Donald Cerrone hopes Jamie Varner will be the "first death in MMA"

Former WEC Lightweight Champion Donald "The Cowboy" Cerrone continued his verbal onslaught on Jamie Varner, this time stating on TapoutRadio that he wants his WEC 51 opponent to be the first death in MMA. The interview was later removed from TapouTlive.com, but MiddleEasy.com caught the controversial quote in full:

"I hope my emotions have everything to do with this fight. I hope I'm [expletive] fired up and all I want to do is go out there and kill him and that's what's going to get me going in the first round. I want to come in that first round and rip his face off...I hope my emotions drive me, I fight better under emotions. Ask Leonard [Garcia], when I'm hot and some new guy comes in the gym and wants to throw down, that's when I do my best. So I hope my emotions take over and I just kill this dude. I hope this is the first death in MMA." (HT: MiddleEasy.com)

Cerrone's comments may remind what Frank Mir said about Brock Lesnar, which put the former UFC Heavyweight Champion under heavy criticism. Frank Mir later apologized for his comments, addressing Brock Lesnar, his family and MMA fans around the World. Luckily, Donald Cerrone did the same thing:

Here's another bit from Donald Cerrone's "ill will" coming to the fight against Jamie Varner. You can read the full interview at SBNation.com (props to WatchKalibRun):

What does your upcoming fight with Jamie Varner mean to you after almost two years? I know you spoke about how much it helped motivate you in your fights preparing for Benson Henderson.
Yea I mean this fight is two years in the making. This is all about redemption. I can finally get out there and do what I wanna do.

Are you worried about your emotions affecting you in this fight? Are you worried that because of the emotional nature of this fight you'll somehow stray from the gameplan?
I'm hoping my emotions just take over and that's what drives me to take over when I'm tired and sore. I want my emotions to just help me push through.

Are you worried about how he might react in this fight? Let his emotions get the better of him somehow?
I really dont give a shit about anything he has to do. This fight is all about me. It's about me dictating the pace and speed. Where the fight goes has nothing to do with him, so as far as what he's planning on doing? I don't care.

The fight between Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner will serve as the co-headliner for the anticipated WEC 51: Aldo vs Gamburyan fight card. The event will take place at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado this month on September 30th.

I actually liked Donald Cerrone as a fighter until I read this crap. I now put him in the same category as Frank Mir. A psychopath who must have hurt small animals as a child and has tendencies to do greater damage to human beings, making world headlines. I imagined this hick drives around in a beat up pick up truck with a shotgun in the rear window with his Confederate flag whipping in the breeze, which is all fine and dandy, but these remarks are inexcusable.

To say he got "caught up in the moment of talking trash" is bullcrap. He said it and meant it just like Mir did to Lesnar.

There is no place for it in MMA, period. What is heard in public is irrelevant.

I used to lke Donald.... had mad respect for the guy, but now I hope he looses by KO. To say anything that would hurt the growing sport that is putting food on his plate is stupid

Fighters should get fined for these idiotic comments. All it does is dirty up the sport.

Me expressing my view of how its not to be taken so literal is as relevant as you saying its a disgrace. Your name is as suiting as mine I see.

If you knew me you might see my point....

My choice of "name" is my sport "arena", my nickname, and my jersey #. It suits me just fine, especially for a website nickname. We all have our opinions, that's why we write comments. I've been involved in the fight scene for a long time now and "death" comments are taken very seriously in MMA and any other sport for that matter, especially from a professional.

Trash talking is one thing but using the word 'DEATH' while talking about your opponent is not that cool.

He always seemed like an arrogant prick and he is a dirty fighter, intentionally hitting people the the groin and things like that. Its funny that he says he does best when he throws down with some newbie, yeah maybe that's because they are new? But I guess that lets Donald feel like a big man.

For me personally it's a "no tolerance" issue, just like hitting someone after the fight is over. This sport has come so far in the respect department over the years and it is events like this that just give the critics more ammunition. Plus you wonder what really goes on in someone's head that would say something like that, whether he "retracted" the statement or not, or felt he was in the "heat of the moment". That's not a "heat of the moment" comment, it's an "I have real issues" comment.

    @CageRage

I think I have to agree that it has no place in MMA. I don't necessarily think he meant what he said but it definitely hurts the sport and his image. I'm glad he had the brains to apologize about the comment. He should have used his head before uttering those words.

hm... thats sad... nobody wants to see/hear that!!!

i think he should by punished bei the UFC.. i mean to say "i will kill him" is really ok.. everybody says that sometimes!?

but to wish somebody to die is absolutly ****in unprofessional and ****ed up!! a death would be devastating for the sport.. and come on who wants to see somebody really get hurt in the ring.. i mean i dont wish nobody to get badly hurt.. its a sport!!!!!!

I don't care what type of trash they talk. Just as long as they shut the **** up and put on a show at the end. So I'm expecting donald to be completely working for 15 whole minutes which is excluding just laying or circling, while throwing one jab 1 minute or more at a time.

If this were football and a D line said stuff like that no one would think twice about it. MMA is a sport to. This was just trash talk. He got riled up and said some nasty shit. That happens in sports all the time.
