Frank Mir says "muscled-up LHW" Alistair Overeem can't stop Brock Lesnar's double-leg
Posted on December 7, 2011, 10:41 AM by Joey SantosusFormer Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir, who will rematch Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140, shares his thoughts on the recent title fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos and talks about the upcoming clash pitting Brock Lesnar against Alistair Overeem. Mir feels that Overeem is a "muscled-up" Light Heavyweight and says that, unless the Dutchman can land a knockout punch early, Lesnar will put him on his back 99 out of 100 times. "I think Overeem doesn't move his feet well enough to get out of the way. I think that he might think that the guys he's wrestling with, their doubles are something he can sprawl on, but he's not stopping Brock's shot. I think he really has to come out with the mindset that he better land a shot and knock Brock out before he gets going, and I just don't see that happening. ... If they fight each other 100 times, I think Brock's going to get the takedown 99 times, and I don't see how Alistair is going to get up. I know that everybody looks at his traps and arms and they see a big guy, but I look at the guy's waist and legs and I see a guy that's just a well-muscled up Light Heavyweight."

One of those 'muscled up' knees to the face might do.
Overeem the last man standing on the pride hype train. Shaaame shame on mir for trying to point out he might lose to the man we all hate on right after anderson and jones
I agree with Frank Mir, Brocks base is def. going to be an issue in this fight.
Many people dont like Frank, but hes a pretty sharp tool.
Frank is the man.
If Overeem hasn't been working on defending double legs from a variety of big powerful wrestlers for the past few months it's going to be a long night for him. If he can stuff takedowns / get up like Cain did then it's going to be a short night for Lesnar.
Sounds right to me. I have a feeling Overeem's stock will drop after this fight as well as his confidence in fighting the best in the UFC.
True, but even a couple months of working with everybody but Brock is not the same as being a wrestler. It's takes YEARS and YEARS to develop that base and understand how body weight is used properly.
I feel the same about both of these fighters. ehh..
I'd have to agree with Frank as well, but Alistar can THROW.
In training MMA for so long, Overeem has had years to learn about using body wt. He already has good TDD. If he has been working with good wrestlers (like the guys at Extreme Couture for example) he should do okay against the take down of a wrestler who has difficulty with guys he outweighs by 50 lbs. Frank only thinks this because he got manhandled.
i like frank mir as a commentator i think he wud add alot to rogan and goldie commentary im rly getting sick of those guys they say the same shit
I think he sux. He's fidgety, jerky and tries to talk waaaay to fast and often merges words and syllables together in an awkward fashion. If Mir threw some curse words around while he talked you'd swear he has turrets. I cannot believe he said what he did about Brock's performance. I ALWAYS cringe and (up till now) felt sorry and was embarrassed for Mir when he spoke in public. From now on I'll throw out any empathy and just laugh. He truly is a d-bag. hope Big Nog squashes him. And just to piss him off, Big Nog HAD STAPH last time and YES, that contributed to his loss.
I'm just sick of Goldie!! a.k.a Rogan's echo
So am I, have been for years. Put Bas in there with Joe. That would be awesome.
I really like frank mir at times and others i hate him. This time he comes off as an pretty arrogant guy. Anyway i really think Overeem vs Brock will be a remake of Overeem vs Todd Duffee
I think Brock vs Overeem will be a remake of Randy Couture vs James Toney!!!
He didn't say what you wanted...that's the definition of arrogant
mir: "i dont over anylize things" HA!
After his rape, Mir fall in love whit Lesnar...BTW oldie but goldi Big Nog will tear you a new one ;)
being a muscled up LWH is better than being a chubby LWH Frank....
Good point about this being as close to a pure "striker vs grappler" match as we're going to get in this day and age.
I usually dont mind Frank Mir and seems like a cool guy when i met him. But what he's saying here is idiotic ("Alistair cant beat Brock 99/1100 times, he's just a muscled up lhw, he's just a pure striker etc). His ignorance is crazy.
all because he had trouble fighting Brock, he thinks Alistair wont be able to beat him.
*100
Maybe he's actually watched overeem fight, or looked at who he's fought. Wasn't exactly a beast in the werdum match......but i'm not on hype drugs that makes him fedor henderson and shogun superhuman when they win(no matter who it is) and prepares excuses when they lose.
I agree with Frank on this. If you look at Brock, he's built like a tank. His musculature has been conditioned by years and years of wrestling. Overeem is strong looking but he doesnt have the wrestlers physique. He's top heavy and I honestly don't seem him stopping Brocks double leg. Honestly that's what I hope to see Brock do. Wrestle and GnP this guy. Not try and trade punches with a freakin K-1 champ. Get him down and pummel him. If Brock can stay away from the Dutchman's hands and knees (especially the knees) he has a shot at winning this fight. Even if Overeem survives a round of being controlled on the ground, he'll be so drained from having Lesnar's weight on top of him that it will take the pepper of his punches in a big way.
Seems to me like people are forgetting that overeem has 19 wins by submission. Brock lesnar is off course of another level on the ground but people here talk like overeem is a kickboxer who just started doing mma.
Overeem's last last three submission victories are over Gary Goodridge?, Tony Sylvester? and James Thompson? (James Thompson was TKO'd by Kimbo Slice).
Overeem got 19 submition wins Mir got only 8 he dosent now wat he is talking about the only way Lesnar can win with lucky punch all the way Overeem to win
Actually with your grammar I dont know what YOU're talking about .
I've got Overeem to win this also but Lesner has a chance to control Overeem on the ground and win via gnp. I don't think it will happen but Overeem's victory is not a foregone conclusion.
Ican say this I really dont like Frank Mir a whole lot him a whole lot but there is one thing that you have to give him credit is he knows MMA, and he is correct when talking about this fight and alister he really is a flatfooted fighter and Brock is unusually fast for a HW not to mention the fact that Frank has fought Brock twice before and he will get alister down without a doubt the question is how will lesner react when he gets hit thats the big question cause I think that Alister can hit him
Frank is right..Overeem fought as a light heavyweight in pride and got knocked out a few times by Chuck Liddell amongst others..I dont know why he decided to try to take on Heavyweights..Maybe the legal roids in Japan gave him a different mindset..Although anything can happen in this fight..I dont think Lesnar can take a punch..Even Randy had him hurt with punches up against the cage..We all know what happened when he got punched in the last 2 fights ...lol...
Watch some LHW Vs HW fights and you will know exactly why Overeem came to HW. It is an easier division.
Once in a while I express my true feelings on a fighter even if its not popular to others. This will most likely be one of those moments.
Overeem had pretty good skills as a LHW but yes he got beat a lot and most of that was in the Pride days, so at that time, he was in the best org available. Pride goes away, he muscles up(speculative how he did it)
Then fights at HW, but stays away from the best MMA org.
I think Reem is going to be exposed badly very soon.
K-1....Strikeforce...Brett Rogers..Werdum, IMO hes one of the most over hyped fighters in the world right this second.
OK let the public stoning begin, I brought my spartan sheild just in case.
There is more than TDD at play here. In my opinion, if Brock is too aggressive in attempting to take The Reem then he will find himself in one of The Reems nasty guillotine chokes and he'll tap out. Personally, I would still love to see another UberKnee highlight reel knock out and I think Brock and his style is tailor made for that.
