Ed Soares says Sonnen will get his chance to show and prove

Over the past several months Chael Sonnen has waged a one-sided war of words on Middleweight Champion Anderson "The Spider" Silva.  While the king of the 185 pound division has remained the central focus of Sonnen's verbal shots, others have been caught in the cross-fire, such as Silva's manager Ed Soares.

While Sonnen has used every outlet at his disposal to continue his verbal onslaught, he has been met with little response from Silva or his manager. However speaking to MMAWeekly Raido, Soares did tell of one incident at the UFC Fan Expo in May, where he felt his boundaries were tested by the Oregon native.

"I was walking back to the hotel and Anderson was signing autographs for I don't know, there was maybe 15, 20 kids around and their parents, and there's a crowd around him," Soares explained. "Chael walked by completely by himself with his manager, and he says 'go ahead, sign all those things because in a couple months nobody's going to want your signature. Nobody's going to want that."

Many question whether these displays of hostility are genuine, or are the actions of an opportunistic challenger, merely attempting to get inside the champ's head.  Either way, as  Soares recently noted, with just under two weeks remaining until UFC 117, it will be put up or shut up time for the Team Quest fighter.

"No one paid attention to Chael Sonnen," said Soares. "Before he started talking about Anderson Silva, have you ever heard of his name in the headlines? No. So this is the only thing that's getting him publicity. Congratulations, he found something that's going to get him some attention. I guess we'll see on Aug. 7, that's what's going to be great."

The middleweight title match will go down on August 7th in Oakland, California at UFC 117

Chael is a funny dude, he really is the bully back stage! he didn't lie about that. But Anderson is the superior fighter, I see him destroying Sonen unless all this trash talk got into his head and make lose his concentration like in the last rounds of the fight against Maya.

Agreed Anwar. I don't think it's going to be like with Maia though, because I don't think Sonnen will give Anderson the chance to do his impression of an angry 5 year old child. It seems like he's confident, I expect him to take it to Anderson (win or lose). Can he survive the 2-3 strikes he is going to have to take to get Anderson down? He's tough as nails, but that doesn't stop someone from losing consciousness. Don't know. Anderson will have no choice but to fight though.

He was not right that he's the bully backstage. How in the hell do you figure he "really is the bully backstage"? Have you ever been backstage? Are you telling me you actually believe the fool when he says Silva looks sheepishly at the ground when Sonnen walks by? Gimmee a break. This is the same guy that said, "I've never lost at middleweight when we all watched Maia hand his a-s-s to him.

I dont often agree with Ed Soares but on this one I agree 100%: Sonnen is using this fight to make himself popular. Its more than mind games now, the guy his clearly trying to make himself popular so he can boost his political career... I think it will backfire thou...

I believe he was predicted to win in Oregon, he dropped because he was going to lose money on some real estate thing.

I don't see that anything Sonnen is doing or saying is getting under Silva's skin. It might be pissing him off, but not getting under his skin. Silva is a consumate professional, and talk is cheap, real cheap. Sonnen needs to do what Sonnen needs to do to get himself mentally ready for this fight as well as physically, just as Silva does. If that means talking a mountain of trash then so be it, he still needs to beat Silva in the cage, regardless of what he says or does beforehand.

I am probably one of the few that believes that Sonnen will give Silva a hard time in this fight, unless he gets KO'd in the first minute or so. If he gets Silva to the ground and keeps him there it could be a very close one. I am sure he has a good game plan despite his run at a**hole of the year with all the trash talk.

I definitely agree that Sonnen will give Silva all he can handle.... with the wrestling. If Chael can take Silva down repeatedly and hold him there for 25 min, he can win. Thats the only way. If he does anything else he will lose.

9 out of 10 times. Then there is always that loud mouth a$$ hole who can back it up. I think this is a case of loud and tough but not tough enough.

Its kind of funny Ed talks about Chael trying to find his fame by talking his way to it. Because Ed I'm pretty sure you do the same. I'm sorry but I wish Ed would shut his mouth.

He is a manager, that's what HE does. Not what Chael does, he's supposed to promote his fight, not yelling at Silva while he's signing autographs for people.

Ed Soares' only claim to fame is he has latched onto the very same group that he is accusing Sonnen of using as a springboard. Soares is angry that someone else has the same idea and gameplan - but can also fight.
