GSP injured; Nick Diaz vs Carlos Condit set for UFC 143 Interim Title fight
Posted on December 7, 2011, 12:46 PM by Joey SantosusWelterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre has been forced to withdraw from his February 4th title defense against Nick Diaz due to an injured ACL. Stepping in to replace the champ will be top contender Carlos Condit, who will now face Diaz in a 170-pound interim title fight.
UFC President Dana White made the announcement today via Twitter.
"GSP blown acl will be out for 10 mos," White tweeted. "Now Condit vs Diaz for the interim welterweight title on Feb 4th in Las Vegas!"
Diaz (26-7) was initially set to challenge St. Pierre at UFC 137, but instead went on to defeat B.J. Penn via unanimous decision after being removed from the title bout. The victory, which extended his current winning streak to 11, was the former Strikeforce champ's first outing under the UFC banner since his submission win over Josh Neer back in 2006.
Condit (27-5) was called upon to replace Diaz when "The Stockton Bad Boy" was removed from the UFC 137 headlining bout, but was left without an opponent when St. Pierre was also forced to withdraw from that match-up due to injuries sustained while preparing for the fight. Currently riding a four-fight win streak in the UFC, Condit's only defeat since signing with the organization was a narrow split-decision loss to Martin Kampmann in his promotional debut.
Diaz vs. Condit will headline the UFC 143 fight card, set to take place February 4th from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The winner the bout will be crowned Interim Champion and will await an eventual showdown with the reigning champ, St. Pierre, upon his return.

Say what you want, GSP is boring or whatever this is a huge blow to the UFC and GSP's fans (me included)
Don't be scared, homie. Sorry had to do it.
*Waits for the army of idiots to claim that GSP is faking the injury, and that he's controlling matchups to get easy fights*
Oh, and he'd heal real quick if they offer him hardy.
April 30, 2011 was his last fight date. Oct 2012 be when he can fight again. He only fought once this year. 18 month layoff .....wtf man
ahhhhh come on! for **** sakes not again! -.-
Even tho Condit vs Diaz is one of my dream fight, Im sad that GSP vs Diaz isnt happening that was such an interesting fight, hope it happens sometimes down the road but how can u not be excited for Diaz vs Condit going at it for 5 rounds cant wait for that
sad gsp has an acl injury that shit is really hard to come back from...
Nick Diaz vs Carlos Condit is going to be the biggest LAY N PRAY SNOOZEFEST in the history of MMA, this fight is terrible and will not be exciting... at all... period
He does NOT wanna fight Diaz, I really think Diaz causes him to loose sleep. I'm not saying GSP can't beat him because he may easily control the fight through repeated jabs through Diaz guard then take him down when Diaz flinches at the possible jab, but Diaz is a problem mentally, far before the fight, that why so many have avoided him.
Really?!? Two guys who always leave everything in the cage and are exciting on the feet and the ground are going to be boring?!? If that isn't sarcasm you might be the most special person in the whole wide world.
you must be kidding, this fight will be a war, both fighters are great on the floor but prefer to stand and bang, this is going to be great fight even though I'm sad we wont see the GSP vs Diaz fight now
and if you were trying to be sarcastic then you failed
Wow you people really have your sarcasm detectors turned off today. It's so obvious hes just kidding. cmon guys.
I think GSP is probably facking the injury - you know, to try to controll the matchups.
Hey you sound like that old toothless grandpa from Team Queerest.
@ Nemesis; I don't know whether to "weak" or "funny" that. The first part was moderately lame but the second part was ROTFL hilarious.
yeah gsp is taking more time off because he's scared.
people don't realize the longer you take off the more it hurts your career so he isn't doing this because he's scared he's taking a long ass layoff and is coming back to fight either condit or diaz
WHAT?!?!?! So are you saying he's "faking" an injury so he can fight the better of the two out of Diaz and Condit who are elite fighters and take a long layoff risking ring rust? What an a**hole!
HAHAHA You really got him that time, HATEOCRACY. -________-

Condit loss to Martin kamphman split and won split over Ellenberger, and I think Diaz is taking this one via dec or 4/5 Rd TKO
That was a couple of years ago.Condit looks and is better from then. I dont see diaz stopping carlos.
I disagree with both of you. These guys are both excellent on the feet and the ground. They have slightly different but equally aggressive styles. I really don't see any way to call this. It's a coin toss.
this SUCKS.
ffs jones v rashad is off, then silva is injured now this. koscheck will probably get fitch
Can't see Koschek and Fitch fighting
kos vs alves rematch sounds better, kos vs ellenberger or kos vs diaz...all this matchups sounds good....what u all think
yeh thats sounds like a good rematch, it would be a lot different this time aorund.
ellenberger is exciting too but then who does fitch get ? shields is on a loss streak, koscheck v alves n fitch v ellenberger sounds good
Yeah its a shame but then Diaz vs Condit, i feel will be a more entertaining fight.
Hurry up George get better and get a entertaining win for once.
I used to be a big fan of his, i even named my fish GSP but now i loathe that fish and most of GSP's game.
Im not imprezzed wit your fiches swimming ability.
Injured again so unfortunate for George although im not a big fan still sucks to hear
this is one of my dream matchups! yes!!!! sucks for gsp tho.
Wow. Poor Condit, having to go through this. Epic matchup though.
Horrible thing to happen to a great champion.
You know, I've stopped responding to most of the stupid crap that people post on this site about the greatest welterweight to ever fight in MMA...
But if you don't think this is a major loss to the MMA world, or a source for humor, no one needs to wonder if you're a moron, it's been confirmed.
....A source for humour?
Troll
I hear Nick had to order new sheet rock for his house after hearing the news and none of his training partners showed up to spar lol
SUUUUUUUUUUXXXX and RULESSSSS at the same time !!!!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS and new champ NICK DIAZ!!! then gsp vs nick for TUF coaches!
WTF? Condit's head must be spinning.....Fight this guy, no, now you are fighting this guy, um, no, now fight this other guy. Title fight, no title fight, back to title fight. Holy crap.
I actaully like this better, Condit and Diaz duke it out, winner gets the man himself, GSP. I got Condit all the way.....
Now KOS can go fight his whiny boyfriend Fitch. They can nuthug for 3 rounds.
I think this makes for a much better and more exciting fight anyways Poor GSP bt glad it worked out this way
GSP broke a nail again
Josh Koscheck vs. Matt Serra?
It would be so awesome if Serra KOd Kos with the first punch of the fight. I would replay that a billion times.
Sh*t man, i really wanted to see Diaz face off with GSP because i genuinely think Diaz has all the tools to beat him, especially in a five rounder. GSP has never been one to pull out of a fight throughout his whole career.....untill now. I'm really starting to question whether GSP is doing this knowing that Diaz would likely have to fight someone else in his absence, which would also mean that Diaz would stand a chance of losing to that replacement opponent and therefore be removed from title contention. Which would mean GSP wouldn't have to worry about facing him upon his return. It does seem to me sometimes that both GSP and AS are guilty of trying their best to protect their legacys and i genuinely think they are actually frightened of losing now having not lost for so long. The only reason i say this is that ever since Diaz has come into the WW mix, GSP, after an injury free career, has suffered back to back injuries, which will now keep him out of action for over a year. That gives Diaz time to have another 3-4 fights before he returns and my bet is that GSP and his management are thinking that Diaz will surely lose one of them, effectively most likely moving him out of GSP's path and protecting his legacy. I'm betting he will only fight Diaz if he HAS to, if he can avoid it he will. It just seems like a tactical move to me, it's too co-incidental for him to all of a sudden start suffering consecutive injuries. I may be completely wrong but only GSP himself truly knows.
Still Condit vs Diaz stands to be a great match up too, that will be a proper fight man, both guys always come to fight and put on a show. I've still got Diaz winning though. They can both take serious amounts of punishment but Diaz will outstrike him on the feet and it goes without saying that if Condit is crazy enough to take it to the floor (which he is!) he'll get schooled and then submitted. This IS going to be a great fight though for sure, i can't wait......
all this faking injury shit is retarded, these guys are getting older and have had a lot of fights it takes a toll on you ,obviously the further your career goes the more apt you are to injury, there training regiment alone is enough to wear a man down after so many years...a lot of the people on this have stupid ****ing logic behind what they say its like common sense isn't so common anymore
I only read half of your novela but here is my response. GSP has not had an injury free career. He tore his groin in the Alves fight. He also has arthritis in his elbow. Even if it had been an injury free career though, one would expect him to injure something some time. Everyone does. I do however, agree that Diaz has a very good chance of beating Georges.
this is going to be a great match up I like condit he can strike and roll with Diaz no doubt
Nick should win this pretty easily. I don't see condit having better stand up, or groundwork. Will be exciting but one sided.
Condit won't be easy... Diaz by submission though.
GSP must have blown his knee out signing autographs for rush fit ?
@Wizdom - yeah that's a fair point, i'm not saying Condit has no ground skills but i just think Diaz is much better there. Condit has some good strikes too and good knees but what really makes this fight so exciting for me is that both guys like to be aggressive and keep pushing forward. You hardy ever see either of these guys on the back foot, especially Diaz, so hopefully they will meet in the centre and just go to war man......this has FOTN all over it for sure, this is one to look forward to.......
diaz fanboys saying that gsp is ducking diaz should have a surgery to remove the idiocy out of their head. GSP would sit out for 10 months, cause of diaz? LMAO
Im pretty sure a blown ACL stops that crap. At least I hope so, because Im tired of seeing guys cry about what others type.
By the way, any man who uses the term "fanboys" must be a homo
Only if he spells it "fanbois".
@BigNog22 - What? do you know him personally then? maybe you could have a chat with him and get him to sign one of my t shirts.......and how do you know who Diaz fanboys are? you certainly know a lot of shit man, with them skillz you should be a millionaire........
How can u duck someone when ur injured for 10 months, LMAO. U gonna tell your doctor to fake your injury, cause you wanna sit out for 10 months, without getting pay and without being active really? think before posting retarded comments.
The good new is that we will have a new "champ". I mean, even if it's interim, that'll change the welterweight division a lil bit no?
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN.......
This is gonna be a great fight, but holy sh*t this drama is crazy!
Can't wait for this new match. Condit will come to bang with Diaz. GSP is gonna have a tough time beating either one of these guys after an 18 month layoff. Good luck George. I think his days as WW Champ are definately numbered now if they weren't before this.
Agreed, it's a fact that after such a long layoff GSP is gonna have a hard time fighting. Ring rust is real, especially on the mental faculty.
Alright, GSP is hurt.. happens, these guys are human.. and they push themselves to their limits, injuries are expected.
However this will be a great fight. I like both of these fighters, still going to be an exciting fight!
I was hoping both Nick and carlos would get to fight him but now only one will likely get to, that sucks. GSP is great but this is definetly in his favor.
well I thing this a good match up,War Natural Born Killa!!!!!
GSP will still more than likely end up fighting both Condit and Diaz. These three guys imo are the best three welterweights in the world. So they will all end up fighting each other within the next couple of years. For example: if Diaz beats Condit, and then beats GSP for the real title; then Condit and GSP might end up facing each other to see who the GateKeeper is gonna be. It will all eventually come full circle and we will all see that it was worth the wait. Meanwhile just sit back and enjoy the shows because the UFC has been putting some kickass fights together this past year!!
****!!!
good news for condit and diaz but sucks for gsp, gsp must have been training to actually finish a fight if he got injured that badly
To many fans put to much emphasis on the belt. From a fan perspective the belt really doesnt mean $h1t, When was the last title fight that was as good as Guida/Henderson, Rua/Hendo, Pham/Garcia, Griffin/Bonnar, or the classic Frye/Takayama. GSP could go on to have 100 title defenses but will never have a epic war like these.
That's because GSP is TOO good to fight like that.
PS:And opinions like yours originate from fans putting too much emphasis on brutality and none on skill.
Actually I think it's when they use all their skill rather than use only 1 skill to win.
I think Condit has a good chance on the feet for the first three rounds..
Who cares about GSP at the moment; his fight with either of these guys will be boring, Condit vs Diaz has fight of the night written all over it. I am super stoked for this fight, both have incredible chins and similar styles and strengths. Fight Of The Year!
