Greg Jackson: Georges St. Pierre's plan was to knock out Josh Koscheck

"He tried really hard to knock him out but Koscheck is really tough. Like I said, Thiago Alves, Jon Fitch... I want to make this clear; these guys are not some bums. These guys are fantastic, phenomenal fighters. For Georges to win is one thing; for Georges to dominate is another thing. If he's lucky enough to get some finishes in, that's great. We're trying to finish them. It's just kind of hard when they're incredibly tough."

Georges St. Pierre's coach Greg Jackson revealed in an interview to Sherdog.com that his protégé's plan was to finish the fight against Josh Koscheck via a Knockout. St. Pierre dominated Koscheck throughout all five rounds, thanks to lazer-sharp combinations of jabs, right hooks and low kicks. It was Georges St. Pierre's 5th title defense, and eighth consecutive victory since the loss to Matt Serra at UFC 69. Jake Shields is expected to be St. Pierre's next challenger, with a possible bout at UFC 131 in Toronto, which will take place on April 30th next year.

Georges didn't land very many 'big' shots. It was a huge jab fest.

I don't know man. I didn't count but it seemed like he landed as many big shots as is normal in an mma fight. I think he just landed SOOOO many jabs that it seemed like he wasn't landing big shots. Had more of them landed on the jaw and behind the head instead of closer to the top of the head I think George would have got his KO. He certainly had Kos rocked once or twice.

i have a lot of respect for georges, but i honestly dont think he was trying that hard to finish, i mean everytime he went in for that jab he ducked straight back out...from rounds 3 onwards kos could barely see out that eye, i was expecting much more high kicks from georges and when he connected to actually pull off some combinations...i suppose he was right to do it cos kos' right hand is stronger than a lot of people think...i was hoping that he would go for the kill but i think hes such a nice guy that even after all kos had said he didnt want to hurt him more than he needed to.....no complaints from me though i thought it was a pretty entertaining fight

Probably ''safe mode'' again. He even said he did not want to commit too much as Josh has a crushing overhand right.

GSP waste the last 2 mins of the last round by the cage!

when he should have attack with everything he got!

Koscheck was really hurt and the risk of Koscheck turning the tables was too low. GSP lack of killer instinct is the only thing holding him from moving up . but i was glad to see GSP on a stand up fight he just needs to work on his power shots

GSP landed some good shots BUT the problem is that he has no power behind what he throws. common now, when has GSP ever knocked anybody out? NEVER. He fought a very intelligent fight and is a legend no doubt..

Ya as much as GSP wanted to knock Kos out, i think Kos's eye was enough for GSP's "revenge". I mean cmon that thing looks brutal. KO or no KO I still impressed that a JAB broke an orbital bone like that. I mean I've seen vicious elbows break orbital bones but never just a jab. To me that's impressive.

Agreed. And now Kos is laid up for 6 to 9 months between surgery and recovery, and that was 25 minutes of embarassment, no room for excuses or explanations.

He was hit with more than a jab there too. it was the jab that started it but George threw almost everything at that spot.

Absolute lies, Greg, who gameplans the fight entirely, chose to jab and point fight instead of finishing. as he always does, safe fighting for lyfe is Jackson's philosophy!

I think that GSP was trying to get KOs down in the last round to finish him but couold not keep him in there, I think the fight should´ve been stopped between 3 and 4th round but definately they should not let Kois go out for the 5th.

Ya if you look at it that way, if the Doc did his job properly, it should have been stopped between 3rd and 4th, which in fact would have given GSP the finish he was looking for even tho it wasnt a KO. Look at his last two fights, two tough guys. Hardy shouldve tapped twice, any normal sane guy would have tapped twice in that fight. And Kos should have been Doc stoppage. And i read above and see "the tough guy excuse is getting old" but I'm sorry but alot of guys wouldve stopped i.e. brandon Vera who got a broken orbital in Jones fight and turtled. I dont think you can count out the tough opponent excuse in any of GSPs last three fights (alves hardy Kos)

Yup, good post warcrazed. BJ got stopped. Kos could have quit and no one would have thought bad of him after such a beating. Hardy could have had his arm broke for being so stubborn.

This fixation people have with "finishing" fights is really puzzling... It's like people watch fights like porn or something. Of course I do not like boring fights anymore than anyone else, but if you found this fight boring, you need to get another hobby.

Nope, it was not a boring fight at all. People who do not care about finishing fights look at MMA as a pure sport. There is nothing wrong with this point of view but it is not the only valid point of view. There are two types of people who have a problem with fighters not finishing fights. The first kind are exactly as you just described. For them MMA is some kind of weird violence porn. There is something wrong with these people and they should seek treatment. The other kind are people who look at MMA as Martial Art. As a Martial Artist one of the goals is to be able to handle any hand to hand combat situation as efficiently as possible. If one does not finish a fight, preferably in short order, there is always the possibility that a single opponent will get a lucky strike or catch a sub. In a street fight if one does not dispatch opponents quickly they may be overcome by the opponent's friends. An MMA fight is not a street fight but those of us who view it as a contest of martial skill are viewing it through the lens of what it says about a fighter's ability in a "real" fight.

Its the sport. "Keep it out of the judges hands." KO is winning the fight with a exclamation point. Lets face it, there is a new breed of mma. You are right tho this fight was not boring at all. I also do not believe KOS got schooled but it didnt look like he showed GSP any new tricks.

to be honest, I never looked at MMA in that light in your second point and it facinates(spelling?) me. Good way to view it. The problem being is (like you pointed out) it is a sport, and athletes are more concerned with the W. To be honest, as long as its not a boring fight, I'm entertained.

I also think if you put GSP in a street fight situation, you'd def see him finishing pple more :P

Good post. those moaning about finishes need to ask what did Daley do against Kos? Daley has plenty of great KO's on his resume and hits with more power than GSP. But is he anywhere near as good as GSP? NO!! Power and finishing isn't everything. Dominating and hit and not be hit can only be done by a very select few in MMA. GSP is one of these select few and probably the best. Any detractors for his lack of finishing are just devoid of the recognition of his superior skill. They can all see how a finisher like Daley got tooled by Kos, so have no arguement GSP should be trying harder for the finish. 25 minutes of pure skill is better than throwing heavy and maybe getting a KO. GSP knows this, as does any other smart mma fan.

Agreed. I think you would see him use different tactics. He would likely revert to some of his Karate training. He trained Kyokushin whereas I trained Shotokan but some of the things we trained a lot was the side kick to the knee and keeping multiple opponents lined up using foot work (you see Machida using simmilar foot work) so that you are effectively only fighting one person at a time. Assuming Kyokushin and Shotokan aren't too different I think it is safe to say that GSP is familiar with these things. That all brings up another point though, which is that due to some techniques (like kicks to the knee) being illegal in sport fighting, there is only so much you can extrapolate from it. Still though, it is the best test a Martial Artist can have.

Shields will take GSP down. If Kos could do it once, Shields will do it many times. Considering the way Shields weathered Hendo's early storm I really don't see GSP destroying him. I think GSP will win but just by a hair. I think Georges is going to try to keep it standing but is going to get taken down repeatedly.

Fitch was finished twice in his early career. Mike Pyle choked him, & Wilson Gouveia finished him with a knee. A TKO I'm sure. Since then he's pretty much ground out decisions with a few (T)KO's & submissions thrown in to try break the cycle :)

no body said it was boring, people like you are just as bad as people who say every fight needs to be a KO like Mortal Combat or something!

the fact that is it was a technical beatdown where one guy was in a total dominating position against a guy who was scared shitless of him and his abilities. Kos totally respected Georges on every level and was petrified of him...when do you remember the least time he was so timid and didn't initiate any takedowns save for one?

I will explain this further tonight on our Radio show with Anton, so tune in :)

Yes - Chandella is the black girl. And yes, she's got a great ###. Her boobs are also her own; which is where the plastic surgery remark came from. Most of the ring girls, if not all, except for Chandella, have fake boobs.

Is loking like Jake Shield is next GSP gona get owned. Shields has been undefeated since 2004, and is riding a 15-fight win streak, both of which accomplishments are longer than the run that UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva currently rides.

Shields only won his UFC debut cos of shit judges / fixed judges. kampmann had submission attempts, knees, punches and elbows aplenty against hugging, and takedowns. i know who really won that fight and who was more beat up. shields will get owned by GSP. Don't believe the hype.

GSP should go to Holland and train with those K-1 guys. I really think they will make him a much better striker and he will be able to finish fights if he trains with them. Phil Nurse is a good Thai teacher but not as good as Ernesto hoost or the guys that teach at Golden Glory. It would be a smart move IMO.
