Dana White talks Shogun Rua's refusal to fight Glover Teixeira, "worst ever" meeting with Brock Lesnar
Posted on June 9, 2012, 07:05 AM by Anton GurevichUFC President Dana White shared his thoughts about last night's action at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida, headlined by Demetrious Johnson's victory over Ian McCall in the main event of the night. Once again, White expressed his disappointment with the way Florida Athletic Commission handled the card, and the relatively low attendance number. White also discussed Shogun Rua's refusal to fight Glover Teixeira, revealing that the former UFC Light Heavyweight champ declared he would rather get cut, instead of fighting the 18-2 KO artist. UFC President also spoke about his meeting with Brock Lesnar, claiming that it was "the worst ever". White labeled recent rumors about Lesnar's return to the Octagon later this year as "typical internet bulls**t".

typical bullshit from dana trying to make shogun look because he said no to him but who the **** is glover texaira? guaranteed 90% of people on here never heard of him before he beat top 30 kingsbury. Atleast brandon Vera has a name amongst mma fans, there is no need for shogun who is top 10 to be fighting unranked guys
say it--don't spray it.
srsly
Teixeira has won 16 consecutive fights, with 15 finishes during that time. He could beat Shogun so its a win win for him but a lose lose fight for Shogun beating a tough but unknown guy. I can understand Sho's management thinking.
Now, beating Brandon vera who was cut months ago and came back is not gonna be perceived as the win of the year but Vera is a known fighter at least.
the reason you said Rua wouldn't fight him is right but for a different reason. Rua and most of 205 div knows who Glover is and is no joke. part time fans would question Rua's abilities if he lost to someone they don't know much about.
A win over an easier fight with a name people know > a hard fight with people don't really know.
not saying Vera is an easy fights I actually like his fights when he has his shit together.
Perfect breakdown LKD.
I really need to read all the comments before I say anything. nice break down better than my babble I wrote lol.
Brandon didn't get cut. The guy he was fighting tested positive for steroids, so in my book he didn't lose and apparently Dana White thinks so too because he gave him his job back.
how can u get ur job back if u werent cut in the first placE?
Shoguns record is awesome and unless a guy is highly ranked there is no point taking the fight until that fighter becomes a real title contender in his way.
Maybe Dana thinks shogun should be more of a UFC company man and accept any fight offered, but that would potentially put his record at risk. in Shoguns defence, he battled Henderson in a complete 5 round war and showed how much heart he has. he could have quit like other fighters and not come out of his corner.
Shoguns able to refuse fights because he has a name behind him. Lets see a newcomer try that stuff with Dana. Shogun faced beasts like Coleman in his prime back in pride and a whole heap of other legends so its a bit unfair to label him.
I would have liked to have seen shogun accept the fight however, its not always a dictatorship.
so what are you saying, that Vera is highly ranked??
I rank Teixeira higher than Vera right now
Vera has some decent wins to his name. He beat frank Mir and is probably ranked around number 10 in his division.
Not everyone will recognise his status because he had a bad outing with jones and then got stopped by the roid muncher.
He should have won against randy couture. I still think he has some gas in the tank...
He should NOT have won against Couture. Couture controlled the entire fight and was only unable to do real damage because every time the fight went to the clinch or the ground the know nothing ref seperated them almost instantly.
I also want to know what the hell is happening with brock? Dana said it was the worst meeting ever.
Brock probably came back and said he will only return if he gets paid 10 x more than anderson silva.
How can a meeting go so bad when he was supposedly just coming for a chat. Dana has indicated he will have him back so there must be an issue with either money or who he would be offered to fight.
Did anyone else pick this up in the interview>? Dana Says in talking to Shogun people he will tell it how it is. "If you don't want to fight someone then don't tell me cause I will tell it like it is."
Ok, now Brock has a meeting and he won't say anything other then "it went bad"
UFC needs Lorenzo or Joe Silva to do the deals. Get Dana out.....UFC could be much better.
I was thinking the exact same thing
Dana would throw is woman under a bus to make himself look better. He cant handle hearing "no" anymore. I wouldnt be surprised if many fighters are claiming injury now to get out of fights they dont want, now days Its the safest way to say "no"(look what he just did to Shogun)
The whole Brock thing was probably because Dana didnt get his way. If you dont want to hear the internet BS quit putting a target on your back and constantly talking sh** like people on the internet cant read between the lines. Also mentioning things then answering them vaguely only adds to speculation from your beloved internet friends Dana. Your starting to look like a serious D-Bag Mr. White.
Reading between the lines of Bisping's interview with MMA Heat, it's clear as sun that he has zero interest to fight Boetsch...
I agree, Tim is a big threat to him. Bisping doesnt do too well when heavy hands corner him and let punches fly. Tim is just that kind of guy to do it. It does seem Bisping was squirming a bit in that interview.
Reading the comments above I'm fascinated by how some people are surprised by Dana's comments. He's always been like this! Plus he's all pumped up because they bombed in Florida. He is the model of consistency and that model is that of a controversial figure head.
Texeira is a Beast, and not very known name yet.
A nightmare matchup for any top ranked fighter that has more to lose than gain. None wants to fight this guy, none top ranked.
Dana is a master of telling how is, but not always all of how it is. While I think it is possible Shogun didn't want the fight, it's also possible there is a reason.
Notice how Dana never mentioned the reason why Shogun didn't take the fight? Teixera is Brazilian, so maybe there's some kind of connection between them.
Thats just dumb, not wanting to fight another brazilian. And Ill put up money that thats not the reason.
Imo there is absolutely no way Shogun is scared of glover, this is either a friendship thing or a respect thing. Shogun is one of the greats and should only fight other house hold names at this point, if he drops so far down the ranks that he is fighting no names then maybe he feels he'd rather hang it up, guarantee it has nothing to do with Glover.
Dana expects fighter's to keep their negotiations secret--but he blares out whatever he wants to about a negotiation if it suits him. eg: Anderson Silva money.
By now, hardcore fans should notice the pattern in UFC matchmaking. When a fighter is famous, but not a title contender--and he is near retirement--the UFC matches him up with a rising star.
If the old fighter wins--then his career and marketablility is extended--if he loses--his mojo passes to the new rising star. It's a win-win for the UFC. When a fighter like Shogun, who has fought the best-of-the-best trhoughout a long career does not want to take a fight--he should have that right. He shouldn't be threatened with being cut.
When you are a fighter from a poor background with no money you accept any fight no matter how dangerous the opponent. Look at the ultimate fighter, guys taking 3 fights in four weeks
However, the game changes when you become a champion and have millions in the bank, drive ferraris, own gyms etc.
Suddenly Dana's job becomes alot more complex trying to promote fights because these guys are now in a position to pick and choose their opponents because they don't need to worry about feeding their kids.
I still think Dana does a pretty good job getting fights made, but when he doesn;t you can see how much it pisses him off.
Its the name of the game though Code, when Shogun was a young pup in his fight career, he had to build his name off the backs of the veterans, The older guys let you make a name off them, and you are suspossed to return the favor to the next generation of young pups, when you are at that stage.
I am not against the idea of matching veterans with rising stars--but I believe that Shogun has paid his dues--and does not have to accept any fight with a relatively unknown fighter.
I am not certain of the financial details--thanks to UFC secrecy--but if Shogun gets a PPV cut--then he wants an opponent who will maximize that PPV reward.
I was a bit pissed to hear that Dana threatened Shogun with being cut if he refused the fight. Remember, Shogun had agreed to fight Thiago Silva, but Silva pulled out due to injury. This was not his fault.
You think the Maple Leafs can just say I dont want to play against Boston. No they go with the schedule given to them.
People come to the ufc to fight the best, then once people know who they are and they cant win the belt they just want to fight someone they can beat??
I dunno why Shogun said no cause he had tons of awesome fights but what I do know is that Vera will be an easier opponent and is nobody special so saying he didnt want to fight an unknown just doesnt hold up.
Vera has a long history in the UFC so he definetly isnt an unknown.
But ask twenty people on the street, some will like vera others won't.
The reason why the meeting went so poorly with Brock is because he's a big DICKHEAD!!
