Five reasons why Jake Shields will beat Georges St. Pierre (or not)

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges "Rush" St. Pierre will be one step away from cleaning up the 170-pound division, this time facing the former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields. The fight is expected to headline UFC's Toronto event, which will take place at the famous Rogers Centre in the city.

Just like before Cain Velasquez's UFC 121 bout against Brock Lesnar, we'll try to find 5 reasons why Jake Shields is the man to beat Georges St. Pierre, or maybe not.

American Jiu-Jitsu

Jake Shields is one of the best grapplers in Mixed Martial Arts. Period.  Shields's No Gi Jiu-Jitsu skills are second to none, and clearly better than the one of Georges St. Pierre. Training alongside Cesar Gracie only helps for the further improvement of Jake Shields's submission game, which will have to be at its best in a fight against St. Pierre.  10 out of 26 Jake Shields's career victories come via Submission.

Why not?
St. Pierre trains his Jiu-Jitsu at Renzo Gracie Academy in Connecticut. In my opinion, this is the only place where he can learn to defend Jake Shields's submission game. There's a good chance St. Pierre can neutralize Jake Shields's Jiu-Jitsu and impose his will on the former Strikeforce and Elite XC Champion.

Wrestling

Combined with Jiu-Jitsu, Jake Shields has exceptional wrestling skills. The fight against a takedown machine in Dan Henderson is a living proof Shields can match-up against some of the best wrestlers in the game, and leave with his hand raised. And just like St. Pierre will look to neutralize Shields's submissions, the challenger will work hard stopping St. Pierre's takedowns. Jake Shields is not Dan Hardy or Thiago Alves. Josh Koscheck did a great job by stopping some of St. Pierre's takedowns, as I expect more of the same from Jake Shields.

Why Not?
Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch are all elite wrestlers, but GSP was still able to take them down. Shields could stop some of St. Pierre's takedowns, but he will surely not stop all of them. The most important thing about Georges St. Pierre is how he manages to frustrate his opponents while on top. He does a lot of damage via ground and pound, without even trying to pass his opponent's guard. GSP could use against Shields the same ground strategy he used against BJ Penn, and we all know the result.

Experience

Jake Shields fought the who-is-who of MMA, defeating the likes of Yushin Okami, Toby Imada, Kauzo Misaki, Mach Sakurai, Carlos Condit, Nick Thompson, Paul Daley, Robbie Lawler, Mayhem Miller, Dan Henderson and Martin Kampmann. It's a long list of top welterweights, who are still in position to challenge titles in their promotions. Georges St. Pierre is a unique fighter, but he will struggle to surprise Jake Shields with something he never faced in Mixed Martial Arts. Shields's experience will be his best friend in this fight, especially if Georges St. Pierre comes up with unexpected gameplan, just like he did against Josh Koscheck.

Why not?
Georges St. Pierre will have the help of Greg Jackson, who will surely come up with some sort of surprising gameplan. St. Pierre has an individual approach for every fighter, so Jake Shields will have to be ready for everything: from aggressive submission attempts to a stand-up war. Jake Shields will have to take a careful look at GSP's fights against Alves, Penn and Koscheck, and learn how not to fall victim to an unstoppable "control freak" in GSP.

Great strategy against Strikers

St. Pierre displayed a very sharp and technical striking game in a fight against Josh Koscheck. But when looking at Jake Shields's record, there's a recent victories over fighters like Dan Henderson, Paul Daley and Robbie Lawler. All elite strikers, who are well-known for knocking out their opponents out cold. The fact that Shields vas able to survive Dan Henderson's "H-Bomb", is a proof that he has a very good chin. Shields knows how to fight against strikers, and he will show it against GSP.

Why not?
GSP has one of the best trainers in history of Boxing at his disposal. Freddy Roach will analyze Jake Shields's game, and arm St. Pierre with all the necessary tools to dominate the fight. GSP showed the whole world that you don't have to be a well-known knockout artist to dominate your opponents on feet. Good use of jabs is more than enough; ask Josh Koscheck. Also, GSP's unusual Kyokushin
Karate stance is what differs him from the likes of Henderson and Lawler, which can cause Jake Shields a lot of problems during the fight.

High expectations from GSP

It will be Georges St. Pierre's 6th title defense, and one step from clearing up the UFC Welterweight division. St. Pierre may see in Shields only one fight from the thing that "really matters", the superfight against Anderson Silva. Jake Shields has a lot to prove after an unimpressive performance against Martin Kampmann, as Georges St. Pierre already solidified his status as one of the All-time Greats. I will not be surprised if St. Pierre, even sub-consciously, underestimates Jake Shields.

Why not?
Mental condition is one of the most important aspects in a sport like Mixed Martial Arts, and I could easily name GSP alongside Fedor Emelianenko as the most mentally tough fighters in the sport. Both have somewhat similar personalities, as I it's mostly unlikely that GSP will underestimate Jake Shields. Yes, that's exactly what happened to Fedor against Werdum, but reflecting on GSP's analytical nature I predict that he will remain focused against Jake Shields.

I would like to see Shields win. Do I like him? No not really. But what would Dana say about having his champs being the best than? Maybe he would open his eyes and see Fedor and Overeem.

GSP by KO 2nd round, shield have no stand up game and GSP always fights his openents in their weakness plus he can stuff shields takedowns, so he will keep the fight standing and fock up shields face

there is a great point there! Shields beat Henderson , Daley and Lawler who are far better strikers than GSP and with more power.

GSP could dominated him with wrestling for sure but theres always Shields ground game to be considered.

my guess is GSP will do the same he did to BJ and take the Decision again. if GSP really wants to step up and move up he needs to improve his stand up and killer instinct otherwise he will get stuck in rematches at WW the next years.

Watching new fighter with amazing skills like Aldo,Pettis,Cruz,Jones

should be a reminder that if you dont evolved you will get behind.

    GSP needs to finish Shields!

Exactly. GSP will force JS to stand and finally for the first time JS weak stand up will cause him to lose and probably even look very foolish doing so. I predict he'll have one eye swollen shut just like Kos.

All shields needs to do to avoid a KO is fall to his back everytime he gets hit. It's an AWESOME strategy for a bjj guy, just ask leites, maia or werdum

Been awhile since GSP finished anyone at his weight too, so it's possible he might follow him

i disagree, shields will be gsp's toughest test since the likes of fitch and penn. if he shields can take him down then he could be in trouble. but then it'd be foolish to doubt gsp's wrestling so really the fight could go either way.

@huge clearance. do you think kos is better than shields everywhere, including his record and calibre of people he has fought and beaten? im not at all a shields fan but i respect his record a lot more than kos's, and i think he has better wrestling and jj than kos. Plus i think shields has fought more fighters of a better level and has a better record.Dont get me wrong, I still think gsp wins this fight but to say kos is much better than shields, i think you are wrong. Kos didnt even have a decent game plan, and it was the re-match. you would think that he would do much better in the re-match but he did worse, so what did he learn, change or adapt. ZERO

I dont think it's either way. It's going to be domination by GSP as usual. It's not like shields is lightyears ahead of GSP in terms of grappling so I don't even see GSP getting caught in a submission

it's still mma dude. nobody thought werdum would beat fedor in the first 2 minutes, nobody thought sonnen would push silva the way he did and certainly nobody thought serra would knock out gsp. when 2 of the most talented guys in their weight class come together anything can happen.

carwin being submitted by lesnar etc. yes i agree with that and it's that very loss that made him a great fighter, and by no means do i think shields will knock him out, but i find it annoying when people say that one guy is going to completely bulldoze a guy as talented and successful as shields, when if you've ever watched a mma, there is always at least one upset on a card. i feel shields has the edge in grappling but gsp is the more well rounded fighter, so really it will come down to whoever implements their gameplan best.

Going with 'not' on this one.

He has absolutely nothing for GSP. I can name five guys who have a better chance at beating GSP than him simply because they punch better and harder, even though I think Shields would beat four of those guys. No one can out-class GSP in any aspect of the sport. Even though Shields' jiu jitsu is better in its purest form, I don't think that's enough for MMA because GSP's wrestling is so much more powerful and he's so strong.

And I really hope that Jake doesn't actually think that his wrestling is on par with St. Pierre's... if he does, he's going to be in for a long night. That's all he should be working until their fight, sweeps and most of all takedowns! St. Pierre is a genius fighter with that asshole Gred Jackson in his corner; do you think they're going to decide to take Shields down and submit him? Maybe a few takedowns to secure rounds, but this fight will be contested on the feet and St. Pierre is going to break Shields' face.

I've come to the realization that many are not even familiar with Shields and what he brings to the table. They're basing their opinions off of the Kampmann fight alone. Its surprising how many do not watch any MMA outside of the UFC. Not to say that Shields will necessarily win, but he poses a bigger threat than many of GSP's past opponents have.

ok i'm not a shields expert cause i hate his style!!!

but i can remember some of his fights..

for examplethe fight against daley from elite xc

and if i remember well he got rocked bad a few times

in the stand up and on the ground he was doing

nearly no damage.. he finaly won by submission..

but come on thats not a big deal against somebody

    without groud skills...

    the mayhem fight.. :-D

he won a decision where he was again doing no

damage and was saved by the bell from getting

choked out!!?? (2nd or 3rd round)

and mayhem looked fine after the fight!!!

    the hendo fight

shields dominated him but again did not that much damage!!!

and i think if they would fight again it will not heppen

    like that again!!

he only scores points with his take downs and his ability

to keep his opponents on the ground... thats it!!

and all that will not work agains someone like GSP!

i think its true that shields is maybe the biggest threat in

terms of wrestling.. but he'll never be able to do

that to GSP!! never!! whole nother level of fighter!!

GSP has beaten some of the best guys with fenomenal

ground game like hughes, FITCH, kos and bj penn

    remember that!!!

ok sorry for annoying you with that..

but i never told you to read it...:-D

ps: watch the jake shields muai thay workout..

worst stand up in mma ever!!to funny to watch :-D

if he will stand up only for 1 minute he will be

KTFO with 2 broken orbital bones... :-D

Joey are yu saying that you think shields is a better wrestler than koscheck? Because if you are I couldn't disagree with you more. And maybe some people are basing it off the Kampmann fight but for myself I'm basing it off it all. GSP is a better striker, wrestler and matchable grappling compared to shields I don't think he poses any new theats that gsp hasnt handled before either.

Shields is a FAR superior wrestler to Koscheck. In fact he makes Fitch look like an amateur. He has bested not only Dan Henderson but also Okami. GSP will out strike him with his eyes closed but he will never beat him in wrestling OR on the ground. He is light years ahead of GSP at those ranges.

you may see another clinic from GSP against SHields, and he will outclass him in ALL areas. I agree with some sentiments about Shields resume deserving respect, it speaks for itself, but IMO he should not even be getting a shot as Kampmann won that fight. Check out fightmetric for the stats and it shows Kampmann miles ahead in all areas except for takedowns.

Yeah, I lost all respect for fightmetric a LOOONG time ago. The Kampmann fight was extremely close but it was the right decision. Shields barely, but clearly won. He controlled the fight and that is that. I personally thought that Kampmann could have won but as usual he made a stupid choice and tried to out do his opponent in their strength like he did with Daley and he lost. GSP will try to keep this standing. If he does, he will win. If he does not, Shields will win.

why does everyone overlook the fact that shields cut something ridiculous like 20 or 25 pounds the day before the fight? he was gassed after the first round and still managed to pull off what i believe was a clear win for him. being able to beat kampmann when he was at a fraction of his fighting ability is only further proof of his awesomeness. he deserves the title shot because he's on a 15 fight win streak against mostly top competition and gsp has beaten everyone else. end rant.

How did he control the fight when he took more damage? Hugging and takedowns have far too much kudos. It's a fight after all isn't it? If it was in a playground everyone would have called Kampmann the winner.

Oh, and I am pretty sure Kos showed equal wrestling to GSP's in their last fight. George only completed two takedowns. The rest were stuffed with ease. Shields is the best wrestler at 170. He isn't explosive but I think I can count the times he's been stuffed on one hand. Once he gets that single you are going down.

There is NO 170 pounder on the horizon with the complete set of tools to beat GSP atop his game now. After honing his skills following the Sera fluke, you are seeing a fighter not unlike Manny Paq in boxing, who is determined to be better every single fight. The only option left is for Dana to give him a real incentive to come up and take Andersons belt away in a super-fight ... now LONG overdue

Cool article. I like both of these fighters a lot and really don't see a clear winner here myself. I may flip a coin to decide who to go with in the picks. One correction though. Georges did not train Shotokan, he trained Kyokushin. As far as stance goes it is kind of academic but Kyokushin is a much more aggressive style of Karate.

Dude, really? What you just wrote is just as laughable as all of these guys with GSP man-crushes who think Shields is going to get destroyed on the ground. Let me say it again a different way. GSP will not KO Shields. GSP will not submit Shields. Shields will take down GSP. If it turns into a ground fight GSP cannot win. HOWEVER, if it is predominantly a stand up fight, which GSP may be able to make it, Shields will lose.

I am confused as you say Jake Shields has wayy better jujitsu since shields has won 10 of his 26 victories by sub. No that dominate of a number in my opinion. Kind of a hot cold article. It was kind of like reading about how great and exciting of a job Obama will do in office and just to be let down in the ultimate end. I remember when GSP first caught my attention in his mayhem miller fight just because we were same size people. I thought he would be good but wow who saw the wrestling coming????

Jiu jitsu is Sheilds' only tool. He could not put on a striking clinic like GSP did against Kos, so is therefore likely to have more submissions as he only tries for that. That does not make him superior. If GSP fought only to get submissions I'm pretty sure he'd match the stats against most fighters.

Shields is now officially my 3rd fave fighter. He's already been champ in the area where gsp was afraid to go and has beat HIGH calibre fighters. Sure shields might not put on a clinic against josh koscheck in terms of striking, but who is koscheck in terms of who shields has beaten? Who is serra? Who is hardy?

    1. Out-strike Shields

    4. Out-cardio Shields

    5.Out-BJJ Shields

Items 2 and 4 are laughable to an indescribable degree. If this is a stand up fight, GSP will win. If this is a ground fight, there will be a new champ.

Very good article Anton, great analysis. Shields in my opinion has the better grappling pedigree as you pointed out and has been doing wrestling / Jiu-Jitsu way longer than Georges. Jake will have the edge in the grappling department.

However a very important point you mentioned as well, GSP has the striking edge, combined with his grappling arsenal, making him a much more well rounded and better fighter in my opinion.

With Shields training Muay Thai at Tiger's in Thailand and of course his grappling background he'll be ready for GSP. But I think "Rush" will be too much for the former SF champion at the end of the night.

I picture GSP and Firas and Jackson and Jean Charles and Brad Tate (ha ha) sitting around the strategy table in the war room: "Shields thinks we think we can outstrike him, but we know he's been boxing with Diaz brothers to be prepared so we'll plan on outwrestling him, but he knows we're thinking that, so we won't go for the takedowns, we'll go for muy thai, but he thinks we're going to focus on muy thai so we'll doublef*ck him and go with karate, but Shields isn't scared of our karate because he thinks he can clinch us up against the cage and use those single leg off balance takedowns, but we already know he's thinking that so we're not even training that, instead we think he'll have trouble making weight again and won't have much gas so we're going to focus on takedowns in the first three rounds just to tire him out, but we won't stay down and get caught in his jj traps, we'll just let him back up each time, but he knows we train with the Canadian olympic team and he'll be expecting that, so instead we'll catch him by surprise and use his own weapon bjj against him and he'll never see it coming, but he'll be expecting that......

Have a second look at the first round of the GSP vs. Koscheck 2 fight. It seemed to me that when Kos got GSP down in the later part of that round that GSP could not stop Kos from controlling him. The impression I get is that GSP seemed to want to get it back to the feet and couldn't.

Have a look guys and tell me if GSP looked vulnerable off his back and unable to get things back to his feet. Jake Shields will be focused on doing that to GSP each and every round (which maybe Koscheck should have done) and I predict that should Jake Shields get GSP down, GSP will not be getting up until the end of a round or worse, submitted. Shields being able to take down GSP means a UD for Shields.

P.S. On the flip side... If GSP does stuff Jake Shields take-downs (his TDD is really good) then he out strikes Shields to a UD.

Actually, it looked to me like GSP didn't care about getting up. he got taken down with seconds left in a round he'd already dominated. Why risk getting hurt by trying to press the issue of standing? It's not like he had Nam Phan's judges or anything.

I believe GSP will beat Shields in the same way he did Fitch. He will stuff his takedowns and beat him BADLY in the stand up. Shields will be lucky if he doesn't get KOed.

BTW, GSP should be fighting Kampmann in Shields' place anyway. And for all you who are going on and on about Shield's weight cut, he had more than enough time to not have to cut 25 pounds the day before weigh-ins. It is the fighter's responsibility to cut weight efficiently and effectively. Quit making excuses for Shields and face the fact that he is not THAT good. I'm looking forward to him being schooled by GSP.

If GSP tried to KO shields then he could just pull a maia/leites and fall down everytime he's hit, then we'll see if people say GSP should jump in his guard or not.

Stand up is an intricate part of MMA. I wouldn't have a problem if Shields took GSP down or if he pulled guard in close quarters, but to lay there ala Maia/Leites should be illegal in MMA.

I hope the ref is Herb Dean so he could disqualify Shields for refusal to engage. Then on top of that, I'd love to see Dana White give Shields his walking papers (like he did Leites) if he dares pull a weak stunt like that. If Jake Shields wants only to grapple, he should go to a BJJ tournament and stay outta MMA.

GSP may not have the better pure wrestling/bjj, but I think he has a better ability of bringing everything together in the octagon compared to Shields. Wrestling alone will not win this against someone like GSP. Hes just too smart for it. Shields is definitely a huge threat against GSP, but if hes going to pull it off, hes going to need some fancy GSP style strategy.

Jake Shields has won 15 fights in a row and for some reason he is STILL not getting the respect that he deserves from some of us on Lowkick. GSP is not invincible, therefore there's always a chance of him losing anytime he gets into the Octagon. Shields may not be a great striker, however I don't see him getting Ko'd anytime by GSP. If the fight goes to the ground, we will definitely have a new CHAMP!

Jake Shields does have a great grappling/wrestling pedigree but even if his grappling/wrestling level is above gsp's, the gap shouldn't be too great to the point that jake shields can completely dominate him on the ground. However, GSP' has a huge advantage striking against jake shields...AND we don't have to worry about GSPs chin that some people question. At this point, I can't see Shields winning, but of course its mma and anything can happen.

I've been a GSP fan for ages. I'm disappointed in his safe game plans. I want the GSP of old back and the only way he will come back is if he doesn't have that belt. Once he loses the belt, he can fight the way he used to and just go wild on everyone because the burden of being a champion and losing isn't on his back anymore.

Being a champion puts a safety lock on your abilities. You don't want to over commit and get KO'd or subbed. That's my opinion. When you are fighting for title contention you put it all on the line, go for those finishes, be aggressive to proof you are worthy and to hopefully get the finish as quick as possible.

you have to look at WHO Shields has beaten and I am not ragging on him but a lot of the opponents' style were either tailor made or there's an asterisk as to why he beat them, for example Dan Hendo had the worst cut of his life and now will be concentrating on the 205 division. Mayhem came in within 4 seconds of choking him out and that's closer to ending the fight than Jake had in the 25 minutes they fought.

I also think that he LOST to Kampmann, personally and Kampmann was a total ass for going for some positions in the 3rd round, to finish the fight instead of grinding Jake out...it was extremely frustrating to me and i'm sure to many other Kampmann fans/ fans who understand grappling...

I think for Jake to win... he HAS to dictate the pace of the fight... he will have to decide where the fight is going and keep it going it that direction for every round..

This is where GSP is King... his opponents that have had better striking (Thiago, Hardy) were scared to strike because every time they try to strike they get taken down...

If you look at GSP's win over Fitch, GSP was totally in control of where the fight was going... Shields needs to rush GSP, put him on his back and keep him on his back for all 5 rounds... but as long as GSP can dictate the terms of the fight - he will win virtually every time.

    My 0.02 cents...

I wish both fighters well, but I still can not see the merit in this matchup. The Henderson fight was a fluke - 8/10 times it would have been Henderson with a KO. Okami should have won hands down. The Kampman fight could have gone either way, but I would have definitely picked Kampman. Suprisingly with Shields, judges reward his control without striking or submission attempts. Most fighters get the opposite.

Comparing past opponents, Koscheck is a much better combination wrestler/striker. Shield's takedowns are generally either lunges or simply dropping down and getting a hold of something. Those approaches are very unlikely to work well against GSP.

GSP has great takedown defense and from his back can stand up, strike and work submissions with few peers. Shields with very limited striking from the top has little hope of making any progress on submissions. I think it much more likely that GSP finishes with a choke. Although I really think he will finish with striking from standup.

Shields control on top is impressive and has been winning him fights, but, GSP on top of him will be a much different story. GSP on top will throw lots of solid & accurate strikes to open up submissions.

I really like the wrestling and while most would probably not want to see it, I think a Fitch vs. Shields would be a much more interesting matchup than this. It would be impossible to do the slow motion control with him and would be a great ground war similar to BJ.

    Time will tell...

Since when are Dan Henderson and Robbie Lawler elite strikers?

Don't look for GSP to go for many takedowns during the fight, his best bet is to keep it on the feet. Shields is likely the worst striker in the UFC, and GSP is just a couple notches below Anderson Silva.

I expect GSP to use his jab a lot, and throw quite a bit of leg kicks. Nothing fancy, but GSP will win
