Dana White drops the bomb: Nate Marquardt will no longer be with the UFC (Updated)

UFC President Dana White released a video where he announces that the former UFC Middleweight Title challenger Nate "The Great" Marquardt has been cut form the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Only a few hours ago it was announced that Marquardt was "not medically cleared" to compete in the UFC on Versus 4 main event against Rick Story, who will now face Charlie Brenneman instead.

UFC were in the same situation with Alessio Sakara pulling out of his UFC 122 bout against Jorge Rivera due to illness, but now it looks like there's more to the story.

Update:

E. Casey Leydon of AllElbows.com (Combat Sports Video and Photographing Company) says on his Twitter (@ekc) account that Nate Marquardt was going to make weight "absurdly easy". Leydon filmed Marquardt in Pittsburgh throughout the preparations for the fight against Rick Story, and says that the video of Marquardt's weight cutting process will be released soon.

Well, looks like it's something other than the weight cut. Stay tuned to LowKick.com for official statements from the UFC and Nate Marquardt's management.

    Just click the link.

But basically, a pissed off looking Dana White says "...not only is [Nate Marquardt] out of the main event on versus, but he is no longer with the UFC." He didn't offer any explanation.

surely it cant be that he didnt make weight, to get cut. He was so confident about making weight. There must be more to it than that.

Conspiracy theory, Marquardt wast actually traded to Strikeforce for Nick Diaz lol. But seriously this is really messed up, it's not like Marquardt is some new comer to the company and we've never heard of any problems with him, I can't see this being only about a weight cut.

No, he just didn't get medical clearance to fight. i.e. he didn't pass the physical. However, nobody has said why yet.

They wouldn't call it failure to medically clear if it were failure to make weight. It is probably a PED in the urine sample. Who knows though.

if you think about alves. he missed weight against hughes, then failed weight against fitch. he lost 20% of his fee against fitch and i think they had to ask the other fighter if he would still fight. dana warned him not to do it again but he wasnt cut for it.

I was never a fan of Nate, especially following that terrible fight with Yushin Okami, however I think this has gone overboard. It seems Uncle Dana may be using Nate as an example - the UFC is the premiere MMA organization and you have to act professionally and do your job. Either Nate did not make weight, or he was caught with illegal substances - either way he is being ban-hammered.

Knowing what we all know now, how is it over board? For all we know, Nate killed a midget before the weigh ins and thats why hes out of the UFC (because killing midgets is frowned upon). My suggestion is to hold any judgement on Dana or Nate until the reason for his removal is made clear. People seem to be getting ahead of themselves. I don't recall TOO (because I'm sure there has been at least one case) many scenarios were Dana has kicked people out for no good reason.

They wouldn't call it failure to medically clear if it were failure to make weight. It is probably a performance enhancing drug in the urine sample. If that's the reason, then Dana is by no means being too harsh. I'm sick and f'ing tired of all these fighters cheating with PEDs in the UFC! The time has come for the hammer to drop.

I watch the UFC because want to see fights that showcase who has the best MMA training methods and talent in the world, not who has the best pharmacist. The current punishments aren't enough. Fighters keep getting caught all the time it seems.

And by the way... did you see how slow Carwin was against JDS now that he has stopped taking roids (due to the investigation that found his name on a dealer's list). Dropping the roids is what made him drop the weight. That whole diet thing was just a way to make it less obvious. I like Carwin as a person, and I used to root for him. But I was glad to see him look slow and get beat up by JDS. I now believe his dominating performances in the past were due in large part to his pharmacist.

You don't know Carwin "as a person." Your a bunch of characters on a computer screen.

This is what's wrong with the 'net- people take themselves and there 'net lives WAAY too serious.

I can, and do, know a lot about him as a person from watching interviews, reading about him, and such without knowing him personally. So don't get your panties in a bunch. What I'm saying is I like Carwin, but I hate the fact taht he 'roided. I'm glad it caught up with him. I'd hate to see a UFC champ with 'roid trouble. It would tarnish the sport even more than roids have already tarnished it.

True, it may not be overboard. I probably should have said it simply is very harsh punishment, I'm sure Nate really messed up to deserve it.

@ Stiks. Come on, man. Midget-killing isn't that bad. I think Catholics used to practice that on St. MidgeMurder's Eve. Seriously though, that was a hilarious post, but also a good point. It'll be interesting to see this story develop.

I get that Nate put the UFC in a tough spot by forcing them to find a replacement this close to the fight, and I don't know the details behind him not being cleared to fight. He may have failed a drug test, or failed to disclose something that he knew about ahead of time.

If it is not one of those things, or something similar, then this is an unnecessarily harsh punishment. Shit happens.

Holy hell, I never saw that coming.

It's the same deal with Karo Parisyan, drop out of the fight the day before the weigh-ins, you'll get dropped from the UFC. But Nate was always a nice guy, he never did anything to hurt the UFC.

Maybe Dana's just having one of his diva moments and he'll re-sign him in under 24 hours like he did Jon Fitch.

don't think it was the cut that got him at all because if that was the case then he ould just get docked half of his pay and the fight would still go on...well maybe...

He probably was way over what he had to be to make weight that day and it wasn't possible for him to cut that much in one day

I can only think of a few things.

    1. Not even close to making weight. If he was still miles over weight and had no hope of being able to cut, then White may cut him. I know he really hates people who can't make weight.

    2. PEDs. Failed a piss test. Usually these are done after fights though so I don't know. People who get caught after fights are usually kept on the roster, but maybe because he has to pull out of the fight, then White is pissed.

    3. Something he knew would come up, and didn't disclose it. Maybe something like an injury that has been niggling him for quite some time, and instead of bringing it up, decided it would hopefully go away by the time the fight goes on. Could possibly be something like Staph aswell.

everybody is getting injured and two of my favorite fighters, gina and nate failed medicals. And now nate is fired.

I'm really fed up with all those injuries. What next, GSP or Anderson silva are injured for their fight.

It"s awfully strange. Dana loves to talk, so I suspect there could be some legal issue involved.

People have done all kinds of crazy/ illegal things and not been cut, Anthony Johnson routinely had problems with weight. We all know about Chael's battles.

In the past, I can only recall Dana doing something like this when he thought the image of the UFC was in jeopardy.

Dana is a tool, and oxymoronic as well.

White said Karo would never fight for the UFC ever again... guess what? He's back. No thanks to Dana or management, Parisyan fought off addiction by himself.

"We care about all our fighters... They're like family to me... If a fighter is struggling with anything, we are there for them, no matter what."

Unless Marquardt was accused of Murder or Grand Theft with a weapon, or if he choked out somebody in management, there's really no excuse for this action. Hell, it's still unknown why he cut Duffee.

That's the truth. Dana's so flimsy, he's constantly eating his own words. He didn't help Karo with his painkiller addiction, instead he trash talked him over twitter. He's always flipping a bitch switch and ranting about people that bad mouth the UFC or refuse to sign with the UFC, like Fedor and Arlovski.

I wouldn't be surprised if he re-signed Daley to be honest.

And it's inexcusable to cut Nate like that. Like you said, unless he's currently in prison for homicide, there's no reason he should be cut so recklessly. I have a feeling Dana's gonna be taking a lot of heat over the next few days.

As much as I dislike Dana, he may be doing the right thing for the sport. Too many guys have been caught for PED already: Leben, sherk, sonnen to name a few. I'm sure there are many more who simply havn't got caught yet. It's gonna ruin the sport, in the long run, to labelled as being lazy when it comes to diciplining cheaters. If Dana gets serious about dealing with the problem he'll do mma alot of good moving forward.

I hope it is not PED, because this will be another black eye to the UFC and MMA. I think lot of MMA fighters are inconsistent because of PED.

I have strange suspicion on Overeems performance, for last weeks Strikeforce event that Reem was not the same fighter. I'll bet least 80% of MMA fighters are on PED.
