Georges St. Pierre on Jake Shields: I want to fight the best, and he is the best right now

UFC Welterwieght Champion, Goerges "Rush" St. Pierre, praised the Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields by stating that he considers him as one of the best fighters in the World right now. GSP talked to Joe Ferraro about who he considers to be the biggest threat to his reign as the UFC Welterweight Champion:

"Jake Shields is a great submission fighter", St-Pierre said. "He's got great technique and takedowns, […] Shields is amazing. He's of course the guy to beat right now.

He's fighting at 185 lbs right now, and he's dominating and beating everyone at 185, and he's a natural 170 lbs fighter. He's not only an amazing fighter, he's an amazing jiu-jitsu fighter. I am a proud Champion, and as a proud Champion I want to fight the best, Jake Shields is the best right now."

St. Pierre's future opponent is still unknown, but if Jake Shields decides to sign for the UFC he will probably get an immediate shot at the French-Canadian. Georges St. Pierre has successfully defended his title for four times, since winning it against Matt Serra at UFC 83 in Montreal, Canada.

Aweome. Horrible matchup for shields though, because he wont be able to take GSP down, and if he does, GSP is a solid jiu jitsu blackbelt, dominating other jiu jitsu blackbelts in mma in pure grappling.

This will be a great opportunity for GSP to showcase his standup. Finally he isnt facing a striker, so keeping it standing against shields will "sweep all the udds" (as GSP would out it) to his side. If you see it as a "mathematical problem" :)

i still think he will end up on top of shields for 15+ minutes of the fight as if you take someone down, no chance of them taking you down and shields did handle hendo's olympic wrestling

Sheilds hopes for that though, subs are his specialty.

GSP would be better off keeping it on the feet same as Hendo.

I wouldnt ignore Sheils abilities. All it takes is GSP going for G$N pound to lose the fight, and he has some nasty guillotines(lawlor for instance)

He just nullified Hendo's wrestling for round after round, it was good experience for Sheilds for sure.

If his striking improves, he'll be tough as hell.

Hendo's wrestling game has not evolved at all. That was obvious in the Shields fight. Good wrestlers can neutralize a BJJ game and Hendo completely failed in that respect. He relies too much on that haymaker of a right hand. I think GSP is more explosive than Shields. His take downs are more powerful. However we now know that Shields can take punch. Can GSP hit as hard as Hendo? I personally think this would end up being a chess match on the ground. Shields cant bang all that well, but he is very durable. GSP has never knocked anyone out but can wrestle like a sonuvabitch. I'd but that fight.

I more or less agree with you there, GSP would probably spend the first round on the ground and take him down a couple more times after that just to get Shields focussed on the takedowns so he can open up more on his feet - that being said if GSP is having great success on the ground (as he always does), he might just keep the fight there to ensure the win even though he could outstrike shields

I like this match up although GSP has a pronounced advantage in the stand up. On the ground it is pretty even and I definitely think that Shields can get it there at least once. I think that on the ground this fight goes to whoever gets dominant position.

Hendo was a Greco wrestler. Once on the ground he's a lame duck. Getting GSP down will be hard... keeping him down will be even harder. And although GSP doesn't have the knockout power Hendo has, he has way better accuracy. I think Hendo just got excited and blew his wad trying to finish Jake off. GSP does not gas, and would probably have the sense to throw a submission on a stunned Shields rather than try to punch a well covered head. This one is going to GSP, even if it is via 25 minutes of ground and sort of pound.

I think GSP sees this as an opportunity to make a fight exciting for the fans by keeping it standing and getting a TKO victory. I don't think it will be as easy as all that but that is what I think GSP is considering.

GSP is calling out Jake because he knows and everyone else knows that this would be an easy fight. GSP would out power Jake. " I am not impressed" with GSP calling out Jake instead of stepping up to the real challenge being Anderson Silva. Jake is the best right now? You are not fooling us GSP. You are.....now step up!

This actually would be a good match up for Shields. His Jiu-Jitsu is definitely more technical but the Wrestling I have to give it to St. Pierre.

The way to beat St. Pierre is #1 stop the take-down and counter with kicks and jabs and get the take-down and ground and pound.

This will be a huge mistake for Shields, he has no chance against GSP and would only change organization to lose and become a mid range fighter in the UFC.

Also I have to say this is a dangerous road for the UFC, if they start giving Strikeforce champs immediate title shots it gives a lot of creditability to Strikeforce, and in truth it would be an easier road to a title shot then joining the UFC:

Maybe the only reason GSP is calling out Shields is that Shields has not shown any sign of leaving StrikeForce and Dana wants to get the rumor mill going.

Hi mma hardcore fan's. I called the sheilds vs henderson. I told everyone dont underestimate sheilds. And they all did.if shields had more power he would have punched hendo's face into the ground.hendo should thank God for that he doesnt.Gsp is more versatile hands down.more explosive takedowns sweet stand up. but he will get beat by sheilds because will bring him down to the mat and thats a rap lay and pray snooze fest.

Shields was lookin mighty chummy with Dana last night at the fight so i believe its gunna happen. And shields might have gotten rocked in the first but he still controled Dan who is an excceptional wrestler dispite his age. Plus he cudnt even finish Hendo so thats sayin something if he wants to try and finish GSP.
