is that Jackson gave such a pathetic reason. It should have been "Go check on Lyoto, it is what you're supposed to do" or even "its the right thing to do". "go get some fans" is really cold, and disrespectful - towards the fans.

That part I agree with completely. All Jackson had to say was" go check on Machita". But so often in life we speak before we have a chance to think, and before we know it, it's all over the internet with people damning you for something you may or may not remember even saying in the first place.

Go get some fans? Earn his keep? Learn how to get fans? The guy is a mere pup in this sport. Let Jackson teach this guy what he should be doing. Isn't he just teaching him the right way? Everyone knows how to get fans and a show of compassion or good sportsmanship is a way of succeeding in this. Most fighters have figured this out. Heck, some of them still haven't got it yet (Evans). besides, for Jackson to say to Jones what he said, how does this become disrespectful? Did he say to go flip off the fans? Or to go spit on as many as he could? That is disrespectful, but to teach a youngster who just defended his belt? I would hope to have a teacher/coach to teach me what to do at that age. Wouldn't checking on Machida gain him some fans? Then how is Jackson disrespectful? He just told him a fact, a truth. and so? what if he did say this? what does it matter? it was something that was needed to be said to a young man who needed to hear it like that. a teacher to a student.

Agreed in that he is still developing his public persona. Look at George Forman. Back in his heyday when he was fighting Ali, he wasn't the kindly, jolly guy we know him as today. He was sullen and fearsome. It wasnt until years later that he developed into that well loved guy that the public embraced with open arms. Jones is young and he's a great fighter and a smart guy. As he matures, he'll figure this stuff out.

When he dropped Machida, my first thought was "Damn, that was cold." I mean he did win the fight and it was a display of dominance. These guys are fighters after all. And it was a heat of the moment kind of thing and Jon Jones isnt given to animated displays of emotion. He plays it cool so to speak. But it did smack of bad sportsmanship and I'm pretty sure Greg Jackson thought the same thing.

He knows that once they see how much better he is over their heroes, they'll soon begin to cheer for him. We all just want a hero to cheer for. He is too young to be anybody's hero, IMO. It'll come. Remember: we, too, were once his age. We pretty much would have reacted close to how he does. Someone booed me, I'd probably flip him or her off. I didn't give a sh*t.

Some sad specimens of humans hate Jones so much they even use words from another person to reflect on Jones. the words Greg spoke reflect on himself - he said them not Jones - and have nothing to do with Jones.

In the prefight press conference Jones spoke at length how he has much to learn and how some fighters in his camp are better than him at different aspects and he is learning from them. So tell me, how does someone as ****y and arrogant as Jones is made out to be say something as humble as that?

In the actual fight he possibly did not even know Machida was out and turned away as he let go so probably didn't know he dropped as hard as he did. pre fight he was also very respectful towards Machida giving him credit where credit is due.

Bro, this is a fight. A contest to see who can beat the other. There is no honor and respect in fighting. In learning from your sensei, sure. Be humble and learn, absorb, etc. These guys are training, not to defend themselves, but to beat his opponent. If Jones wants to hold that belt, he better not show compassion. He can't hold back on his striking. He can't try not to injure his opponent. These guys (and females) must do whatever it takes to get that 'W'. Mustn't forget that.

We get fragments of information from the media about fighters and yet their are people who use these sound bites to form an opinion about a fighter as a person. The fact of the matter is most MMA fighters are very different from what we see and read online.

You guys act like Jones is the only one who doesn't care about his opponents. There are just a couple guys who really see this as testing your Martial art skills against someone else. Be nice, show compassion, show good sportsmanship, but at least allow someone to teach him the whens and hows. You know; like wait til the guy wakes up first, then tell him when to go. Timing. Jackson is his trainer, his coach. Let him show him the ropes of the MMA world. There is no one to blame here. Nobody did anything wrong.

It's his size, strength and reach advantage, and yes an incredible talent as well. He's gonna clean out the LHW division easily and then get his jaw broken at HW.

jones fans are calling everybody who doesnt like jones a hater.

i dont hate him, i dislike him, an im waitng to see his ass get whipped even thogh it seems to be in a distant future....

I think people dislike him because his fake....

he pretends to be a humble guy but he is NOT.

If he would go out with a badboy attitude he would gain more repect because that would play along with his actions.

it WASNT wrong to drop jones or not going to check him out, its just the opposite of the caracter he tries to play...

    maybe he is schitzofrenic??

What he really meant to say in the ring was, Hey Jon Jones, check the handy work you did on Machidas forehead. Steal his fans!

Writers sure like to make a lot out of nothing. He is his coach and trainer. He is teaching him how to be. When to do things. Maybe Jones had been waiting for Machida to clear his head first. No use walking up to an unconscious man and have a one-sided conversation, right? What kind of article is that? Jackson told Jones what to do. He is his coach, isn't he? Jones is no idiot, but he is fresh in this game. Give him room to breathe. Room to grow. This guy will never, ever be a Rashad 'Sho boat' Evans. He wold have already done that. Evans has pranced, talked trash to opponents and puffed his chest out, disrespecting others in front of cameras, since he began this sport. Recall all his prancing in the Octagon, when he began his career? Recall Hughes not wanting sh*t to do with him?

Why bring up something not even noteworthy about Jones? Maybe he told Jones : don't check on him. Don't check on Machida. screw those dumb fans. Or maybe, go get Machida a fan? Who TF cares?
