Former WEC Champ Miguel Torres jokes about rape on Twitter, gets cut from the UFC
Posted on December 9, 2011, 08:06 AM by Anton GurevichAfter some controversial tweeting from Forrest Griffin and the Penn State remark by Rashad Evans, it looks like the UFC President Dana White had enough.
Former WEC Bantamweight Champion (and one of the best Pound-for-Pound fighters during that time) Miguel Torres paid a price of getting cut from the Ultimate Fighting Championship, after making a somewhat evil rape joke in one of his tweets. Torres, who has nearly 50,000 followers, tweeted the following:
“If a rape van was called a surprise van more women wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises.”
Dana White's reaction was quick. The UFC President told MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani "enough is enough", explaining that Miguel Torres crossed a clear line between his personal humor to what can be posted on a public domain.
Miguel Torres is 40-4 in his MMA career, holding a UFC record of 2-1. Alongside the former UFC Middleweight title challenger Nate "The Great" Marquardt, Torres is the most high-profile fighter cut by the UFC in 2011.

Goodness thats probably the most expensive joke Miguel has ever cracked
I thought that joke was pretty funny, but then again any 16 year old guy would.
Dana White took it kinda way to seriously, he would of been fine just ignoring the tweet
for some guy who says **** every other sentence dana is handling this like a hypocritical woman. its a joke about rape can the world lighten up jesus christ. No matter how serious the matter is people will joke about it. grow uppp
I think political correctness is over done in a lot of cases but rape just isn't funny. Hopefully it never happens to someone you love.
bruce lee.... shut up. nobody deserves to loose their job over a tweet, thats the only thing politically incorrect about the situation lol. if rape happened to someone i loved i would feel terrible about the subject. but would i cry when people make jokes about i? no because thats what people do, they push buttons, sad but true. welcome to the real world my friend lets grow a pair.
Would you cry when people made jokes about it after your loved one was raped "NO"!?!? Well, your family all would. You would rile too my boy you're just not mature enough to know it yet.
Yeah, I'm with Bruce on this one.
"brucelee" miguel shouldn't loose his job, and UFC fans shouldn't loose a high level exciting fighter just because he made a inappropriate comment. a simple apology would have sufficed. the fact that your a grown man and have lived on this earth many years and seen how shitty this world can be and yet you still cringe at things like a stupid immature rape joke? a mature person would have intelligence to ignore the comment and realize the person who said it is stupid. so i stand by my comment, you have the life experience of a girl scout and you can't even tolerate a retarted joke about rape. clearly it was inappropriate and it shouldn't have been said, but my point is you wouldn't have even heard this story if he didn't get fired, we would still have a fantastic fighter on the UFC roster if people just ignored a silly comment. so in the grand scheme of things this joke means nothing and morons like you just made a huge deal about it.
jesus christ so kneeing someone in the face on purpose and spiting on his team "bisping" is not as bad as sending a stupid tweet, dana is such a two faced prick, if this was a top money maker fighter dana wouldnt of done shiit, no way did he deserve to lose his job for that, dis is dana at his finest power tripping bully
You have to be a curret/former UFC champ to tweet whatever you want. WEC champion isn't good enough.
That sorta reminds me of how dana fired someone for looking the wrong way. Chael sonnen can say this and get a pat on the back.
rape would become the new missionary.
its a pretty harsh punishment for a dark joke, i think what rashad said to phil davis was much worse at the conference and dana just had words with him, not trying to diss rashad either cause im a huge fan.
i remember seing mike tyson at a press conferene calling a guy in the audience a white **** pussy n " ill fuk you till you love me ****" n just got away with it lol .
For once i agree with Dana on this one. Anyone who finds that joke funny obviously does not regard rape as a serious offense and has zero respect for women.
Torres is a moron.
I guess the UFC decided to RAPE Torres pockets.
I wonder if Miguel would of been cut if the FOX deal wasn't in place at the time.
As the article stated, it has to do with the timing & Miguel making the comment on the heels of what Forrest & Rashad just said.
Dana thinks Miguel is a rapist...
UFC..... brand... image.. going on Fox.... Take notice fighters.. it's still a job at the end of the day.... and your employer will can you for stupid shit.
freedom of speech biatch !
There is still freedom of speech but with great power comes great responsibility. Don't ever think there aren't consequences for things you say.
freedom to cut someone for making a lame joke about something people shouldn't joke about. Dana had every right to do so.
To bad...Miguel made a stupid joke and Dana wants to make this a lesson for the others..Another "example" that he does not care about the fans.Bussines as usual baby.... Dana`s interviews are full with "very nice"words and he can judge the others.. To bad that a person like him is a dictator instead an ambasador of the sport
There is a huge difference between using foul language and making light of rape.
I think Miguel Torres will be back soon enough some sort of apology will be made
This was a quote from "Its always sunny in Philadelphia". A show thats on the network that UFC will start showing fights on. WHY IN THE HELL DID HE GET CUT FOR CLEARLY SAYING A QUOTE? This might be the dumbest cut that dana has ever done. Being a mexican of course torres is going to be one of my favorite fighters. How about you cut rashad when he said something on a live interview instead of cutting someone because of there stupid ****ing twitter. **** DANA WHITE
I dont judge my favorite fighter by race. You just made it sound like its a given because your mexican. I prefer to think of myself as an American first and foremost, but, I'll be fair and state you didnt mention where you live. Im sure with Dana's take on this, their contract MUST have some stipulations regarding public behavior.
I live in Iowa so I'm a mexican american but there arent a lot of mexican fighters in the ufc. I'm not calling anyone out on race or anything its just weird that rashad can say something totally uncalled for about a respectable school that has run into some trouble recently and he doesnt get a slap on the wrist or anything. But torres puts something on TWITTER. Personally I don't even have a twitter but regardless what he said was from a show. Dana needs to go **** himself. Thats all I gotta say on this I'm still pissed
hopefully he will apologize..It is obvious to see that Dana know that made an impulsive move here.. Common man...!
If you put it in this way he should cut Chael long time ago.. .But we all love Chael Sonnen even if he is a .... sometimes :)
Yep -- I completely agree with you. Miguel Torres was an idiot for saying such thing, but I see double standard written all over this one.
Oddly as it sounds, I have more respect for Dana now. If you have ever known a girl this has happened to or maybe someone's family, it can create instant rage and hate. I did know a girl this happened to, and Im sure if I were in front of Miguel when he said that, Ide make him take it back or Ide throw him across the room.
Miguel is a dumbass for repeating anything said that is obsurd from anyone else. If someone else said it and Miguel repeated it... He is the dumber idiot. He has nothing else to tweet about to his followers... JACKASS
I personally would of probably suspended Rashad and Forest for the other comment. Think about it...Your making somekind of statement that is tasteless about a violent criminal act "Rape".
Stay the hell away from talking about crap like that....
Strange... I remember White calling a reporter a **** not too long ago. That was an actual interview, how is that not worse then someone on their personal twitter? Even nearing the end of this interview how White was talking about how people are human and they'll eventually say something dumb, it sounded like he was almost defending torres actions. I think the fire was absurb.
Pretty harsh to cut the guy like that...
I smell Strikeforce..... :D
No matte what Dana says its not hard to read between the lines on this one. While I think that is a disgusting joke I do feel Torres is getting hit by a perfect storm. UFC going mainstream with FOX, Rashad and Forrest having recently made rape comments, Torres being the most expendable of the 3 and Dana was confronted about in an interview.
Also I think its pretty unacceptable to Dana that a fighter caused him to sit speechless in an interview.
I bet getting fired wasn't suprise Torres liked.
Quoting a show thats on a channel which fox owns get you cut? Weird
I have a feeeling Dana doesnt watch that lame show anyways. It does suck.
lol It did get him in deep water, but thats easier to expel as fighting talk, what Miguel said, there is no substitute for.
And he got cut by the same UFC president that has told many people to get certain fighters nuts outs of there mouth?
One can only assume Dana has been raped at some point in his life.
People click funny but lifes dark and you never know.
Actually, you probably don't realize what is happening in the business world. More and more companies are requiring that any employees who go on twitter not link their company to bad behavior on a public forum--or they will be summarily fired.
Twitter is public, and you can't take it back once it is out there. The UFC is a brand, and like any brand--they must protect their image vigorously--or their business will suffer. Cussing or fight talk can be let slide, but there are a number of subjects/jokes which should be treated as only for private consumption, not just for the UFC, but for any person who is viewed publicly as the representative of a brand or company.
I once thought Torres was reasonably intelligent, but his very public tweet revealed he just doesn't get it.
PS: I was not impressed by Rashad or Forrest either. Torres was fired because he could be, without a serious effect on UFC revenues.
The UFC whipping boy, so to speak.
i have one question please... what did rashad said?? i still dont know that
he said something to the effects to phil davis at the fox presser that he was going to put his hand all over him (davis) like that Penn state coach with kids. Something to that effect.
what dana really said is....
I didnt cut rashad or forrest because theyre high profile fighters and torres isnt. I had to make an example out of some1 and make myself loook good
public eye or not, imagine how you would feel if you were fired from your job for something you typed on facebook or twitter. How can this even be legal. This is a brutal power trip by Dana White. I understand you dont want to give UFC a bad name or bring bad publicity. These are grown men and professional atheletes to fire someone over a comment on a social meadia site in incredibly stupid and giving these sites way to much recognition. Its fights I care about not facebook and twitter. This is the main problem with UFC. Soon it wont be about the fights at all more about the bullshit surrounding it. Just like how football is more about gambling and beer drinking than it is about playing.
its not Danas place or right to censor what his employees say. End of story. Dana said he doesnt like this perfect world the media has created thats full of political correctness; sure looks like you agree with it only when it suits you.
If you worked for a company and publically said things that hurt the company, they'de fire you in a second. What planet do you live on? Ever had a job?
If anybody in the NFL, MLB or NBA tweeted the same thing I'm pretty sure they would get drilled about it too. Maybe not fired but a HUGE fine...
If only it would have been a funny joke...
Dana has a quick temper.... Just happened to be the 3rd rape joke of the week Dana blew his top... Your Fired Son !
Torres better hope he never goes to prison of he'll end up "the butt" of that joke.
It was in poor taste to even quote a line like that on a public domain that children have access to. I would have thought better of that from Torres. But people get fired for the dumb sh-t all the time. it happens more than one might think. Thankfully no-one close to me has had this misfortune in their lives; but it still leaves a bad taste in the air when joked about like it is no big deal. But it might not have gotten so much more unnecessary press if White would have ignored it. He just added fuel to the fire by terminating Torres for the remark.
dislike all you want but rashad and forrest made references to the same shit. dana white own up and fire them or Give Torres his job back. this is bullshit
Dana you piece of shit....Rashad Evans live comment about dishing out worse treatment than the college victims sexxual abuse was the lowest comment anyone could make...especially for the victims...
Both miguel and rashad should be sacked.......double standard....dana proved his true colours
Get Miguel Torres back in the ufc .. we dont care about things he tweets !
He is a ****ing great fighter so get him back .. fine him or something like that dont CUT him just stupid if you ask me .
Torres is a huge asset to the bantam weight division and the ufc in general. I think a fine would have been more in line with what he did (it was just a tweet). He s gona go wreck shit in Strikeforce then be back in the UFC.
As a professional in sports you can not just say whatever the hell you want! Especially when there are thousands of people that are going to read it! The punishment may have been a little steep but he will be back fighting again soon! The point had to be made that even if you are a great fighter you still have an ethical and moral code as someone that people look up to and support! Justified... Yes... A little steep... Yes but like I said we will see him again soon!
