Georges St. Pierre broke Josh Koscheck's Orbital Bone at UFC 124
Posted on December 13, 2010, 09:56 AM by Anton GurevichESPN's Josh Gross reports that Josh Koscheck suffered from a broken Orbital Bone, following the UFC 124 main event bout against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 124 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The French-Canadian dominated Koscheck, doing most if his damage with jabs. Koscheck's eye began to swell between the first and the second rounds, as the doctor almost stopped the fight after Round 3. Broken Orbital Bone usually requires a long recovery, in the region of 6 to 9 months out of action.
Koscheck (15-5) was released from a Montreal-area hospital Sunday afternoon, according to his trainer, Bob Cook. He cannot fly home to San Jose, Calif., because an air pocket formed behind the broken orbital bone, making air travel dangerous. UFC officials arranged for Koscheck and Cook to drive Sunday afternoon from Montreal to Boston, where the 33-year-old fighter is expected to undergo surgery Monday or Tuesday.
"We're going to have a much better sense of the injury when we get to the States," Cook said. "We'll get it checked down there. Hopefully he can have the surgery there and head home as soon as possible."

you suck
damn best wishes to you kos cant wait to see you get back on track
Ever get that feeling that nobody likes you?
There were a lot of jabs to that eye. Showed a lot of heart staying in the fight though
i have to disagree with 'it showed a lot of heart to stay in there' these guys like to be thought of as wariors, the toughest guys out there, its a fightwrs dream to get to the ufc and its their full time job and one that pays them well and you think it showed heart, come on.
i agree man, koscheks a tough guy but GSP simply outclassed him in every aspect so badly. I could understand people saying Koschek had hard if GSP had knocked him down several times, and put on an absolute beating but it was a showcase of sheer class from GSP. his movement and combinations were the best theyv ever been and koschek reaised his looping right hand was never going to connect and ran out of ideas. Dan Hardy showed more heart than koschek battling through the arm bar and kimura attempts. In my eyes GSP showed why he is P4P king on this website and shood be on every other site.
Man that was the old GSP. He came out guns a blazing. I think it was a awsome fight. Props to KOS for hanging 3 more rounds after the eye incident.
@ crocopcullen Basically what you are saying is that you have to suck to show heart and that because Koscheck did relatively well against GSP as compared to others like Fitch, Hardy and Alves he didn't show heart? Come on man that doesn't make sense. To stay in there and continue to take punches to a broken orbital bone, shows tremendous heart.
I'm a big GSP fan and I agree with almost every thing you said except "outclassed him in every aspect so badly". I didn't think GSP did as well as I expected in take downs and wrestling. I would have loved to have seen him breeze through those take down attempts. I'm also happy the fight stayed on the feet but Kos did defend the take down well.
yeah fair point man. just wouldv liked to see koschek take the fight to GSP like he promised to. You could hear his coaches telling him to let it all go in the 4th and 5th, but yeah man your right he did show heart. i just let my dislike for the guy take over when writing the comment, my bad lol
umm u want to talk about heart, watch gsp vs fitch again. That was heart.
Yeah that was heart, Kos Vs GSP was heart too......not like they cant be both heart.
Lotta heart going around.lol. I heart you.
First of all I agree that he was outclassed by GSP but for yu guys to say he has no heart you guys are just crazy. How about you let a guy break yur orbital then have you'd eye punched for 20 minutes and see how you feel
You probably have not had a broken orbital.....just a guess.
He could have gotten out of the fight, lost by TKO, and been payed the same as for losing a decision. The guy stayed in the fight with a broken orbital bone. If you don't think he showed heart, you are just a hater.
@jizzle. i didnt say he has NO heart, i just dis-agreed with the point being made about him showing heart by staying in there and lasting the fight. It wasnt amazing, yes he was injured and had pain but again i say, these guys claim to be warriors, they are known for toughness and if everyone gave up as soon as they were injured they wouldnt have a career in the sport. did you really expect any less from a guy in the ufc and fighting for the belt?
I'm sure there are guys that wouldn't stay in there. That is a lot of pain we're talking about here, did you see him when his cornerman was trying to put ice on his eye? He looked like he was in a lot of pain. So yeah I'm willing to bet you there are guys that wouldn't stay in there.
@and to those fighters who dont stay in there, ill say, you have no heart. lol.
well then save it for those guys.
That sucks. I am no Koscheck fan but an injury requiring that much down time just sucks. We have the best doctors in the world here in MA. I hope they get you fixed up and on to a quick recovery Kos.
Maybe you can hug his nuts some more and make him feel better....
lollll
@Ichokepeople, I agree man, especially when ur way of living is by fighting n he can't fight for like 9 month but im sure that 100k FOTN bonus helps ease the pain a bit
Yeah, I'm a huge nut hugger.
Cool. How did you get all the best doctors in the world to come on MA?
That was supposed to be a response to neverbeeninthecagerage64. Fail
thank goodness they didn't attempt to fly him out of there ASAP...could've ended ...TERRIBLE
I'm sure the extra 100k made him feel a bit better about everything....
GSP is on another level!
He's a First rate fighter
Koscheck might just be a 2nd rate fighter maybe just 3rd rate
nah Kos is a first rate fighter, GSP even better than that
@theshark
well said GSP is something special Alves, Fitch and Kos are actually world class but GSP manages to make them look average
Yeah, GSP is on the same level with Chuck Norris.
okay now cool down, the only guy that comes close to chuck norris is captain james t frikin kirk!
man. guess joe rogan's comment after seeing that swelling left eye was right.
he sayed some bad thing.. and he got his ass kicked...
but now give him some credit for staying in the fight
for 5 round with a broken orbital!!!
we are not on the street! and i wish nobody to get injured badly!!!
Holy s**t the power of a jab
or luck of head movement by Cos
Yeah, unluckily Kos moved his head onto GSP's jab 55* times.

Let me rephrase that: "lack of correct head movement " is what I meant.
Kos couldn't keep his hands up for fear of a take down. Towards the end of the fight you could see it was really bothering him when he'd put his hand over it.
Let me start by saying I'm Canadian. But to me it seemed as if the French Canadians took serious offence to what Koscheck said, I have a few french canadian buddies on facebook and they all hated koscheck then a few other non french canadians who wanted koscheck to win. I think koscheck really only insulted Quebec, not all of Canada
No one likes the French Canadians to include the Canadians.
I'm Canadian too and I'd agree with you except your name is p4pfedor
What?
"French Canada is the only Canada. It's the best Canada in all the land!"
Seriously though, how can you hate French Canada? Have you ever been to Montreal? Not only is it one of the most laid back places in the world but there are like three hot chicks (and one ugly one) to every guy!
I'm not a Koscheck fan at all and was hoping George would put a beat down on him.
At the same time I didn't want the guy to be hurt, especially with something that will keep him out of action for potentially a year. I hope he recovers quick so he can get back to making a living.
Don't worry, no one else in MMA has a jab. It is the most under-utilized weapon in MMA (next to brass knuckles in the trunks).
Then the fight should have been stopped. If that is the case, then the doctor and even his corner, failed Koscheck; regardless of his heart and determination to continue on. W
You knew it was bad when we saw him wincing at the application of that ice bag, to his eye; ouch! How this guy was allowed to continue, is beyond me. What if Rush had damaged the guys eye to the point of ending his career or even losing sight in that eye, all together?
It was a great fight and I'm thrilled with the outcome, but I'm not looking to see this fighter or any fighter, damaged to the point of (a) life altering injury. I think, in this instance, there might be cause for review of the doctor's actions or lack-there-of and maybe even the corner and ref, if they have a say, in determining whether or not Koscheck should have been prevented from continuing on.
In retrospect, maybe GSP really did stop him, but the doctor (and perhaps others) failed in his (their) primary job; which is to protect the fighter.
yes.. exactly!! they should sharpen the rules in some way i think!?
the stopped the bonnar fight 2 min to the end for example.. and that was "only" a cut.. so they had to stop this too!!
Brock broke Heaths orbital bone 5 seconds into the fight and he pushed through to the end...Funny thing tho, havn't seen Heath fight since then, and that was not even a title fight. Then you see Bob Sapp and Brandon Verra get brocken orbitals and they cower away and the fight gets stopped. Maybe it just has to do with the severity of the break, but I'm sure the doctor said that in his medical opinion the fight should be stopped, but since it was a title fight and Kos wanted to continue he let it slide. Kos may never get that shot again, so it is admirable that he would continue at all Kos knowing there is still a slight chance he could catch GSP and get the belt. But when the injury becomes life altering is where the line should be drawn.
Agreed! The doctors should never ask the fighters if they want to continue. It's up to the doctors to protect the health and wellbeing of the fighters. The fighter should have no say in the matter.
that wouldn't be gsp stopping kos just doctors stopping gsp.
yes.. so they take the pride thing away from the fighters!!
and nobodey is a quitter but the safety is ensured!
You have to get input from the fighter. What if Kos said, yes, I want to stop. What if he said I can't see. You have to ask the fighter because he has valuable info. Also, the doc doesn't have X-ray vision.
Can you name one bad outcome of fighting with a broken orbit? I can't think of one. In most cases the treatment is simply time to heal and pain meds if needed. Don't blow it out of proportion.
WTF?? sure the fighter can stop the fight..!! but to continue the fight in a moment like this the doc should have the last word...
You can't think a possible bad outcome for keep fighting with a broken orbital???
How about expansion of the damage into the eye-socket area and vision impairment for life?
It's all part of being a fighter. No need to feel sorry for Koscheck, he is making a fine living off of his fighting career, and every time you step in the cage, you risk serious injury. He was simply beat down by the superior fighter. Let's hope he recovers quickly and gets back in the cage soon, whether you love him or hate him.
Glad GSP smashed this guy.....Koshcheck....whose the bitch now?? I know Daley gona be loving this lol
where's that silly guy who said koscheck will shock us and KO GSP haha
oh my heart goes out to him, I still think he's not a bad guy, he's just a good promoter. I can't imagine this fight getting so much attention if Koscheck would be as polite and likeable as GSP is, right?
So props for being the martyr for UFC popularity.
I actually thought there was that chance and I am not afraid to admit it. But Kos barely mixed anything in this fight. He has done better than this last fight and the early eye injury was probably the real reason for kos having a lackluster performance. I was just thinking that it was unlikely that GSP was going to finish him but I never thought Kos would have the eye problem otherwise I was wondering if he would connect the right hand. But without his one eye he had no depth perception and was always like a foot away from gsps chin or head for that matter. That eye injury messed evverything up for him and that was good for GSP.
GSP is THE MAN!!!!!!!
I heard he had a male nurse fix that eye up for him.
wow GSP made one of Josh's eye's Japanese!
