Edgar & Penn UFC 118 Rematch Official

Signed, sealed, and all but delivered, the lightweight title rematch between the champ Frankie Edgar and recently dethroned BJ Penn is official for UFC 118.

MMAFighting.com confirmed and reported that all signatures are in place and the two will do it again at TD Garden in Boston, in the main event of UFC 118.

Their initial bout took place in Abu Dhabi at UFC 112 and resulted in Edgar defying the odds and pulling off what some consider to be the biggest upset of the year.  After a closely contended fight the judges awarded him the victory via unanimous decision.

Calling the newly crowned champ an underdog heading into the match would be a gross understatement, but it was effective boxing and successful takedown attempts that would ultimately lead to him out-pointing Penn.  While the fight appeared much closer than the scores indicated, the final scores stand as 50-45, 48-47, and 49-46.

Once the decision was rendered, Penn's record inevitably fell to 15-6-1 with the loss.  While the former champ himself made no mention of any health issues, one member of his camp suggested a sinus infection during training may have had a detrimental effect on his preparation and fitness.

In light of the all things considered, UFC President Dana White felt an immediate rematch was in order, and now both parties have made it so.

In addition to the Edgar-Penn main event, the UFC is close to solidifying its UFC 118 co-main event.  While the final signatures remain absent at this point, the card is expected to feature the MMA debut of boxer James Toney against veteran Randy Couture.

i though edgar won that fight , but afer shofun vs machida 1

was sure the judges were going with penn just like machida 1

but no , witch was a good thing because frankie was marking the pace landed more strikes and the only takedowns

the rematch is pointless we all know bj will win but they should

give maynard the title fight and the rematch with edgar

while make bj fight a top 3 , that would make bj get more hungry and better instead of the instant rematch

Bj landed more strikes in the first three rounds, and also he stuffed like 90% of Edgar's takedowns, the fight was way to close to crown a new champ imo

Thank god! BJ needs to redeem himself. Edgar is awesome but I would bet the house on Penn this time. Stuff like this motivates him.

Winner and loser of this fight should fight winner and loser of maynard v florian, all exitement in the light weight right now.

I wouldn't call his takedown attempt successful. He only did 5 of them with one of them actually working, but he didn't do any damage when he got penn to the mat.

Yet I agree his boxing was effective even though he doesn't have ko power. Combined with his good cardio and speed, he managed to eek out a decision.

With all that said, I'm picking penn to win by a submission or edgar by another close decision.

I dont know if you were speaking in general or if that was aimed in response to me, but I just want to make sure you know that I only paraphrased this. I make sure to always remain unbiased when I type up an article to share with everyone. Any other way would be totally unprofessional.

Thats impossible as its just recently become OFFICIAL. Which the title of the article indicates. Therefore if you posted something it was probably back with the fight was proposed.

Regardless of who thinks who won the first fight the belt belongs to Edgar now, but I see Penn adjusting his game plan accordingly and taking it right back from him. BJ is too good a fighter and in my opinion will finish Edgar this time.

I see Bj taking back his title. Hopefully this loss pulled some of the lead out of his a## and made him train harder. Hes so lazy and its a shame because the boy has talent for days.

he never should have lost it. To me that fight was thrown away, not by BJ, but by the judges. People say Edgar won every exchange.....how can he do that when BJ hits him to, he didnt just stand there and take a woopn. Bj faught hard! I mean i can see it being a SPLIT decision MAYBE but edgar winning a unanimous with nothing to go by except a couple of takedowns over a 5 round fight.....idk i geuss i just dont understand the game????
