Georges St. Pierre: I'm not afraid to go to the ground with Jake Shields
Posted on April 5, 2011, 03:18 AM by Joey SantosusWelterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre, who will put his title on the line when he meets Jake Shields at UFC 129, discusses his opponent, as well as his gameplan for the bout. St. Pierre considers Shields the best jiu-jitsu practitioner in the promotion, but insists he is not afraid to go to the ground with him. "GSP" also talks about the Cesar Gracie trained fighter's impressive win streak, and though he considers Shields "the guy to beat," he says fighting for the UFC title is a different game.
UFC 129 is set to take place April 30th from the sold-out Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Welterweight title clash between St. Pierre and Shields will headline, while Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo will make his promotional debut against Mark Hominick in the co-main event.

he is not afraid, but he will play it safe and fight shields only in the stand up and maybe a takedown to the end of the round to make points
shields dominated hendo for 4 rounds on the ground and he is a great submission fighter, but i cant see him winning this fight. gsp is to fast
i was looking at both there last 3 fights too and shields is just as impressive if not more so.
Shields: kampmann , hendo@185 , miller@185
G.S.P: Koscheck, Hardy, Alvez all@170
Shields didnt even beat Kampmann IMO.
Miller held is own in the first 3 rounds from what I recall, dont remember the last 2.... but GSP is much much too skilled for Jake Shields. GSP is going to finish Shields in Rd.3 or Rd. 4.
I think / hope that the difference with GSP and Shield's ground game is that GSP is going to use his BJJ after he has rung Shield's bell a few times.
Jake gt saved by the bell with Jason, Hendo.....whatever, and i agree AZZ i dnt think he beat Martin. but all gsp has is a boxing highlight reel with KOS and two lay n prays wid hardy and alves.im still oging to pull for gsp cause gsp has shown he can take a man down and keep him there, and even thought his stand up hasnt been shown lately i still kno its there. so GSP has the tools to beat shields.
GSP has never KO'd anybody. He's got good striking that sets up TKO's, but never a power KO striker, idk what HLs ur watching. Jake is a big guy, i think it'll be hard for GSP to lay on him, so he's probably going to keep it standing and setup a TKO, i like 3rd or 4th.
You know, GSP might get a KO if he threw a Hendo like punch but he is rigidly adherant to the technical striking of his "Martial Arts". He doesn't have a roundhouse punch in his armamentarium.
he when he said "KOS" he meant koscheck not K.O.
gsp will hold any fighter down on the ground
I don't think that is fair to say about Koscheck. He wrestles a puncher and punches a wrestler. Isn't that smart?
Georges St. Pierre is training with the best submission fighter the planet earth has ever seen in MMA History.
Roger Gracie is insanely better than Jake Shields in Jiu-Jitsu, he's submitted the best in the world within minutes and seconds, multiple times, like it's nothing.
I agree Jake Shields is a very good fighter, but when you pair, the training of Roger Gracie with the training with Freddie Roach... Jake Shields doesn't have a shot in hell. He has NO CLUE about the beating that GSP will put on him.
GSP will do whatever he wants to Jake Shields, while preventing absolutely anything Jake tries on him.
This will be a really ugly fight for Jake... I'm talking Koscheck times 10. GSP could win by TKO easily here. Hell he could submit Jake if the opportunity presented itself.
GSP via Massacre, with whatever he wants.
If you include Georges godlike learning capabilities to the training he is receiving, you can only imagine the devastation that Jake is going to get. I bet he has shocked Roger with his control and probably even submitted him once behind the scenes.
Hendo just hasn't been the same for some time. Sure he can lay someone out, but I feel his heart isn't it in and he is solely relying on his H-bomb to end fights. I wasn't impressed by Jakes performance (lol) against a drained Dan. So people saying he dominated him, sure, just like GSP dominated Penn. **** around with your weight and it does things to you. Like Jakes fight with Kampmann.
GSP by some form of stoppage.
GSP is too quick and fast for JS... utilizing jab technique and take down GNP the same way he did to Kosh
Well according to the gsp phillosophy hes has got to keep it standing "fight my opponent where hes weakest"
Its not about being afraid its being smart, shields has some of the best sweeps out there and when hes in the dominant position is almost impossible to shake him, the only criticism is that his jiu jitsu is rudamentary ala nogueiras so its easy to know what he is going for thats why he hasnt got a higher percentage finish i think.
Yeah i agree, even if shields is one of the best grapplers, he aint that slick, and pretty predictable
but hes good at what he does which is positioning
Georgie isn't afraid to go to the ground with ANY man!
I bet you Georgie has a cute lil color coordinated outfit pick out already for the event.
gsp can handle this whereever is goes
LOL at GSP saying Shields has the best JJ in the UFC. I think whoever gets the take downs will win this fight. It's going to the mat no matter what.
Not necessarily Mamba. GSP knows shields one and only gameplan. And as good as shields is with it, I am pretty sure GSP will have a gameplan just for Shields as he does for every other opponent. If Shields turns up like he did against Kampmann he will get whooped bad style.
if gsp doesnt finish sheilds than hel never finish anyone. ya sheilds is tough, but everyone whos fighting for the title is tough. the advantage on the feet for gsp is so great i will seriously be disappointed if gsp doesnt tko sheilds.
Hendo and the H-bomb didn't stop Shields.
Now GSP has Joe Rogan's reverse kick.
I don't think Shields BJJ is overrated. I actually think it's really good. He hasn't been submitted how long. What do you consider good BJJ when someone only submits that person or do you look at how they transition or how they set up a sweep from the bottom etc... George will tire him out and submit him though because I don't see Shields keeping up with George for all of 5 rounds.
I dont think there has ever been a fighter with GSP's ability to control the pace and position of a fight... pound for poung king or not he has dictated the style of every fight he's been in since the serra surprise. And although the most decorated i dont think Shields wrestling is anything worse than guys he's fought in the past... remember the fitch fight?! I'd love to see GSP defend his belt but its bittersweet cos I have no desire to see him figh Anderson who can naturally make 205lb... anyone agree?
