Frank Mir defeats Roy Nelson via Unanimous Decision
Posted on May 28, 2011, 10:09 PM by Anton GurevichFormer UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir got his second consecutive victory inside the Octagon, with a convincing performance over the TUF 10 Winner and the former IFL Heavyweight Champion "Big Country" Roy Nelson.
Mir displayed an improved striking arsenal, with knees, elbows, kicks, and the most important, effective takedowns that put Roy Nelson on his back on several occasions. War at the fence exhausted both fighters, but still, it was Frank Mir who managed to remain in control, cruising to one of the most important victories of his MMA career.
Roy Nelson was completely exhausted in Round 3, allowing Frank Mir to take him down three times (according to CompuStrike). Mir was constantly looking for a submission, but could easily do more damage via a classic ground and pound from the mount.
Frank Mir is now 15-5, with Brendan Schaub (if defeats Nogueira at UFC: Rio) as his next possible opponent, in what would be a #1 Contender bout for a shto at the UFC Heavyweight title.

All the Mir haters can stick that in their juice boxes and SUCK IT!!!
Surprised Big country was favored on the lowpicks. Mir is probably the most well rounded HW along with Cain, he looked a bit tired but hopefully he can get back in the cage very soon and build on this win. That throw was great too.
I'm assuming his cardio wasn't that great because of him having to make weight.
glorified hugging match. i know theyre friends, but come on..
Fighting against the cage sucks a lot of the energy out of you. Remember how Randy had Lesnar breathing hard by the end of Round One?
Mir was great so dominant....Nelson has heart but he gassed hard mite hve been cause he hasnt fought since August but still Mir looked unbeatable, he did w.e he wanted to Nelson....don't no who Mir will fight next maybe loser of JDS/Carwin or winner of Schaub/Nog both seem like good options
I'd say winner of Schaub/Nog vs. Mir for a title shot. If it was against the loser of JDS/Carwin than that person would be getting two #1 Contender shots in a row.
I think the best case scenario for the fans and Mir is if Big Nog beats Schaub and fights Mir. Have a proper rematch, no staph infections, no excuses, with the winner getting a shot at the belt. I think Mir would win, but I do agree with people who think that Nog is deserving of a rematch.
Mir isn't significant in the Heavyweight division what so ever. All he does is grind out a few victories then get stomped by any of the top 5 fighters. If they end up doing some cross promotion card in Montreal with St Pierre and Nick Diaz they should put Mir up against some Strikeforce HW contenders, I like seeing Frank Mir bloody and dead on the octagon floor.
Wow that's pretty harsh. I love MMA but I wouldn't want anyone to be bloody and dead. What I like about Mir is he always gets back on the horse, his momentum doesn't change from a loss like other fighters would after getting beat into hamburger meat. Now, you gave yourself that sharp didn't you?
we want see you in that condition. stupid prick.
People just hate on Mir because he's muscular, intelligent, articulate, and successful in his career. He has everything they envy.
@nightmonkey
Not sure about people being jealous however you have brought 1 thing I like about Mir. He is very articulate, and his fight break downs are so much more interesting than 99% of fighter's. I also enjoyed his commentary in the WEC, sure he had a few rough moments but Goldbeerg has them every PPV and seems to be setting worse
"cruising to one of the most important victories of his MMA career." what?

what the **** is wrong with you ?
Grappling against the fence can suck the life out of you, and take the pop from your punch.
Mir dominated a much 'leaner' than usual Roy Nelson, on his feet and on the ground. Mir's takedown defense was impressive, and reduced Nelson to a telegraphed looping right.
As usual, Nelson withstood a huge amount of punishment, eating a number of big knees delivered by Mir.
If JDS couldn't KO Big Country, Mir should feel no shame he could not do the same. Mir looked even more well-rounded than ever, but did not use his jap or his hands--probably due to the takedown threat.
Mir needs a step up in competition.
Great show from Mir and was a big step up from his last outing, he came closer to finishing Roy than Junior did.
My only problems with this performance was he looked very tired at the end of the 3 round fight, when he was in control the full time, I could see Cain or Junior being fine the full 5 rounds compare to this.
Also another thing is his chin has always been suspect, but he got clipped a couple of times and even look like he was stunned after a couple of right hands from Roy. I hate to say it but I doubt that his chin will hold up against Dos Santos or Velasquez.
Overall very happy with Mir's performance and Roy's chin and heart.

if you compare their fight against nelson mir appeared to be alot better every where than dos santos i know mma math never really works but mir hit him with almost everything while dos santos seemed confused when his punching only style failed to finish
In no way or form did Mir impress me tonight.
At this point, I don't see him beating Carwin, Velasquez, Dos Santos, Lesnar, Overeem, Werdum or Big Foot.
Let's see how he does against a guy like Schaub first before getting another top competitor.
carwin, cain no lesnar maybe but after this preformance i would pick mir over dos santos anyday he was more dominant than jds against cro cop and nelson and all around has fought a lot tougher competition
Are you serious? He was NOT dominate against Cro Cop or even Nelson. And he does not stand a chance against Dos Santos (striking).
I don't know what fights you were watching.
You're one of those people that doesn't think Jon Fitch is dominant either, aren't you?
In both fights he dictated the pace. He pushed them both around, Cro Cop against the cage and Nelson onto the ground. He outstruck them both. He made Cro Cop look so bad he almost got fired. He judo slammed Nelson so hard people about 10 rows back felt it. He took down Roy almost at will while stuffing all of his takedown attempts. And the instant Cro Cop, supposedly a very elite striker, showed any signs of aggression, Mir knocked him out with one good shot. Dominance demonstrated.
The boast that Chael makes about himself ("I've won every minute of every fight I've ever been in.") is actually true for Mir's last two fights. And unless they throw Mir against someone that can match him in terms of physicality and skill, it'll continue to be that way.
Nope, I am a fan of Jon Fitch... but what Mir did was nothing similar. Frank struggled to put away a hallow Mirko and now an out of shape Nelson. Other than Mir's knees and takedowns, what offense was Mir able to instill?
Mir failed to take advantage of his takedowns and was unable to organize his striking (no combinations, just single shots). He can't pull that stunt with the elite in the division.
In addition, Mir looked incredibly slow and unprepared for a three round fight.
Mir was struggling with his developing wrestling to take down Cro Cop, a fighter who statistically has the best takedown defense in the UFC. When he went for a finish, he got it.
As for Nelson... damn, what can I say? Dude has a chin made out of anvils. Mir put Mirko out with a single knee, and Big Country took how many?
the ref needs to sort out the "leaning on your opponent" on the cage side. Its becoming a new version of the lay and prey in the way that it stops any action from happening for quite a while. Ref needs to break it up quicker I think. Another mediocre performance by Mir, I mean wasn't he speaking about his punches sending Kongo across the mat. Mir sure does like to lean on people on the cage too, this is the 3rd fight I can recall him doing that in recent times.
To be fair, if I heard that Mir was going to full force knee Nelson in the face about ten times in the first round, I'd have wondered if Big Country was dead, nevermind unconscious. Roy is like the Terminator with 30% body fat.
I was under the impression that Mir was not going to keep all of that extra muscle he put on for the Carwin fight. Guess I was wrong, dude is freakin HUGE.
