Gary Shaw: Kimbo Slice should have fought James Toney; Says Dana White is unloyal

Former Elite XC key man Gary Shaw discussed the latest events in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, especially the cut of Kimbo Slice from the promotion. Shaw introduced Kimbo to the world of Mixed Martial Arts, matching-up the Bahamas native against Bo Cantrell at EliteXC: Renegade.

Shaw stated that UFC did a wrong choice by releasing Kimbo, who he considers a huge draw in the sport. Shaw also revealed that he would match-up Kimbo Slice against James Toney, and not against the relatively well-rounded Matt Mitrione. Speaking about Toney, Shaw thinks that "Lights Out" will lose to Randy Couture at UFC 118, due to his "advanced" age and the lack of time to fully learn all the different aspects of MMA.

Sounds like Shaw is missing Dana's point thou, he wants Toney to lose so he can cut him from the UFC, its pretty obvious Dana regrets signing him.

sounds like a pretty smart & reasonable guy to me. If you expect loyal fighters u need to be loyal to them. I think Matt is a top level athlete and was a very bad match for kimbo. Kimbo went 1-1 in his UFC run and they cut him, but they let Al Turk lose 3 in a row before they cut him? WTF ?

Kimbo did not show any defence against leg kicks or when on his back, his punches are mediocre ( in the ufc ) and his stamina sucks.

Thats what he showed against mitrione, he didn't just lose.

Gary Shaw is the ****ing boxing promoter who paid seth petruzelli extra money to stand up with kimbo slice, and should be investigated for it. He is a serious threat to mma becoming mainstream, and has done his best trying to make it into a freakshow with the catastrophy called Elite XC. The guys who voted "cool" on this post should be ashamed of themselves.

Gary, dont give dana white ANY tips on how to run the UFC, stay in boxing or shut the **** up.

ok gary, firstly, you giving dana white advice on running his company is like me giving bill gates advice on where microsoft should go next.

secondly, without a shadow of a doubt, toney would brutally, brutally destroy kimbo, no doubt about it.

finally, obviously you dint watch kimbo's fight against mitrione, otherwise you would see why dana dropped him

You mean the way Kimbo controlled the first round and then got owned in the second?

I think "lights out" would have been just as bad a match up for Kimbo as Matt was though. (maybe even worse) I say Kimbo vs "The Grimm"

    Whose with me?

I think Kimbo can be a very legit heavyweight, if his knee wasn't such a problem.

Kimbo's arthritis is a mayjor problem in his carreer.

I hope Kimbo comes to his sences and get that fixed up.

If their even surgery for that??

but theres the problem, his knee IS a problem and its crippling him....whoever he fights will aim for that leg and hell crumple theres no escaping it....he was offered a special shot that would help his knee on tuf 10 but he refused it cos he said it would affect him in later life (i dont know exactly how much good it would do but he refused it anyway)

if they offered him a cortisone shot for inflammation, he was wise to turn it down. Any doctor who knows what they are doing will say its likely to cause arthritis in that joint later in life.

Kimbo already has enough problems with arthritis.

The fact of the matter is Kimbo cant compete with what the UFC has to offer. Hes too one dimensional and though he is improving he just got into the sport too late. I see him fighting again somewhere but his age and lack of experience is what hurts him.

gary, there's a difference between a freakshow and and MMA event. Kimbo is not a Mixed martial artist, Randy is. what are you going to recommend next? that dana should pay extra money to coture if he stands up with toney?

it's funny how that was taken out of context and made to look crooked. first of all, dana should award bonuses to fighters who finish by ko or sub instead of giving them win bonuses. and i'm not talking ko of the night, 1 ko bonus isn't enough. and look at what is happening now, ufc fighters are officially fighting 'safe' to earn BIG bonuses and the fans are booing. I don't blame gary for offering a ko bonus cause he's trying to give us, the fans what we want to see. dana says this and that about gary and people think he's a crook.

i enjoyed elite xc and was crazy about the idea of mma on showtime. and i still am. i can go on and on about how ridiculous ufc's ppv schedule has become. gary shaw is the real dana white.

And I totaly agree with you. Gary Shaw was really good at what he did, but it also makes me wonder how one of the biggest mma orginizations went out of buisness in one day.

Completely agree with the 1st paragraph. I know its MMA but I think a lot of people will stop watching if wrestling keeps dominating. Its cool if it helps get a finish but I hate when they just hang on and just control for a win. A lot of people disagree with me but I know plenty of people who agree.

True say, i think all fighters who finish fights should get bonuses, but the fact that this guy payed a fighter more money to stand with sombody and not try to take theme down? well my friend thats not mma, thats streetfighting.

Shaw was already hurting financially, he was paying out too much money and not bringing enough in. He was skating on thin ice and promoted Kimbo as the best MMA fighter ever and thought Seth would be an easy win for Kimbo to keep his money train rolling.

Well Seth KO's Kimbo in the first 15 seconds and Gary Shaw freaks out on tv and starts screaming and yelling.

Seth is the most dangerous fighter in MMA. He KO'd Kimbo and EliteXc in one punch hahaha

I agree - Kimbo was cut too early.

Kimbo had no business in the HW division; he's just not big enough and doesn't have the chops. However, Kimbo might have fared well hanging in the LHW; he certainly would have been more viable; take a look at what he did to Houston Alexander. He certainly would not have been the worst fighter or easiest fight @ 205.

The only caveat that I append to this is in regard to Kimbo's knee. I know he had issues and I'm not sure that they've ever been properly addressed. If the knee is bad and he doesn't want to get it fixed or it can't be, then fair enough, let him go. However, if that is not the case, then I think he should have been kept.

And Shaw is certainly correct on one thing - Kimbo is a draw. I hope he ends up in Strikeforce (at least). I just hope he is healthy enough to continue to keep fighting if he wishes; he's a nice guy.

Lets take buisness advise from a loser like Gary Shaw. Kimbo already cost you your entire buisness and you have the balls to tell someone else what to do with him?

    Your a joke Gary, sorry.

I agree 100%, of course you'll still try to talk up the guy you put all your eggs in the basket with and ran your business into the ground and you're going to tell the top business owner in the sport how to run his? This is the UFC which means no easy fights, if Toney wants to do MMA he better learn fast so I'm glad he was matched with a well rounded guy to open his eyes and let him know that this is a totally different ball game. This guy is a damn idiot, like Dana needs Kimbo to draw anything...people like him need to know his place

Guys should NEVER be matched by their "disadvantages." You don't give a guy only stand-up fights because that is what he is good at. Styles make fights of course, we all know this, but you match based on competitive advantages...... I dont think Kimbo should have been cut just yet, but not because of his "draw." I feel it was to soon because you cant just change things around depending on the fighter and how you feel that day, that is in fact a little disloyal. Basically tho, I respect the UFC for keeping it a competitive sport for the most part. Do they have their side-shows now and then? Yes, because its fun for the fans now and then and makes a little extra money, but you dont run your whole business based on those kind of fights. Doing so just degrades the sport and demolishes the foundation that has been such a long time in the making.

What happened to EliteXC again?... The UFC should take marketing advice from a company that gets a spot on network television, riding the UFC's coat-tails, and still can't make it?

Dana is a smart man who plays off of the pride and ambitions of these fighters. Of course he is going to set Toney up for failure...Of course he got Kimbo out of the ufc. He does not want guys like this getting any type of publicity and building fan bases via youtube....he wants people to only respect the ufc. He will draft you . . . . give you i minute of fame and then put you against someone you have no chance of beating...if you are a boxer you will face someone who has an outstanding ground game...if you are a good wrestler you will face...someone who uses a style that will override yours. if you are a youtube star...that fights....do not show all you skills online....They will be used against you .... and you will become not only a pawn...but the pawn that is sacrificed from the start.
