UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St.Pierre was snubbed again at this years ESPN ESPY awards.   This was GSP second ESPY nomination in the category of Best Fighter the first was in 2008, however GSP was beat out by boxing star Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

In 2009 Anderson “The Spider” Silva, and Lyoto “The Dragon Machida” were nominated for best fighter but ended up losing out to boxing once again the award went to Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao.

Which leaves us with GSP’s second nomination for the best fighter category, would he finally be recognized for his accomplishments, hard work, dedication to his craft? NO! History would repeat its self as the award went to Floyd Mayweather again.

Although MMA has been crushing boxing in PPV’s and boxing being on the decline with MMA on the rise in popularity it appears the voters for these awards still don’t acknowledge the athletes that reside in MMA or refuse to acknowledge MMA as an equal sport with boxing or any other sport as well.

Frankie “The Answer” Edgar was also nominated for an ESPY for the category of best upset for his win over BJ “The Prodigy” Penn at UFC 112.  He is the first mixed martial artist to be nominated outside of the best fighter category.  He was beat out by NCAA Basketball Iowa over Kansas, The University of Hawaii Softball team over Alabama, and 110th ranked Y.E. Yang victory in the 2009 PGA Tour Championship.

In my opinion especially Edgar's nomination competition, embarrassing, and blatant disrespect towards the MMA community. Edgar taking a back seat to college team upsets where the roster is completely overhauled every four year, and it’s not even the same players defending their NCAA ranked status.  Penn and Edgar dedicated their careers to get where there at, and establish their rankings.  If anything it shows the world is slow to except change, and slow to except MMA as a professional and legitimate sport.

GSP probably isnt too upset, he didnt even know what the ESPY's were lol and I don't think Edgar got snubbed, that was a massive upset Iowa beating Kansas and just b/c they're college players doesn't take anything away from that.

Maybe i got a lil upset in my rant. Some of those upsets were deserving, I just get frustrated by the constant mma bashing on espn then having gsp losing twice to mayweather set me off. I understand 2007 mayweather fought oscar, but this seriously he beat up some bums compared to what we could of had for him. No offense mosley, and marquez

The Kansas upset was definitely the biggest upset. KU was the overall number one seed. It would be like if BJ got beat by someone outside of the top ten and you never heard of him.

Who cares? MMA is in a world that is independent of and superior to the mainstream world of ESPN. It is the fastest rising sport in the world and they don't get it... and never will. Boxing will be irrelevant in a few short years and ESPN will still sideline it. He was beat out by a PGA upset. ESPN is irrelevant. MMA has risen without them and will continue to do so.

i agree mma has got where it is today without espn and other large sports media (in fact they have often done their best to put it down). mma as a sport doesnt need these people yes it would be nice to see some reconignition but the fans are what makes the sport as succesfull as it is today. mma has always been about the fans and most fans could care less what espn thinks or says.

Boxing may be in decline but Mayweather and the Pac man are still huge draws they both out sell any UFC event in PPV buys and there are great athletes in a more accepted sport so it's not surprising and there's no shame for any MMA fighter missing out on awards to those two. And if the hate for MMA was so big GSP and Edgar in particular would not even got a nomination now if someone like David Haye or the Klitchko bro's won then i'd agree with this article.

Just look at the fighters accomplishments compared to the others. Then look at me with a straight face saying mayweather or manny didn't deserve to win over any mma fighter.

I ****ing love lyoto but come on man =(
