Ed Soares: Anderson Silva can beat anyone from Welterweight to Heavyweight
Posted on August 2, 2011, 05:32 AM by Anton Gurevich"Anderson Silva has a chance to beat anyone in the world. I don't care what weight class you're in, you know. It's not an easy fight for anyone, whether it's heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight, and I believe if he really wanted to, he could probably even make welter if he had to. I don't know if he can or he would, but sometimes I believe he can." - Quote via BloodyElbow.com
Anderson Silva's manager Ed Soares shared his thoughts about Anderson Silva and the potential Superfight with reigning UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre. According to Soares, Silva is still interested to fight the French-Canadian, who will defend his belt against Nick Diaz at UFC 135. Soares revealed that Silva would fight GSP at Middleweight, but may also consider an option of a Catchweight bout between Welterweight and Middleweight. In his next bout, "The Spider" will square off against Yushin Okami, looking to extend his amazing record of consecutive title defenses to 9.

well, even though A. Silva and Machida are probably my 2 favorite fighters, ill make a crack on ol' Ed's comment....anyone has a "chance" to beat anyone. I know what he is thinking , that Anderson can beat anyone in that range, but he said he has a chance to...yes...so do I. Now...back up those claims with a move in weight class sometime, more permanently..up or down. I think GSP would offer him the most trouble in lower weight obviously, but there is the idea that he may be too big. GSP is explosive enough to take Andi down at will, but maybe not hold him, and 1 hit from Silva, it would be over. John Jones on the other had , would be a freakin awesome showdown , of technical skill. That I would like to see most, and frankly, I dont care who wins that one, I do like them both.
I agree with Ed a bit more than you do. I think Anderson would have a "chance" to be anyone welterweight (don't know if he could make that cut this late in his career though) to heavyweight. The difference in where I sit on this is I think he would actually be the favourite in any welterweight, middleweight or light heavyweight fight (maybe even against Jon Jones). Against some of the smaller heavyweights I would put him in as the better favourite as well, but eventually I think he gives up too much size against a heavyweight who can wrestle.
People are ****ing delusional , Ed Sores is and idiot and a thief.
Silva is one of the best fighters the UFC has seen, but to say that the Champion Above him ( Jon Jones) is not ready for Silva is just ignorant and stupid, there is a reason why Jon Jones is the Light Heavyweight Champ and Silva the Middleweight Champ
Silva to start fits more as a LHW but since he can make the weight he chooses the easy road of course like any other fighters would
yet he insist on fighting an even smaller opponent GSP ( as he was not fighting smaller fighters than him already), like if that would prove anything , is like GSP wanting Frankie Edgar to move to Welterweight to beat him and say his the best, that proves nothing
besides what anyone with a brain knows, the higher the weight class the superior the fighter would be , at least with the Top fighters in each division.
now about the Heavyweights im not even going there
that's just beyond stupid , Junior Dos Santos , Cain Velasquez that's 2-3 levels beyond Silva's.
I agree, I think you have to put Silva on even odds with pretty much anyone at LHW, I could see someone like Rashad giving him troubles because of his wrestling (I would absolutely love to see Silva v Rampage or Shogun though) but he wouldn't stand a chance against guys like Carwin, Velaquaez or Lesnar, just too big and could hold him down and pound on him for 3 rounds.
i dont see jones beating silva...yet...he has flashes of brilliance and has so far been relatively flawless but silva toys with fighters, jones looks like a less experienced version of silva. i reckon would be beat jones. id rather see silva agasint one of the heavyweight 'new breeds' like Cain or JDS. awesome hand speed, brute strength and the ability to not only hold him down but finish him from top position (sonnen managed to hold but he punches like a girl)
I would like to see a rematch with Sonnen before any of these moves are attempted to be made
I say ok lets see him do it then and quit f*cking around at middle-weight. Put him in their with Shogun, Jones, Machida, Cain, JDS
It would be nice to see the MMA community put as much pressure on A Silva to move up and face the champion in the next weight division.
The problem is that his BFF Machida holds the belt and he said that he would never fight him because of a long friendship.
Wait.... no Machida lost the belt.
Unfortunately, Silva's new best friend that he has probably only meet a few times,Jon Jones, is the champ so he won't fight him either because they are too close as well( Even though Jones is open to the fight).
Didn't this happen when Fihlo was supposed to be the best as well?
i actually seen a vid recently no lie where jon jones says he wont fight anderson silva there friends (LOL) ill try to find and post link here
Anderson has wanted the GSP fight for a loooong time and Georges has been running scared...and understandably so! AS went up to LHW and completely toyed with two of the top guys in that division at the time with highlight reel finishes from kung fu movies as the ending. Irvin: He caught the kick and delivered the perfect counter straight that started his demise. Forrest: The perfect fade-away....jab!?
The guy is amazing...get over it. GSP has not moved weight classes or has as many title defenses. Nor has he finished fights in such an impressive fashion. Anderson is the greatest ever at this point in time by a country mile. Only Jon Jones...or maybe Fedor (if he has an amazing end to his career) will come close out of this crop of fighters. Jones has a looooong way to go though.
Overeem has done well in terms of jumping between k1 and MMA...also switching weight classes and having success, but I would not put him in the same league with "The Spider"....
As skilled as he is, sometimes a man just is too big. Sure he could land something against a heavyweight but what happens if they take him down? Game over.
i think he will have a hard time in HW division, there are a lot of good wrestlers which is his weakness imagine cain, carwin but well never know it seems he adapt easily to any weight class just seeing from the griffin fight.
He most certainly has the skills too, but will he is a different story. I think a solid wrestler like GSP or Sonnen will eventually get the best of him. But lets all enjoy the ride while it last. He is the only champ out there right now that when he is on a card some shit is going to happen.
Silva is indeed an all time great but has started to look human and is at the age when physical ability can drop off the table very fast.
While Anderson has excellent technique, he still relies on his reflexes, which are the first to go.
While I think he could still beat anyone, I think Cain, Junior, J. Jones, and GSP would have just as good a chance to beat him.
Sonnen, Okami and maybe even Hendo could also still cause him problems.
No one stay unbeatable forever, right Fedor?
cant really see AS in the heavy weight division thats alot of weight to carry he does relied of his seed and reflexes which if he goes up like that both attributes would suffer but he obviously would gain some more KO power, heavy divisio just doest fit his style but Crane he beat Sonnen and hendo already and Okami was imo just an accidental DQ but he'll be on that list this year lol think Stan vs AS would be a good fight
I think Silva could compete at Heavyweight, but that doesn't mean he would win. I think he could hang with the strikers but not the wrestlers.
Which is why Hendo and Sonnen would have a shot. Beat someone once, sometimes they come back stronger, and those were the guys who gave him the toughest fight.
Okami didn't really beat him, true, but is a much better fighter than when he was 24 and a good wrestler as well.
I agree with Cain, JDS, Jon Jones, but Mr Pierre would have no shot against Anderson Silva. Anderson Silva would make a fool out of GSP. A.S has been Ed Soares's biggest cash cow for a long time now, therefore I have no problem with him saying what he said. That's exactly what he's supposed to do.
You're right, Soares is only doing his job, but that doesn't mean we can't call BS when he lays it on too thick.
There is no fighter on the planet who could make a fool out of GSP. Would he win? Not in a striking match.
But GSP has better take downs than Sonnen, and I bet you is almost as strong, and has better BJJ. And younger. And faster.
On the ground, reach is much less a factor, so from his back, Silva might struggle against GSP.
If they fought now, I'd say 50/50.
I can see what Ed is saying but i think it's going a bit over the top to say he could win fights from WW to HW. If he had problems with Sonnens wrestling ability how the hell would he deal with the likes of Velasquez or Lesnar, not to mention the speed and power of JDS' hands, it takes a long time to get reflexes that fast at HW, even at LHW i'm not so sure he would beat Bones as Bones is also a brilliant wrestler as well as being an awesome and innovative striker, We all know how awesome and deadly Silva is but he is human fgs and i think we'll only ever see him @ MW and LHW anyway, maybe WW if he decides to go down to face GSP, but who knows.......
Ed Soares, don't you know by now that you just need to just STFU.
I think he can move up or down and be successful more than anyone else. If anyone can it is him. Heavyweight, he would have to be very slippery if he was taken down to survive and find an advantage but in LHW I could see him contend for the belt easily. He is the best fighter but it would be extremely hard to stop the guys at heavyweight. I would love to see AS try HW just for the freakshow and if he managed to get that belt I would be blown away.
I believe he could take any one out standing but if he was taken down by Cain or JDS I believe he would struggle to get back up & get pounded out or TKO'd, that's based on his 5 round war with Sonnen.
He's the most gifted striker in MMA today & I believe his best match up or most exciting would be Jon Jones. It would be an amazing fight if standing for the majority. I believe Jones would cause huge problems for Silva with that massive reach advantage leaving him with only the counter striking options.
If it went to the ground it would be very interesting as Jones being a great wrestler & that seemingly being Silvas Achilles. I'd imagine Silva has been polishing up on fighting wrestlers though so who knows.
We can speculate (like I clearly am) but until these match ups happen nobody knows. But if Ed Soares is saying these things I'd wish Silva would take steps to back up the claims.
I think 170 for Silva is silly & pointless for him. GSP should move up to 185 if he wants that challenge. I'd love to see Silva take on a few heavyweights though. 205 seems very very comfortable for him & I think he should go for the title if Machida fails to reclaim it.
anderson will lose on the LHW division. jon jones will be a terrible match up for him. sonnen was for 20 minutes on top of him... would you imagine what will happen if jones is on top of him only for 10 minutes? he will really get smashed.
anderson will only fight on LHW if he fights guys like james irwin or forrest griffin. he likes to have the advantage and will never be like a bj penn or a dan henderson that go for big challenges. i also think that machida (i know they will never fight but i heard that machida usually controls him on practice) and a healthy shogun would have a good chance of beating him. and who knows maybe on a good day rashad could wrestle him to. if he beats okami and then wins a rematch with sonnen and then GSP he will have 2 fights left in his contract. then i will like to see him take a fight with a big name where he doesnt have an advantage!
His advantage really is his skill level he had a disadvantage with Sonnens wrestling, Vitors power, Dan Hendersons wrestling, Forrests size, and Maia BJJ but his advantages were just better than theirs. All those guys had an advantage if they could bring him there but they couldn't. It would be different if he had an advantage of steroids or something like Sonnen but his advantage is that he is just so good. I think Jon Jones would be a good fight and although he can lay down more damage than Chael he doesn't have the gas to be as constant as Chael was leaving AS more time to construct an advantage somewhere. I would love to see that fight but not when As is almost 40. Hope it happens soon if it does.
ur wrong they say silva controls machida and if he didnt KO jones he would definitely make him tap out silva BJJ is way better then jones!
You got to be joking, Silva BJJ is overrated , he is good but he is not that good , he is no Demian Maia or Werdum on the ground.
Jones reach would play a big factor , not to mention his greco-roman wrestling , Jones would throw Silva around like he was nothing and TKO him on the ground in no more than 2 rounds.
There is a reason why Jones is fighting Rampage
while Silva is fighting Okami , don't fool yourself Silva would never beat
any Top Light Heavyweight
Silva is easily a match for anyone in LHW. I think you're the one kidding with yourself. You can never count AS out in a fight and he is certainly more skilled than the boys up a rank.
Division(not rank)
this thread is Silva nut hugger central wow
i want to see silva vs cain than.
Then maybe he should stop playing it safe by fighting in the talent depraved middleweight division and step up and take on some of the worlds best at LHW. Silva vs Jones/Rua/Machida anyone?
Bout the smartest I've heard from Ed
silva is a great fighter and one of the best of all time but if he wants to be considered the michael jordan or muhamed ali of mma he will have to make some big challenges and stop fighting on the worst weight class by far. if he wants to be considered the best of all time he should go to LHW were there are a lot of great fighters. the only really great fighter that was near his prime that silva has fought is henderson. and he came to that fight just losing with rampage on 205 pounds so maybe he wasnt at his best.
all that bullshit that dana white and soares say about he is the best fighter ever is just not true. ill say it one more time anderson silva is great but if you want to be the greatest youll have to defeat legendary fighters. not guys like leites, maia, cote, irwing, griffin, leben, sonnen, okami, etc. those guys are good but will never be legends.
also silva has a big advantage on his division. not only on talent but also on size. he should be like penn that won 2 fights on LW and challenged GSP. anderson has won 14 fights!! and yet he doesnt want the challenge
1st @ thegreat how can silva bjj game be over rated when he has submitted some top guys who got black belts, RaimundoPinheiro,Travis Lutter sub by elbows, dan henderson,Roan Carneiro and sonnen but his bjj sucks! bottom line silva can beat jones standing and probably tap him out on the ground!!!
dude... sonnen and henderson arent black belts. and sonnen says that he has never trained jui jitsu!! and has been subimited more than 10 times.
and for corey. if you really think silva would beat brock and cain you are delusional. did you saw what brock did to mir? you should know that nowadays wrestling is a much powerful weapon than jui jitsu!! cain and brock wrestlers, jon jones wrestler, gsp wrestler, edgar and maynard wrestlers, dominick cruz wrestler. the only 2 champions on the ufc that arent wrestlers are silva and aldo and they do most of their damage standing up not grappling. cain and brock will take down the spider and if he tries an armbar they will chopp one of his legs away. these arent the gracie days!! now every good fighter has a decent bjj defense.
1st off its Portuguese not brazilian LOL!!! 2nd its his 2nd language lets see how fast u can learn portuguese !!!
That was a bold statement at his age. The fact that he ask Jon Jones for a " movie date"!? That was so gay if you are a fighter then fight the best. By then you could utter those sentence but by not asking to fight the best in light heavyweight and asking for a "movie date" that shows something else. Worst yet they watched "Broke back Mountain"
I would agree that Spider has a can beat anyone from WW to HW.. If this was 10 years ago. Gone are the day when "fighters" would get off the bar stool and get in the octagon now bigger fighters are more skilled and well condition athletes and the added advantage of heavier weight will come in to effect more dramatically. Look at all the champion in the UFC, Spider can fight and has fought at LHW but now he is happy with the MW belt, same goes for GSP he can fight at MW but he is just content with the WW belt up and down the weight level each champion can move up (with the exception of HW ) a division but don't why? because it's better to be the Biggest in your weight division than to be the lightest in the division above you.
This is just my observation.
