GSP injured; Nick Diaz vs Carlos Condit set for UFC 143 Interim Title fight

Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre has been forced to withdraw from his February 4th title defense against Nick Diaz due to an injured ACL. Stepping in to replace the champ will be top contender Carlos Condit, who will now face Diaz in a 170-pound interim title fight.

UFC President Dana White made the announcement today via Twitter.

"GSP blown acl will be out for 10 mos," White tweeted. "Now Condit vs Diaz for the interim welterweight title on Feb 4th in Las Vegas!"

Diaz (26-7) was initially set to challenge St. Pierre at UFC 137, but instead went on to defeat B.J. Penn via unanimous decision after being removed from the title bout. The victory, which extended his current winning streak to 11, was the former Strikeforce champ's first outing under the UFC banner since his submission win over Josh Neer back in 2006.

Condit (27-5) was called upon to replace Diaz when "The Stockton Bad Boy" was removed from the UFC 137 headlining bout, but was left without an opponent when St. Pierre was also forced to withdraw from that match-up due to injuries sustained while preparing for the fight. Currently riding a four-fight win streak in the UFC, Condit's only defeat since signing with the organization was a narrow split-decision loss to Martin Kampmann in his promotional debut.

Diaz vs. Condit will headline the UFC 143 fight card, set to take place February 4th from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The winner the bout will be crowned Interim Champion and will await an eventual showdown with the reigning champ, St. Pierre, upon his return.

*Waits for the army of idiots to claim that GSP is faking the injury, and that he's controlling matchups to get easy fights*

Oh, and he'd heal real quick if they offer him hardy.

He does NOT wanna fight Diaz, I really think Diaz causes him to loose sleep. I'm not saying GSP can't beat him because he may easily control the fight through repeated jabs through Diaz guard then take him down when Diaz flinches at the possible jab, but Diaz is a problem mentally, far before the fight, that why so many have avoided him.

people don't realize the longer you take off the more it hurts your career so he isn't doing this because he's scared he's taking a long ass layoff and is coming back to fight either condit or diaz

Sh*t man, i really wanted to see Diaz face off with GSP because i genuinely think Diaz has all the tools to beat him, especially in a five rounder. GSP has never been one to pull out of a fight throughout his whole career.....untill now. I'm really starting to question whether GSP is doing this knowing that Diaz would likely have to fight someone else in his absence, which would also mean that Diaz would stand a chance of losing to that replacement opponent and therefore be removed from title contention. Which would mean GSP wouldn't have to worry about facing him upon his return. It does seem to me sometimes that both GSP and AS are guilty of trying their best to protect their legacys and i genuinely think they are actually frightened of losing now having not lost for so long. The only reason i say this is that ever since Diaz has come into the WW mix, GSP, after an injury free career, has suffered back to back injuries, which will now keep him out of action for over a year. That gives Diaz time to have another 3-4 fights before he returns and my bet is that GSP and his management are thinking that Diaz will surely lose one of them, effectively most likely moving him out of GSP's path and protecting his legacy. I'm betting he will only fight Diaz if he HAS to, if he can avoid it he will. It just seems like a tactical move to me, it's too co-incidental for him to all of a sudden start suffering consecutive injuries. I may be completely wrong but only GSP himself truly knows.

Still Condit vs Diaz stands to be a great match up too, that will be a proper fight man, both guys always come to fight and put on a show. I've still got Diaz winning though. They can both take serious amounts of punishment but Diaz will outstrike him on the feet and it goes without saying that if Condit is crazy enough to take it to the floor (which he is!) he'll get schooled and then submitted. This IS going to be a great fight though for sure, i can't wait......

all this faking injury shit is retarded, these guys are getting older and have had a lot of fights it takes a toll on you ,obviously the further your career goes the more apt you are to injury, there training regiment alone is enough to wear a man down after so many years...a lot of the people on this have stupid ****ing logic behind what they say its like common sense isn't so common anymore

I only read half of your novela but here is my response. GSP has not had an injury free career. He tore his groin in the Alves fight. He also has arthritis in his elbow. Even if it had been an injury free career though, one would expect him to injure something some time. Everyone does. I do however, agree that Diaz has a very good chance of beating Georges.

@Wizdom - yeah that's a fair point, i'm not saying Condit has no ground skills but i just think Diaz is much better there. Condit has some good strikes too and good knees but what really makes this fight so exciting for me is that both guys like to be aggressive and keep pushing forward. You hardy ever see either of these guys on the back foot, especially Diaz, so hopefully they will meet in the centre and just go to war man......this has FOTN all over it for sure, this is one to look forward to.......

GSP will still more than likely end up fighting both Condit and Diaz. These three guys imo are the best three welterweights in the world. So they will all end up fighting each other within the next couple of years. For example: if Diaz beats Condit, and then beats GSP for the real title; then Condit and GSP might end up facing each other to see who the GateKeeper is gonna be. It will all eventually come full circle and we will all see that it was worth the wait. Meanwhile just sit back and enjoy the shows because the UFC has been putting some kickass fights together this past year!!

To many fans put to much emphasis on the belt. From a fan perspective the belt really doesnt mean $h1t, When was the last title fight that was as good as Guida/Henderson, Rua/Hendo, Pham/Garcia, Griffin/Bonnar, or the classic Frye/Takayama. GSP could go on to have 100 title defenses but will never have a epic war like these.
