Frank Mir defeats Roy Nelson via Unanimous DecisionPosted on May 28, 2011, 10:09 PM by Anton Gurevich
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir got his second consecutive victory inside the Octagon, with a convincing performance over the TUF 10 Winner and the former IFL Heavyweight Champion "Big Country" Roy Nelson.
Mir displayed an improved striking arsenal, with knees, elbows, kicks, and the most important, effective takedowns that put Roy Nelson on his back on several occasions. War at the fence exhausted both fighters, but still, it was Frank Mir who managed to remain in control, cruising to one of the most important victories of his MMA career.
Roy Nelson was completely exhausted in Round 3, allowing Frank Mir to take him down three times (according to CompuStrike). Mir was constantly looking for a submission, but could easily do more damage via a classic ground and pound from the mount.
Frank Mir is now 15-5, with Brendan Schaub (if defeats Nogueira at UFC: Rio) as his next possible opponent, in what would be a #1 Contender bout for a shto at the UFC Heavyweight title.
