Fight Night 25: Jake Ellenberger TKO's Jake Shields in under a minute
Posted on September 17, 2011, 10:15 PM by Anton Gurevich"The Juggernaut" Jake Ellenberger continued his run inside the Octagon with an impressive victory over the former title challenger Jake Shields, as part of main event action of UFC Fight Night 25 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Right in the first exchange of the fight, Jake Ellenberger was able to tag Jake Shields with strong knee to the mid section followed by a knee to the face, which stunned the former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion. Smelling blood, Ellenberger unleashed hell with vicious ground and pound, as the referee Kevin Mulhall rushed in to stop the action at 0:53 minutes into Round 1.
Shields still continued the fight, although this time he was shooting on Kevin Mulhall, and not on Jake Ellenberger who was already celebrating his famous victory. Shields was clearly out, without any signs of coming back into the fight. Good call by Mulhall.
Jake Ellenberger scores his fifth consecutive victory in the UFC, spiced-up with 4 KO/TKO finishes. Ellenberger now finds himself in the mix for a shot at the UFC Welterweight title, with Rory MacDonald as potential opponent for the #1 Contender spot. Ellenberger could also face the winner of BJ Penn vs. Nick Diaz, looking to add another high-profile name to his amazing record.

Poor GSP, Hardy and now Shield's losses proved how overrated GSP is.
The fight was stopped early. Jake had a "grappler's chance" and has won a lot of fights against really great strikers including GSP by using it.
Shields has been in similar positions in fights before, though not quite as bad, but similar. The fight has gone on, and he has won. I'm not saying he would've won. I'm even happy the fight was stopped. I hate Shield's style from the kickboxing standpoint (I think it is a little boring). But even I can see why so many love to watch a guy who has created an extremely respectable fight record using what is essentially a strategy of "Close my eyes, cover my chin, get down and get this guy on his back before I go unconscious" when the tough gets going.
LOL Shields couldn't even takedown the ref!
That would be nice, taking down the ref and then trying to submit him
You may want to watch it again. Shields was out with his head on the mat right before he shot on the ref. Done and done.
I really hope these guys making him look like shit makes GSP start killing people again. He's got one of the best skill sets in the game, but lately everything's been looking bad except for his wrestling
GSP just lacks the killer instinct , hes not overrated
he has manage to stay Champion for a while in one of the most stack divisions.
So happy Jake Ellenburger got that win, i was expecting Shields to be to big and controlling Jake until a submission.
But this guy is a finisher! now that's how you fight!!
going in there for the kill not to score points.
You sound like an MMA Vergin.
The airtight logic implied in your statement is:
Ellenberger beats Shields in seconds, therefore, since GSP took 5 rounds to do it (with one eye) therefore:
a: Ellenberger > GSP
b: GSP = overrated
The following fighters were also unable to finish Shields:
Yushin Okami
Dan Henderson
Carlos Condit
Mike Pyle
Paul Daley
Martin Kampman
Robbie Lawlor
Mayem Miller
So are all the above fighters crap by your pellucid logic?
It is strange to see a Vergin so screwed up.
' )
WingChun? Is that you? Sorry... I saw "pellucid" and my first thought was "WingChun is back"
here come the gsp haters saying he's overrated!
I choose Ellenberger to win btu didn't expect that kinda of destruction. He is in my mind easily a top 5 WW.
I read somewhere he should fight Penn/Diaz winner for titel shot., I totally agree.
He has sick KO power and some nice TDD, brilliant Sub D... what else does he need?
I agree. I've long had my eye on Ellenberger and wondered why people never seemed to mention him when discussing possible contenders. He's already held the #7 spot in my top ten prior to tonight's victory, but he'll take a step up after tonight. I believe he possess the necessary tools to challenge and even possibly defeat GSP.. And for those who are now saying Shields is overrated, think again. Ellenberger has monstrous power and Shields was still not out, still not willing to quit... Even when he had no idea where he was. He'll bounce back.
Got him in top 5 now. Big, big win.
MMA math doesn't work.... but Ellenberger did something to Shields in 53 seconds thta GSP couldnt do month
MMA math doesn't work.... but Ellenberger did something to Shields in 53 seconds thta GSP couldnt do in 15000 seconds
Actually, that's 1500 seconds... but I get it. I think GSP could have finished Shields several times just like Ellenberger but he was playing it too safe.
It's actually 1500 seconds
Well I counted it out just to be sure
"The Jaggernaut Jake Shields continued his run inside the Octagon with an impressive victory over the former title challenger Jake Shields, as part of main event action of UFC Fight Night 25 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana."
Umm.....what?
They are talking about his clone
doppelganger ?
ty sir
Jake was far more aggressive against Ellenberger than he was against GSP...its a different fight. But yea, Ellenberger is a beast.
Elleberger simply DESTROYED Shields... i hope GSP took notes.. cause that's the way u ****ing finish a fight... if he didnt know... NOW HE KNOWS!
wow! and we thought this was going to be a long dry-humping boring fight.
Shields was not ready mentaly. Give him a break.
Really? u think that's an excuse.. if my father passed away 3 weeks ago and i jumped into the octagon... There is no way anyone would be whoopin' my ass!! I know that much... cause whoever faced me would be paying for all the Pain and Frustration... I'd turn into a Gorilla and take that shit out on them.. (not to mention my dad would turn 10x in his grave if i would loose.. lol)
true true. don't wanna take anything away from Ellenberger (cause he's got skills) but Shields wasn't 100% in the fight.
How do you know this tho? He never got a chance to fight at all. I'm a fan of Shields and send my condolences to he and his family, but what affect the loss of his father may or may not have had on him would be irrelevant in this case because he never got a chance to perform. I doubt his mental state had any impact on how much force his cranium could withstand.
If the tragedy didn't come to him, he may or may not have been caught the same way but I don't think saying Shields wasn't 100% in this fight is too outrageous.
I agree.
This fight barely got started. Ellenberger just cracked him, and finished him when he had the chance.
Honestly I think it hasn't been said yet and I'm surprised but the thing I was most impressed with in this fight was Kevin Mulhall's sprawl as Shields tried to take him down. Completely stuffed it, kept excellent control with the body clinch and had a very solid base. Shields' grappling is nothing to trifle with, regardless of state of consciousness.
GSP weakens chins, then guys just take sloppy seconds.
100%, 85%, 10%, WHATEVER. If you are going to fight people for a living wherever you are at is your 100%. If you are injured or have some other condition that precludes you from competing, there is no shame in waiting to fight when you are more able. But if you still insist on stepping in the cage, there are no excuses.
Ellenberger one that fight fair and square. And all of the GSP fanboys really should take a look at the fact that this is the second time that a former ww title challenger has been dismantled by guys lower in the rankings AFTER a drawn out no-finish GSP victory over them.
hardy fought gsp by default,we all know he had no business fighting for the title.
I don't know why gsp haters are being butt hurt, gsp beats shields as far as I'm concerned.
I'm not a GSP hater. I AM a hater of the GSP the tentative title defender though. We know he can FIGHT people and win. We have seen it in the past. This is a savage sport and we all know it. He needs to go out there and be a savage and dominate these guys that we know he is clearly superior to. Anderson Silva does it. Once he gets a bead on guys, he takes them apart. GSP has failed to do that in his last few outings. I think people need to get rid of this hang up of viewing fighting in such a civilized manner cuz that's just a bunch of bull-sheeit. Be athletic, and a good sportsmen and all that, but win the fight, not the competition.
It's good to have an opinion....
so each time gsp opponent are gonna get beat, he's overrated?
if gsp is overrated after his past opponent loose, anderson silva is a probably mediocre fighter than.
I think the referee single leg was one of the most awkward mma moments. See you on youtube...
checked wasnt there yet :S
called it!
is anyone really surprised at this result? Shields is soooo overrated!!!!!!!
