Newly crowned UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie "The Answer" Edgar may find himself fighting BJ Penn for the second time, after dethroning "The Prodigy" at UFC 112: Invincible. According to the recent reports, the Ultimate Fighting Championship are considering to award BJ Penn a rematch, sometime between September and November. Frankie Edgar stated in an interview to Sherdog.com that he would be happy to prove that he is a true Champion by defeating Penn for the second time:

“If anybody’s earned a rematch, it’s B.J. He’s a legend at 155. I’m ready for it if that’s definitely going to happen. I’m the champion. I don’t get to pick who I fight; they tell me who I fight.

It was definitely was a close fight, but I truly do feel I won. There’s going to be people that think one way and people that think the other, but all three judges felt I won."

Twenty-eight years old Frankie Edgar has rised his Mixed Martial Arts record to 12-1 after the victory over BJ Penn, losing only to Gray "The Bully" Maynard via Unanimous Decision at UFN 13. Gray Maynard has recently declared that he is the one who should be Frankie Edgar's first title challenger, claiming that unlike his TUF 5 coach, he actually defeated "The Answer".

I guess it's gonna be back to BJ dominating the LW division.

    I definitly don't wanna see a re-match right away.

I am sick of seeing Penn dominate the LW division right now, he should at least win 2 fights before getting another shot.

and what if Penn wins a rematch later this year?

They arent going to give Edgar an immediate rematch.... They would both have 1 win and 1 lose against each other but Edgar would be sent down and have to climb the ladder again, but BJ gets the immediate rematch.

Reason Penn should get a rematch is cause hes the greatest lw in the history of mma and deserves a rematch right away and also, the fight was really close could have gone to Penn so, rematch makes sense

    @ calc66 i agree with you 100%

it will be more interesting to see bj fighting outside the title at 155

so he would become hungry again!

giving him another rematch will probably result of him being the champ again and edgar will go down again and will have to climb the ladder! it dosent seem fair

even if bj is the best lightweight he should at least have 1 fight to get frankie again and let frankie vs maynard in the mean time

bj will become champ again its just matter of time

IMO BJ is one of those guys that comes after titles, keeps champs on their toes because there is the one guy out there that can come and take your title on any given day. BJ is not a champ, he is the guy who makes the champs close the closet door and check under the bed before they go to sleep. In the lightweight division, a well motivated and focused BJ Penn is a nightmare to fight.

Dude, listen to how dumb you sound. BJ is the best LW ever and the fight was too close to call he needs an immediate re-match just like Machida-Shogun.

If you don’t want to see BJ dominate and finish fools via beautiful subs, TKO’s, etc.. Who would you like to see? Frankie Edgar, Mayner, Sherk? LOL! Those cats are stellar Athletes but their game is not as polishes and exiting as Penn’s! If Penn defeats Edgar in LW come August, he will most likely vacate the title and move up to WW. That is the way I think it will go down.

I got my money on BJ on the re-match.

Did you even read what I posted?

I said that if BJ wins an immediate rematch, Edgar would be sent down to climb the ladder again before getting a shot, but Penn gets an immediate rematch.

I just think Penn should have 1-2 fights before he gets another shot.

I thought the whole reason he was going to move up a weight class was because no1 was beating him at LW, but now he lost.

Penn is 6-5 in his last 11 fights (although not all fights were at LW).

I agree and think BJ would win a re-match, but whats the point at giving him one if he is just going to vacate it and move up a weight class?

I did read what you posted and replied back to you. LOL!

Penn deserves an immediate re-match no question. And if Penn wins, I seriously doubt that Edgar would be sent at the bottom for him to climb back up. About the closest thing to give Edgar a run for his money is Sherk & Florian.

Dude, Penn is the best ever and had been dominating so it makes no sense for him to fight 1-2 fights before Edgar. Common, do you find Maynard vs. Edgar more entertaining than Penn vs. Edgar? Hell to the NO. Penn wants to move up to WW to Challenge himself and let alone redeem himself vs. GSP. The fact that Penn is 6-5 in his last 11 fights tells me that you are getting sold numbers over technique and skill. For example, what is Coulture's record, 18-10? Dude, he is considered one of the best ever. A hall of famer for God’s sake! Don’t look at records man; look at the wars and their performances! In this industry, a loss can be worth more than a win. Remember that.

The point is that the re-match will be a better fight and that is what the fans want to see. If BJ can come with a perfect game plan to beat Edgar and get his belt back.

this is the best time foe BJ to move up if he is going to......

He would have to vacate the belt anyway and when he came back down he could just go back to crushing ppl......but I think moving up is getting hard on his body as he is getting older but also he looks better than he ever has....

If I were a betting man, I'd bet on BJ winning a rematch but Edgar won the first fight cleanly and I definitely don't think BJ winning a rematch is a sure thing. If he takes it to the ground, BJ should win but I think he might have too big of an ego to do that. He should have taken it to the ground after the second round and he didn't. I think he thought he would be able to put Edgar away standing up and now he will have to do that for his own ego. Don't get me wrong, I think BJ is great but his ego gets him into trouble sometimes.

Agreed. His ego is the key thing that affected that fight - in BJ's mind he was trying to out-box Edgar who was winning that front and didn't want to take to the ground/adjust his game. I think Dana will make him climb the ladders just to make some extra cash out it though I think a rematch won't happen right away.

I agree I think if BJ takeshim down he will dominate on top

but I think he was worried about the clinch Edgar has pretty hard hands

and they fast and is good in a clinch and if BJ didnt get the takedown

it was going to the clinch and Frankie has really good wrestling but the next fight i think BJ will be really aggresive and just go for it.....

You know I find myself agreeing with alot of your posts. This is the undeniable truth. Too many people dont look at it as MMA as a whole and discuss things here without bias. To many people here get emotional and put their "fan goggles" on when watching these fights! Edgar won clearly and could definitely do it again! Penn is a great fighter and champ and of course we havent seen the last of him!! He should have listened to his corner and finished the fight on the ground. Saying that Penn won is stupid. Even Penn knew he had lost. When the final bell sounded he didnt raise his hands nor did he act in anyway that would suggest he felt he may have won! Coulda, shoulda, woulda, but he didnt!!

Gray got screwed out of the title shot cause of the fights he had the talent level and Edgar was fighting top fighters and fighting all out in all his fights..... Gray I think would of BJ fight if he would of just went all out and didnt hold back when he fought Nate Diaz if he would of been aggresive and went for broke but he didnt he went for just win the round...and at the time Edgar was trying to finish guys

I think Maynard is a no brainer. The fact that this is in question just once again confuses me when it comes to how UFC handles championship contention. As far as people saying they think BJ Penn won.....I dont wanna hurt your feelings but you clearly do not understand MMA, nor do you understand what is important as far as scoring points! Either that or maybe you are such big fans of Penn that you were unable to watch the fight without bias. I am just trying to figure out why you could even possibly think that Penn won? Its clear he didnt and there are 3 licensed judges who agree with me!

You do understand that on basic scoring BJ actually landed more strikes then Edgar? And I am tired of the idea of people running around equals points, it does not! It can win you a fight if you also land more shots (which would be the point of moving around that much) but the idea that if you land fewer strikes but move around more equals a win, is plain stupid.

Also Penn looked really tame in that fight, quite obvious that his mind was on fighting GSP again not Edgar and I still think BJ won that fight. Close fights should also go in favor of the champion.

My predication for the rematch is that BJ destroys Edgar in 2min.

I do respect your opinion and views here and I both appreciate and applaud you for debating without lashing out in a childish manner, as we see alot of that around here. I definitely understand what you are saying about the scoring system as I believe that we have all found ourselves feeling a little cheated or frustrated with the current scoring system!!

Yeah according so fightmetric and myself BJ won that fight, even with sinus infection. If they don't give BJ the rematch, let Florian get the fight with Edgar and BJ vs GAYNERD for #1 spot

Fightmetric is not known for being te most accurate site.

You can easily watch some fights and see the inaccuracies.

Hell just watch round 1 of Machida/Rua and you can see fightmetric is off.

The only reason we have to wait a frickin year to see Shogun & machida AGAIN is because everyone knew Shogun won that, even the Piss drinkers fans.

There is NO reason to see BJ in a rematch right away. Im really not interested in seeing that again....just like the rematch with GSP, useless.

I think Penn deserves a rematch cause it was a close fight he lost his belt and thats what he gets for leaving it to judges, but come on GSP got KTFO by Serra and got a rematch it's only fair being that it was close don't Rampage the guy and give someone else a title shot I could understand if he were injured, but this is really the right thing to do.
