Maynard successfully executed his trademark gameplan of takedowns and ground and pound, completely eliminating Kenny Florian's striking and BJJ. Maynard secured the desired takedowns over and over again, which allowed him to score valuable points leading up to a 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 Unanimous Decision.
The biggest question leading up to this fight was whether Gray Maynard will be able to impose his will on Florian. And that's exactly what the TUF 5 participant did. Florian chased Maynard around the Octagon during most past of the fight, putting his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to work only in the remaining minutes of Round 3.
Many fans could be disappointed with the fact that Maynard fight will fight for the title, but "The Bully" is currently 8-0-1 in his UFC campaign, and definitely a number one contender in the Lightweight division, especially after a victory over a fighter of Florian's caliber. Kenny Florian collected two consectuvie victories after the defeat against BJ Penn at UFC 101, will now look to work his way back to the top in future Lightweight bouts.

Boring fighter , Maynard should stick to another sport
can stand wrestlers that want to win at all coast , even making their fights so boring and long , fans dont pay to see him win by out wrestling other guys , Gomi vs Edgar hahaha
No you pay to see the fight. IF you dont wana see wreslting is like not wanting to see physical contact in football. Dont watch a UFC fight if you have certain things that you would prefer not to see.

Maynard vs Edgar is gonna a great story line for the hype. The only guy that beat Frankie is next inline to try and take his belt. Nice.
G Maynard is one of the most boring fighters in MMA..I really hope Edgar beat him this time...This kid is just not champion material IMO. No champ should be that boring.
I'm a huge fan of wrestling in MMA and it's not because of my wrestling background. The facts for me though are that Maynard is truly a boring as* fighter.
He's extremely reluctant to fight for fear of getting caught. Does he win, yea but every fuking fight of his is a complete snooze fest. It doesn't help any that he has a dry dull personality. he is NO draw.
Sadly, I see Edgar vs Maynard = Maynard next champ. Nate Diaz should be next in line against the winner of that fight.

Ladies and gents, the most boring champion in UFC history. Dana doesn't want him to get the shot but he doesn't have a choice. Maynard better step it up or they might have to get Aldo up to 155 to knock his ass out.

No ****ing way dude, Maynard outbores Fitch any day of the week. At least Fitch hurts guys, damages them a bit. I don't think Maynard landed a clean shot the whole fight, he was more bruised than Kenny.

Terrible. No plan to finish the fight, little or no effective strikes landed. Compare with Maia, every time he took Miranda down he was constantly advancing towards a submission. Very exciting to watch (although the dumb-ass crowd booed). Maynard basically just avoided getting beat up by holding on to kenny and putting his weight on him. It's like if you were in a street fight and a guy was doing that to you, you would eventually give up because you couldn't do anything and it'd just be boring and pointless to continue. But when you walk away unscathed, you wouldn't feel like you got beat, just controlled by a guy who didn't really want to fight. Wrestling has to be used as a point to intiate good striking and submissions or it's nothing and these guys are scoring too well in the judges eyes and shockingly even in Joe Rogan's eyes. I felt Kenny won the first round, he landed some good strikes, Maynard just got the take-down but Joe said Kenny was definitely 2 rounds down. What a load of crap! But fighters have to work out how to avoid being held onto for 3 rounds andbeat these boring guys up. It's their fault if they lose. It's the age of the wrestler in MMA at the moment but the next generation will eradicate these boring leg-humpers and we'll get more exciting fighters.

Yeah that's right and I said it's their fault if like Kenny they lose. I wanted Kenny to win, but if Gray had won by landing effective strikes and going for subs even if by decision, i'd take my hat off to him, but he didn't. my point still stands. Edgar was a prime example of how it should be done.

I agree with your views here. I was also disappointed and a bit surprised when Rogan said, and ultimately the judges as well, that Kenny had lost that first round. Kenny was more active, landed more strikes, and controlled the pace (a slow pace, but still). Maynard scored a late takedown, but it was ugly and the way he struggled for it was pathetic. I agree with points awarded for takedowns, but anyone can just wrap around a guy and hang on as they slide down to their own knees and trip him up..... Anyway, yea Edgar put on a clinic.
i think its harsh to say he is the most boring fighter in mma like come on how many people have stopped kenny florian that just aint easy. i do agree he shud have engaged more and that fight was boring but there was alot on the line for gray so i understand but personally if yu call yourself a fighter yu gotta put it all on the line

Gray is not the brightest bulb in the box. I thought he was just a little media shy but now think he's just, well, dumb.

Looks like we'll have a new LW champ in the coming months. Gray will undeniably beat frankie. the way i saw last night was if either kenflo or maynard won they would have been the new champion if edgar held the belt. Edgar is fast, he can latch to you and drag you to the ground but it doesn't look like he can fight...gray's going to demolish him.

UFC 118 was BORING! Don't get me wrong, I like wrestling and GnP, but this was a lay and pray fest. The rules as they stand greatly favors wrestlers, but handicaps striking and BJJ. In order to stop LnP, Dana White should allow the bottom fighter to upkick the top fighter ala Silva vs Okami. I guarantee that fighters like Fitch and Maynard would get dismantled.
Since takedowns are worth so much in the judges eyes, stuffing takedowns should count for something too. This should even the playing field a bit.
