Speaking via satellite at UFC Fight Night 24, UFC Welterweight Champion discussed his upcoming title defense against Jake Shields. St. Pierre revealed he went back to his Kyokushin Karate roots, promising to surprise the fans, as well as his opponent Jake Shields. It will be St. Pierre's sixth UFC Welterweight title defense, and his third fight in Canada under the UFC banner.

If victorious, GSP may face the reigning UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson "The Spider" Silva, in what without a doubt will be the most high profile fight in Mixed Martial Arts history.

GSP vs. Shields will headline UFC 129, which will take place on April 30th at the already sold-out Rogers Center in Toronto, Canada.

Win or lose, the fight between GSP and Anderson Silva may not happen IMHO, yet it may never happen. As far as the surprise goes, I'm actually looking forward to seeing what "Mr unpredictable" will be doing differently this time around.

oddly i get the feeling that gsp will take shields down and and try control him on the ground.... everyone is expecting gsp to stand, including shields.... dont be supprised if gsp goes to the mat and looks for the sub

i would like to see jake shields making a run at the middleweight division first before gsp,i think that wouldnt happen but there are a lot of good matchup for him. js vs fitch kosheck alvez diego johnson penn etc.. with his last performance i dont think it will be easy. but im also excited for this fight though since js is th last mw champ of strikeforce and he really did some good fights especially with the henderson fight

gsp is going too keep it standing !! shields got nothing for gsp in the stand up ! all so gsp is going too mix his kicks in with his new found boxing skills . every time shields goes for his shoot gsp is going to be countering and moving out .

you make some good points but GSP's strong base and athleticism will play a huge factor in the grappling, GSP technical level is good enough therefore his HUGE advantage physically will nullify Sheilds imo. One area where I feel Sheilds might have a chance is if GSP try's to take his back people ignore the fact that GSP back control is far from great if you disagree you must have forgotten that both Alves and Hardy only escape from GSP when to let him take their back. Here' a quote from Gregg Jackson in the corner of GSP against Alves '' STOP TAKING HIS BACK IT'S TOO RISKY'' Guys like A.Silva and Penn usually sub guys when they get peoples back considering GSP has taken all of his opponents back and hasn't finished in so long tells it own story. That will be the only opening for Sheilds imo

GSP wont need to worry about changing levels tho because all he has to do is stop the takedown and stand and strike with the guy. You cannot argue, GSP has superior striking and his takedown defense is, and probably even more so come fight night, pretty solid. Id argue that GSP is more solidly built than Shields so i dont think its fair to say shields is the bigger fighter considering he's going to be mentally messed up about cutting weight given what happened last time. I'm sticking with GSP on this fight, I think he's got everything to his advantage but the submission game(which shields is obv better at) but with lack of grappling control, i dont think we will see a sub by shields

Corey, I agree with 90% of your post.

Warcrazed, Shields is pretty solid too. He might have a little more fat that Georges but not much. He has a small size advantage. I also don't see Shields being "messed up" about the bad wt cut. He had an injury that kept him from doing it the right way. It was a one off and it isn't going to get to him or be a factor.

I know I picked GSP to take this fight but I'm sensing an upset shocking approaching.

It's hard to ignore Shields' accomplishments and his Wrestling/BJJ. This a guy who outclassed Jon Fitch in a submission wrestling competition. The only other person to do that was, of course, GSP.

While he has a very questionable chin, Jake has quick recovery attributes and good instincts. I sincerely doubt that GSP will knock out Shields so all of this "I'm going to surprise Shields" is kinda moot. The magic eight ball says Georges is working on his takedown defense and BJJ for this fight.

oddly enough the video that never gets any attention is when jon fitch beats jake in a grappling match they competed twice with each guy winning once. i just cant see jake being a threat here look at his last couple fights mayhem, hendo and kampmann all three guys were never in any danger nor took any damage at all i just cant see the slower less technical wrestler like jake as a threat

@ doomsdayapex, Dude, are you saying shields has a "questionable" chin?

Shields was hit clean by Hendo and still recovered fairly quickly!

Honestly, know the facts before making off the wall statements like that!

    Shields chin is like GRANITE!

True, I did forget about that one.

Well here's the kicker unfortunately, Jake doesn't have to cause damage in order to score points. Most judges count the takedown, not what the fighter decides to do with.

Hey, we all said the same thing about the Hendo bout, and boy let me tell you, the entire MMA community was silenced the following day.

But let's not do the Fedor-Werdum thing, and assume Jake is going to get completely outclassed here.

GSP needs to get back to the GSP of old for this fight. Busting out spinning back kicks and superman punches. Don't want to turn this into a grappling match with Shields, he can out grapple the best. Ask Dan Henderson.

dan henderson has a problem with cardio, he destroyed shields in the first round, he destroyed anderson in first round, sheilds will be no match for GSP, only if gsp gets careless, GSP is better stand up, takedowns, and GSP is extremly hard to keep down, better cardio, onesided fight if you ask me

My mind was blown that fight last year. Logically and on paper, Hendo being an Olympic caliber wrestler and very dangerous on the feet I saw no way Shields was going to be beat him.

Shields not only survived some of Hendo's best shots, he put on a grappling control clinic.

The one thing that is questionable though is if Shields is prepared to fight at Welterweight this time. He didn't look that great against Martin Kampmann and the weight cut from Middleweight might have been difficult for him. If that's the case, GSP should be able to exploit Shield's gas tank.

But the ground game is where jake lacks, not necessarily the wrestling but bjj, i mean give mayhem 10 more secs and he woulda choked Jake out. GSP as weve seen has good subs, thats what im expecting, GSP taking jake to the ground and finishing with a choke or a lock.

Usually during segments like this, they show both fighters in separate segments. Unless I missed it, Shields was given NO air time during last nights fights ( where this GSP interview was conducted).

This doesn't surprise me, given the fact it was Dana himself who started talking about the '"dream fight" between GSP n Silva after Silva's KO of Belfort. White's favoritism holds no bounds!

There will be surprises for sure but not what GSP and his fan base have in mind! Shields for the win!!!

On another note, maybe GSP will delight his fan base by putting out a vblog of him trying on various pairs of his famous man panties!

I don't think Shields has a hope in hell in this fight; period. GSP is simply too well rounded, a fighter. If Jake manages to get Rush down, he'll simply get back up or reverse the position. No one in MMA and that includes (who I think is the best wrestler in the division, Koscheck) go get him down and keep him down.

Shields only hope in this fight is on the ground, unfortunately, he's fighting (probably) the best guy in The UFC at "not" being on his back. He's notorious for it. GSP has spent, what, a few minutes on his back, in the sum total of all his fights in The UFC. I fail to understand how Shields is going to magically accomplish that which no else has.

GSP - walking away: TKO / stoppage 2nd round.

Shields resume speaks for itself. He doesn't always make it look pretty, but he gets the W. I think Shields can get him down, and hold him down. The question is, can he finish GSP, or can he do that for all 5 rounds.

I honestly think Kos still has the best chance to beat him. GSP's footwork and distancing ability makes him very hard to take down unless you have an explosive shot like Kos. Shields lacks that type of a shot, which I believe will hurt his chances.

It doesn't have to be explosive. He uses slips and striking to get the take down. He doesn't shoot from outside punching range. How often do you see Shields get stuffed?

Alot. Paul Daley who has poor TD defense stuffed a few of his shots until he finally got the clicnh and a takdown from there. GSPs footwork, kicks, reach, and ability to distance himself will make it hard for Shields to grab a hold of him. I question GSPs ground game especially off his back, but we will see.

Paul Daley does not have poor take down defence. He just sucks once he gets taken down. He only looked like he had poor takedown defence against Kos because Kos has the right kind of takedowns for Paul. Shields takes most of his opponents down at will.

I'd like to see Jake fight a 205 Hendo. His natural weight class. He has said countless times that he isn't the same at 185. And that's Jakes downfall in this fight; he bounces around his weight too much, throwing his body out. And Hendo hasn't been impressive since his Pride days, so saying he has grappling this, olympic that doesn't help convince me any. Rampage out wrestled Hendo in their match in the UFC.

GSP will take it where he wants to go in the ring and be dominant. I can guarantee you GSP is physically stronger than Jake and strength mixed with grappling is a lethal combination.

But it's MMA. Jake can come in and knock GSP out cold with a jab or GSP can come in and do a flying heel hook on Jake. You just never know.

Jake Shields does not even deserve this fight since he lost to Kampmann but the judges were fixed. His cardio could play a big factor into the later rounds as he was visibly gassed against Kampmann at the end of round 2 and we all know GSP can go 5 rounds and some.

GSP should destroy Shields IMO. Their wrestling is probably pretty close, but GSP's stand up game is light years ahead of Shields. I would not be least bit surprised to see another fractured eye socket. Shields does have a chance if GSP makes a mistake on the ground, but that is about his only chance whereas GSP has far more factors in his favour in this fight.
