Dana White says he changed his mind, Gray Maynard will rematch Frankie Edgar

White did not appear for the post-fight presser, sending the UFC Vice President Craig Borsari instead. Borsari announced (via Dana White) that Anthony Pettis is still fighting Frankie Edgar for the UFC Lightweight title. But now it looks like there's a change in plans

Here's what Dana White told Yahoo! CageWriter's Kevin Iole:

"I hate to talk about what we're going to do with future fights at a press conference when a card has just ended," White told Yahoo!'s Kevin Iole.

"I had the whole Pettis thing with the belt on my mind and so I said, 'Yeah, Pettis gets the next shot.' But then when I thought about it more, how can I in good conscience not give that shot to Gray Maynard? It's a no-brainer. He came in there and he fought his ass off and he deserves that rematch. That was a great fight and they deserve to do it again."

The news will upset Anthony Pettis, who will now have to wait at least 6 months before getting a title shot. Also, this means the top ranked UFC Lightweights Jim Miller and George Sotiropoulos are losing their opportunity to fight for the title in 2011, as chances for UFC Lightweight belt to be defended four times this year are close to zero.

Totally right man, after that first round Maynard got some shots in but never did anymore damage. Frankie however, kept his pace and attacked/landed and the other thing I wanted to point out is that Frankie actually scored takedowns while virtually ALL of Maynard's takedowns were stuffed. I was frustrated with this decision, a split decision would have probably been more acceptable.

i thought maynard won the 1 -3 -5 round! maybe the 5 round was a draw, but after the first round ( 10 -8 ) i think maynard desrves the belt!

I think Edgar clearly won the 5th round. A draw was the right call imo.

I think so too. Edgar got 2, 4, 5 and Maynard got the first 10 8 and the third.

not sure how anyone can say one or the other definately won that fight! i think for title matches there should be a clear winner to give a decision otherwise a draw and rematch. as the fight was going into the 5th i literally couldnt call the fight and thought one of them needed to finish it to garuntee the win.

great fight cant wait for the rematch, cant see that one going to points!

The only way I could see Maynard winning was if he got a 10 7 in the first. Do they do that in MMA.

A draw was the right result. On points I had Edgar winning it 48 - 47, but overall a draw is pretty accurate. Neither deserved to lose that fight.

That's how I had it too so I can totally understand the draw but I would have given the fight to Edgar. I'm not disappointed about getting to see it again though.

Everyone says "no question" but clearly, there is a question or else we'd all agree. But can we all at least agree that the judge who scored it 48-46 Maynard was completely out of his ****ing tree?? Amirite?

I definitely think that it all comes down to the fifth round because in my eyes, the first was very clearly a 10-8 for Grey, followed by 2,3, and 4 all solidly going to Frankie. Seriously, someone give me a reason why Maynard won the third round, other than just doing the Grey and insisting that he won the round, no explanation required. Frankie moved better, landed more strikes, shrugged off the takedowns and landed as many power shots. Maynard just lit it up toward the end of the round, but I always watching the clock for amount of time dominated in a round and I give 3 to Frankie no question.

So with 3 going to Edgar, the last round is the only question mark. Super super close, but giving it to Maynard and calling the draw seems like the only fair thing. That was one of the closest fights ever, certainly the closest title fight I've ever seen, and anyone who says "______ OBV WON THAT!" is bias toward whoever they are yelling about winning because no on obviously won anything about that fight.

Feel bad for Pettis but I'm stoked on a rematch. And Frankie Edgar is the toughest little bastard in the UFC, that guy proved he has the heart of a champion and he could be around for a long time.

what you're all forgetting is that pettis was promised a title shot against the WINNER of the fight. There was no winner so the only logical thing to do is have a rematch and either let pettis fight another contender like sotiropolous or just wait till he gets his shot. These guys were closely matched and I actually believe a draw was the right decision, so let them go at it again.

I call it a draw; I never said Gray didn't deserve a rematch. It's the only logical course, unfortunately, basically a continuation of this fight, but that doesn't change the fact that it sucks balls for Anthony Pettis.

I completely agree with your assessments here. Like you said, it really came down to the last round if you give Maynard a 10-8 first round, which is logical. The only thing I disagree with is why they gave that last round to Maynard? If anything, the last round was a draw, which would have left Edgar ahead one... Anyway, at least they didnt award the fight to the wrong fighter.

Oh and as you also said, the judges are still questionable here. How can one score the fight so heavily in one direction and then the other as heavily in the other? Not saying who was wrong or right or complaining about the draw, but its just odd.

I only watched the fight once, and when i judge it I try not to over think it and just let the impression I'm left with do the judging.

I had Maynard winning rounds 1 and 3, and Edgar winning rounds 2, 4 and 5. Rounds 3 and 5 were very close, but I actually thought the third should go to Maynard based on 2 things. The striking was very close, but I think Maynard landed the more significant shots, and he landed more take downs as well. The last goes to Edgar because again like the 14/15 rounds he has fought while champ he had a slight striking advantage + octagon control, movement, aggressiveness ect. Add to that the fact he stuffed all Grays take downs and you have Frankie up 3 rounds to 2. The deciding factor of the fight was that first round. I have seen alot of 10-8's, but I can't ever remember seeing a 10-7. IMO if that round would have been a 10-7, I would have been fine with it. Look at some 10-8 rounds like Silva vs Sonnen Rd.1 and Brock vs Shane, and there is a good case that Rd.1 in this fight was more dominant. He dropped him 5 times which is unheard of. Although, you have some judges that scored the Sonnen vs Silva and Shane vs Brock Rd.1's 10-9, so its just a simple discrepancy with the judges. All in all, can't complain about the draw.

I really think they should start doing half points or awarding more 10-8, 10-10, and even 10-7 roudns. This isn't boxing where there are 10 or 12 rounds, EVERY round is extremely crucial to the outcome of the fight. You can go down the list of all the 10-9 rounds on any given night and see a wide range of dominance.

I guess overhand right is right but I think Frankie leaves the cage as champ, Pettis should get the opportunity to take it away from Frankie just like Gray had the chance.

he shouldn't be considered champ though because he didn't defend the belt. a rematch is the only way to settle who the champion is.

My previous reply was directed at GeorgeR...

As far as Overhand's comment, I think to say Edgar is not that champ is ridiculous lol... He earned that title when he defeated the last champ, BJ Penn, twice. This fight went to a draw, the champ is still the champ when that happens. I sense a little bias...

i'm not a fan of either fighter so i'm not biased to either one.

and i just don't agree with the whole 'to be tha champ you have to beat the champ thing' because there is just as much obligation on the part of the champ to beat the contender to prove he still deserves to hold the belt.

edgar didn't win, so he didn't defend the belt. just my opinion.

because i'm a fan of mma and it was a fight that interested me and it was a title fight that had big implications for the ufc's lightweight division. i don't have to only comment on articles about things that i love, anything mma is interesting to me.

in fact if anything i believe edgar is highly underrated by the general mma community and is rarely given the respect he deserves. i can appreciate someone is a good fighter without being a fan of them

He's lucky the fight wasn't stopped in round one when he got his ass beat over and over again. There were three times it could have easily been stopped. Shame on Gray for not finishing but clearly Frankie did not win that fight.

Frankie Edgar is a helluva champ...definitely one of my top 5 fav fighters now...but to be fair to most fighters i think it was a draw...round 3 was close but i give it to maynard as he landed more damaging strikes and had a bullshit takedown....round 5 was definitely Frankie...he was pot shotting maynard all day; maynard did return fire at the last minute mark so i can see why ppl thought maynard won the fight....

much ups to frankie...not even GSP came back from that

I thought a draw was fair, but then watching it back and scrutinising the scoring, Edgar won the last 4 rounds clearly. Anyone who thinks different should watch it back also and score each round from the very start of the round. You will edgar outstrikes Maynard in every round (apart from the first of course) by a considerable margin. In the 3rd Edgar has 3 minutes of landing punches and kicks before gray landed anything back. A couple of hard shots late into the round no way won it for him. the 5th Maynard threw alot of leather and missed with practically everything he threw.

Definately edgars fight points wise, but I think a draw is fair because they beat each other up a similar amount overall.

I judged the fight this way:

    1st Round: 10-8 Gray Maynard

    2nd Round: 10-9 Frankie Edgar

    3rd Round: 10-9 Gray Maynard

    4th Round: 10-9 Frankie Edgar

    5th Round: 10-10 Draw

    Result: 48-47 Gray Maynard

I'm comfortable with the Draw result. In some ways I think that Gray Maynard let that fight get away from him due to cardio. I think that will be the biggest adjustment that he makes for the rematch. Expect Gray to maintain a more intensive pace and no "got to catch my breath" 2nd round that lets Frankie back into the fight.

My prediction: Gray Maynard wins the rematch buy having better cardio than he did in this fight.

maynard has the power to put Edgar bang in trouble, and that could happen at anytime in the rematch. But edgar also outclassed Maynard for nearly 20 minutes of this fight so if he can improve to make that 25 minutes and avoid the big shots from Maynard, i see a convincing win for Edgar.

I pray I haven't just jinxed him writing this.

You can look at the fight 2 ways. What if Frankie didn't get rocked? Would he have been more dominant throughout the rest of the fight? Or, Did Gray punch him self out a bit trying to finish Frankie?

Does anyone have Grays reaction to Dana's White mind change. I think its the right thing to do. Just looking at that interview you could see in Gray's eyes he was PISSED. I'm glad he's getting his rematch. Its going to be good. No leaving it up to the judges this time, but he should have finished Frankie when he had the chance.

The Question is why wait for 6 months for a rematch? Lebman fought within 14 days of his match against Aaron Simpson then fought Akiyama and all this TUF matches are not months apart so I don't see the reason why this fight could not happen in 4 months time?
