Reigning Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre, who will look to make his seventh consecutive title defense when he meets Carlos Condit at UFC 137, discusses his opponent, as well as Nick Diaz's withdraw from the fight. St. Pierre says that while he was looking forward to facing Diaz, he believes that his new opponent, Condit, is the true number-one contender.

Georges St. Pierre

"Nick Diaz, he did not show up for the Press Conference and, like Lorenzo Fertitta said to me, if you don't show up for the Press Conference, we don't want to take the chance that he won't show up for the fight. I do not want to train eight-weeks for a fight and then at the end not fight and not be paid because a guy doesn't show up or a fighter doesn't show up for any reason. Nick Diaz is the fight that everyone wanted to see, including myslelf, I wanted to fight the guy a lot, but now after what happened, I cannot do anything. I might fight him another day. ... Condit is very good. I truly believe that Condit is the number-one contender. Nick Diaz is the fight that everone wanted to see because of the hype, but I believe Condit, in the UFC, is the number-one contender. He beat a lot of guys, like (Jake) Ellenberger. A lot of the best guys, he knocked them out cold, and I think he deserves a title shot."

So true. He'd make the same comment if Diaz' replacement was a coffee table. Probably add something like "that table truly is going du be my toughest opponent yet; he has great conditioning dat guy and very solid legs too!"

True but lamps usually pick up new techniques quickly - they're pretty bright fighters.

Condit is amazing, his style is simply a little too wild, it starts crisp and looses its togetherness, I believe GSP will be able to see things telegraphed as the rounds progressed. Condit was able to knock so many people out because they allowed the fight to become a war, where everyone is swinging and standing in the pocket. GSP doesn't do that.

Nick Diaz is more dangerous because of his style, he doesn't get more wild and though he doesn't throw as many kicks and knees as Condit, he remains poised and can slowly get GSP to engage. I think GSP is a liiiiiiittle bit happy things went the way they did, though Condit is a great fighter.

I agree with GSP, I felt long before the Diaz - GSP fight was even announced, that he's the real threat to GSP, good off his back, and pretty good stand up, GSP won't be able to do his usual things to him, I see Condit being good enough on his back that GSP might take him there, have a near miss in being submitted then being like hmmmm maybe i wont do that again (condit always has florian like sharp elbows, and can throw em well from his back).. this really IS a much more difficult fight than Diaz would be ... time will tell, as im sure he will get a shot eventually, unless he loses badly to Penn, then he might get koscheck's and fitch;'s until he puts a few in a row together.. But honestly, I dont see him beting BJ either, and ridicule me now, and apologize when it happens!

Jake shields was finished in the 1st round only recently. george couldn't do it in 5, he actually ate alot of jabs from shields too. Dan hardy submitted in the third recently, and beaten to the punch consistently by an retireing fighter, gsp didn't stand with Dan for even 2 min. Yea the list probably goes on too.. so whats your point, in trying to make diaz look like a hack?

GSP is untouchable. Diaz isn't. People make Diaz look human and nearly finish him. No one has made GSP look human for some time. I'd rather be known as Superman than Batman.

No, GSP wouldn't have stood in front of Daley like Diaz did. GSP is a tactician who listens to the advice of master strategist Greg Jackson. Nick Diaz is an egocentric pothead who listens to nobody. In a word: Duh.

There is so crap said in MMA that when a gentlemanly guy speaks respectfully people don't know what to make of it. What GSP is saying is reasonable...unless you are a mindkonTROLLe

guarentee that the diaz boys will both hold ufc gold. did u not see what nate did to takanori gomi ... he manhaldled him and diaz will beat anyone they put in front of him. gsp will not beable to hold that belt for much longer as he is fighting the best in the division now and they know how to finish fights unlike him so well see what happens

I was born at night, but not last night, unlike you. Just start watching ufc last week did we? GSP has been putting down top competition for years, to think somehow Nick Diaz, who has come and gone from the UFC prior, is somehow 'new blood' in your mind, is ridiculous. Go back to watching pokemon or dragon ballz.

oh yes, did you not see what rory mcdonald did to diaz? and how condit was getting much the same treatment? That's cause Condit has some heart and he out willed him to come back and finish that fight like he did, and this is exactly why I think he has best chance of beating GSP, either Diaz brother would have 'given up' and been stuck under rory and got decisioned as a result. and to think you said nate will be a champ cause he beat gomi... unreal lol.. totally unreal.

I wonder what GSP will say when he founds out that Condit has been injured and Diaz has replaced him? Condit was a great fight, but Diaz is a tougher fight at the moment. Flip Flop George. Although i kinda understand why GSP does that. He needs to convince himself that the fighter across from him is the toughest test of his career every time he fights.

I think Nate was right,,,GSP dodged a bullet. Condit will be a tough fight for GSP but he won't know what to do with Diaz standing in the pocket, taunting him. Georges is just giving Diaz more reason to beat his ass when he finally does have to fight him.

Diaz not showing up for a fight? thats like santa not showing up for christmas. Nick always shows up to fight .

The UFC is just punishing Diaz for not playing their silly hype for the media game. The imaginary rivalry between Rampage and Jones was laughable. I don't blame Diaz for not playing.

With all due respect Diaz wants to be paid the big bucks right? Then he must follow what the UFC has asked him to do. A fight success depends on the promotion of that fight. I do however agree that Nate would have turned up on fight night but again as a Business the UFC has to make sure that all commitments are meet and Nate failed to fulfill his part and therefore the UFC had no choice. If your own trainer said your wrong then Nate must be very wrong.

To be honest i think Diaz would have definately given GSP the better fight, taking nothing away from Condit who is also a beast. It's just that Diaz would have been more of a threat, standing or on the ground. His striking is off the charts right now, that's undisputable, he has great accuracy combined with a long reach which gives a lot of opponents problems, not to mention his unorthodox style and the amount of strikes he throws. Diaz isn't scared of being taken down either like some fighters are, because he is equally, if not more, dangerous there. Diaz has caught some of the best blackbelts out there in submissions, the most recent being Cyborg Santos i think....

.....don't get me wrong, Condit is a great fighter and i'm a big fan of his also and he is deadly on the feet against anyone in the WW division, GSP included, i just think his ground game can't really be compared to Diaz's can it? i mean Diaz really has what you would call an offensive guard, more than defensive. If GSP decides to take Condit down and control him on the ground and inflict some GnP and win the fight that way i don't think Condit will have an answer for it, less so than Diaz would anyway. I'm not too bothered anyway really because Diaz vs Penn is going to be one hell of a competitive match, more competitive than Condit and GSP imho and who knows, GSP may fight Diaz down the road anyway.......

Love how most of you are saying GSP dodged a bullet, hes lucky, blah blah. The dude showed up to the "beauty pageant". He did everything necessary to get this fight going. Diaz can talk all the shit he wants, but it was GSP who was alone at the press conference waiting.

Diaz pussed out. He's facing the man. You don't go years talking shit about a guy saying he's ducking you or doesn't want to fight and don't even show up to the stare down.

Show some respect to the man who plays the game and stop nut hugging a dude who was nearly finished recently.
