March 12th 2011 will be a day remembered by Mixed Martial Arts fans as the day ZUFFA purchased Strikeforce. From that day forward many of us salivated at the thought of all the dream match ups that could be possble because of the recent purchase. The fantasy of seeing one of Strikeforce's elite champions taking on one of the UFC's champions is now over. UFC President Dana White announced on his Twitter that the Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz will be taking on the UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 137 on October 29th!

Will we see more Strikeforce vs. UFC fights in the near future? Will this fight be a welterweight title unifier? Keep it locked here on Lowkick.com for all the breaking news!

Update:

Earlier today UFC President Dana White announced via Twitter that Strikeforce Welterweight champ Nick Diaz would, in fact, be next in line to challenge Georges St. Pierre for the UFC 170-pound strap.  In the time since, new details have emerged regarding what this will mean for the future of the Stockton Bad Boy, as his manager Cesar Gracie spoke with both MMAFighting and USA Today about the new contract and the upcoming bout.

Here is what we've learned:

• The contract was signed by Diaz yesterday and was delivered to ZUFFA today.

• The match-up with St. Pierre will be the first of an eight fight contract with ZUFFA, which will allow him to compete under both the UFC and Strikeforce banners.

• Diaz will not be permitted to compete in professional boxing under the new contract, but has been compensated for agreeing not to box under the terms of his previous contract.

• The UFC had previously considered scheduling St. Pierre vs Diaz for a Canada card, but ultimately decided on Las Vegas, which was the preferred location for Gracie.

• Though the new contract allows Diaz to fight for Strikeforce, Gracie believes this will only occur if he loses to St. Pierre.

• Gracie is confident that Diaz will counter St. Pierre's high level wrestling by utilizing  Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

this is going to be so one sided.

how can anyone see this going any other way than gsp winning with superior wrestling?

only chance diaz has is if he catches him with a puch before it goes to ground i.e. a punchers chance

he lost three in a row to wrestlers in 2006 and the only reason he has been unbeaten since in because he hasn't faced another wrestler since then.

like im a fan of both diaz and gsp and i dont think yu shud count diaz out espicailly considering gsp last couple fights havent been very great and diaz always gives it 100 percent

think about it whens the last time anyones pushed gsp or actually threatened him

diaz is danger on the feet and on the ground so this will be interesting

GSP's last fights were impressive, maybe not the exciting barn burner u might hope for but still its good. josh and Jake both tried to stand with him and they got no where. And according to all the hype about jake he was supposed to be the world killer that could knock off GSP, but that just shows u how gulible some fans are. Diaz just dosnt have it in my opinion, Ceasar JJ or not dosnt make him a good contender in my book.

Generally when you have to say that someone's advantage is "giving 100%" that means that they don't have a whole lot of advantages. I agree that Diaz is scrappy and he has shown to be dangerous wherever it goes, but he has pretty poor wrestling, GSP has elite wrestling and top control, and GSP has been virtually unsubmittable since the Hughes submission ages ago. I can't even remember him even being threatened by submissions in recent memory. Taking no other factors into that fight that should be enough for GSP to be a heavy favorite, even though there are other aspects that lean in GSP's favor.

All you GSP fan boys are dumb. Look how scared he was of Shields ground game! Diaz's is just as good. Cyborg was a black belt and he got subbed 15 secs from the fight hitting the ground!! Diaz has stand up and way superior jiu jitsu.

thank you, i dont understand how anyone could think this will be an easy fight for gsp. im canadian but cmon gsp was scared of shields ground game, diaz grapping is just as good if not better than sheilds, his stand up is better than gsp's, and he can take 3 times the amount of damage. as long as diaz can keep it standing gsp wont be able to hanlde his style of boxing.

How was he scared of Shields ground game??? He took him down!!! He beat his ass for 5 rounds, which includes the standup indefinitely, and he took him down what 2 or 3 times? He wasnt scared apparently or he wouldnt have taken him down....

So GSP is scared f Shields gg cause he didnt go to the ground. Well that makes sense cause GSP handled the fight standing up. Shields was trying to find a way to improve, so he ried the ground. Didnt work cause GSP is actually SMART!!! NO point in going to the ground if u dont have to you know. So GSP wasnt scared he just wasnt dumb.

Interesting to see. I think Nick will have a wake up call from one of GSP's jabs. Once he feels it, he will be like, damn, let's go the ground and hump! GSP will be like, "pfft, take me down then, I'll just pull a Matt Hughes and neutralize Gracie JJ with superior wrestling. Plus look at my abs!"

GSP vs Conduit wouldnt be a bad fight I dont think. As far GSP vs Diaz, I think the only edge Diaz has over GSP's previous opponent is that he wont be scared of GSP in any sense. He wont be scared to engage GSP and bring the fight. Kos didnt do a bad job with it but Diaz has more skills than Kos.

Ok here is where I don't get some of the talk here. We have extremely knowledgeable peeps here codemaster, Edub, etc.

But even though you guys understand your stats and info do you know how matchmaking works? It has almost nothing to do with who should fight based on actual standings. You can't have it both ways. You either do it with tournaments or a guy who wants to generate the most money decides based on people at least in the range of talent as the champ. Diaz is well within that. Even though he may not bethenmost deserving.

You can Bantor all day about fair but it is not that way. It's matchmaking. If you want to have a beef it's in how fights are decided not who fights who.

My other point. Diaz is a better fighter than Jake shields. I will willingly debate technique and you can being up fights from 5 years ago Diaz was in. Most of you commenting were in their early twenties or highschool than. Have you evolved in 5 years?

GSP is diversifying too much. He hasn't faces a striker like Diaz ever. A cardio machine that won't tap out from exhaustion. The only way I see him win is by decision playing super safe. Who has he stood with who has good stand up?

Bj Penn. Terrible cardio. Especially at WW. Gassed out and basically gave gsp the win. Who else? Gsp was tkod by a guy with average stand up. Diaz has only been decisioned or stopped by the ref for blood in his eye.

Is gsp a heavy favorite sure. Does Diaz deserve the shot... definitely by ufc standards. They use a matchmaking system. You can argue all day about who deserves what. We haven't seen Diaz fight a wrestler in a long long time. That doesn't mean be won't fair well. It's an unknown. Bringing up fights from 5 years ago when he was in his early twenties is not a good argument. The boy has evolved big time. His boxing against Daley was very impressive, much more than Kos "dominating" a decision. Sorry a decision is never a domination in my book. A win yes. A clear win yea. But not a domination. A domination is a tap, a knockout, a tko, etc.

True but how long ago? Or better how many fights ago? One time. For some one who brings it he he wins a lot. More IMO than if Gsp had the same in ring gameplan with the same opponents.

I think if Diaz could avoid the clench (he boxes like a mofo inside), and learn a nasty double leg sprawl... He has this.

Bit gsp will have his own plan too.

    Great fight.

Diaz has only been tested in the standup realm in the last 5 years, and thats a LONG time. It's hard to say how his BJJ and wrestling have progressed, but we've seen vast improvements in his standup. He's an extremely technical and well conditioned fighter, I'd imagine his BJJ has made great leaps but wrestling will remain his Achilles Heel. In my personal opinion, regardless of how things appear on paper and how people want to break them down if I could chose 3 REAL threats to GSP right now I'd have Thiago at his best, Kos with a smart gameplan, and Diaz as a wildcard. Don't count this man out!

If you read my earlier posts, I am all for a GSP vs. Diaz fight.

Also Carlos Condit vs. GSP, Anthony Johnson vs GSP the list goes on.

This notion of a deserving contender is a tough one to justify when you have such a wall of failed contenders blocking the way. John Fitch and other top WW's could stop many potential contenders before they get a chance for a title. So I am of the opinion that matchmaking does not always HAVE to be regimented and fair, especially when you have a long line of contenders who had their shot, and lost.

The bottom line is that, as a fan, I want to see GSP, Silva and all the champions fight as often as possible. GSP, Silva and Aldo may not always fight contenders who fan's think are 'worthy', but WTF--the champs would never fight according to those standards.

Sure, failed contenders can get a rematch once in a while, but I am not enthusiastic about rematches unless I feel the fight will be different from the last one.

As I said in an earlier post, I heavily favor GSP in his match with Diaz, but this is MMA, and anything can happen--and Diaz is tough as nails, hard to knock out or submit, and he has off the charts cardio.

I am looking forward to this fight for sure--and I think many MMA fans are also.

Really? you didn't argue jones. He jumped his way without fighting a top 5. He did win but so could Diaz. Everyone has a bad night. Shogun is very unpredictable as far as which one shows up.

Point is it's matchmaking not a "tournament" "gran prix" or "play off"

It sucks it should change or mma will end up like boxing and the likelihood of "fixing" fights will be greater.

Look we can both argue based on our discussion of fighter attributes. It's hard to do so typing. So let's stick to truth. Thiago Albee may well be a better striker but I don't believe that. We would need specific attribute breakdowns. Which is a good thing.

However we can both agree it's a mess. And just because I want this matchup I fully understand this. What I call matchmaking is letting a berry small, often one person, setting up fights. It's just too much greed in the nature of the beast. The best we can hope for is a "league" or true "championship". But it would take a lot of smart people, many of them retired fighters, helping decide how to make it a sport. The one boxing never became.

@Edub how is this one step closer to boxing??? your logic does not make sense. Boxing fans have been crying for a matchup btw mayweather and paciao for ages and till this day nothing.

On the other hand the UFC are able to give us the fights we want, quite frankly I cant even believe i'm going to have the pleasure to watch this fight. yet your crying over Nick Diaz is not deserving, then please tell who is deserving?

Codemaster's posts beautifully explains why Nick is the best choice, not only is it going to a very entertaining fight but it makes sense cos both Diaz and GSP have no "deserving" contenders at the moment.

I think you need to chill and let the UFC do what they do best, which is put great fights together.

They also put together crap fights. What happens with matchmaking is you give a small group of people the power to put fights together. If mma were to become a true sport a system would need to be put up that allows fighters of simmer ranking to fight each other in a tier system. Bellator is the only fighting promotionnow doing it. They just don't have any where near the talent.

Who is more deserving than Nick Diaz in the WW division?

BJ Penn? John Fitch? Thiago Alvez?

I agree that Condit, Story and Johnson are great potential future matchups for GSP, but a fight between Diaz and GSP is the most interesting to me right now.

I remember people on this site and other sites bitching about John Jones getting a title shot, even though it was made possible due to Rashad's injury and Rampage being unprepared. Yet look what happened. I thought Jones would win, but I did not predict the level to which Shogun was dominated.

Diaz is the champ of strikeforce, and he has changed and improved since he fought in the UFC. I believe he is top level enough to be worthy to fight GSP, and the fight is definitely easy to promote--why? because it interests the fans.

If you have a favorite fighter you think deserves a fight with GSP, if GSP defeats Diaz, he will need more worthy contenders and the fights will probably happen.

GSP is going to dominate Diaz... in record fashion. Fitch, Alves, Penn, Condit, etc would destroy Diaz, and he gets the title shot? Weak.

If Diaz gets the title shot with GSP, then Overeem deserves a title shot as well (assuming he wins the Grand Prix).

None of those guys would dominate Diaz. Nor destroy him. If at all they would eak out a decision. Even the victories (five years ago) by ufc wrestlers were decisions most of them close. One person in Diaz career has "dominated" him.

It's like you guys who say chael dominated silva. Silva had no visa Le damage other than what he came in with and dominated sonnen by forcing him to tap by submission. People throw words around far to much and it makes arguments seem petty and false.

You might be right about Diaz but you are completely wrong about Sonnen not dominating Silva, just because he wasn't all cut up doesn't mean he was winning, it was very clear that he was losing every round including the last one right up until he got the submission.

Sorry I can't agree. If you tap you were dominated in a truly literal sense. If the fight continued chael would be dead. You can not continue dead.

You possibly could continue if it's a decision. Like rampage machida.

What you see as a fan is very different from what a fighter feels. There is no such thing as a "hail marry" triangle in the fifth round full sweat with a massive wrestler on you. It is executed with perfect technique and mental decipline. Chael was finished. Gsp hasn't finished anyone in a long while.

Bj was losing bigtime because of his cardio. Where as chael was the supposed aggressor. He made the mental error where as supposedly he could have won. Bj looked awful which Of course is because Gsp is that good.

Diaz will not gas. And rolls very awkwardly. He very well may not win bit ts not so clear as being presented.

See this is the problem when we don't have a more comprehensive fighting championship. IMO matchmakers suck. They ruined boxing.

I agree, trying to judge damage by physical appearance is not always accurate. Some fighters show damage more than others.

BJ Penn was an excellent example. I remember GSP beating the crap out of him with hard strikes--but he looked relatively unscathed after the fight. Sonnen hit Silva repeatedly with hard shots, and gained a CompuStrike record to boot, yet Silva looked better than Sonnen after the fight.

There is no doubt Sonnen dominated Silva for 4-1/2 rounds. The glass can be both half empty and half full at the same time. Silva showed a champion's heart and toughness to pull out a win at the last moment in a disasterous fight for him, and Sonnen had a history of being submitted and was exhausted and careless after beating up Silva for 23 minutes straight.

You can still dominate someone in a decision one. If you complete outlclass a guy and the time runs out, whose fault is it? I think in a 5 round fight DIaz would have his way with almsot all WW's. GSP is a pretty bad matchup for him, unless Diaz can expose him on the ground. On top of that GSPs conditioning and athletisism is insane.

Not true! the other guy could pick the dead guy up and slam him and hit his head on knocking himself out, hahah, pretty obvious thing to say.

wow this will be the toughest challenge GSP has had in a while. He hasnt faced a striker with the tenacity that Diaz possesses. Thats why GSP will take him down and hopefully get submitted and end his reign of terror in the middleweight division.

Say what you want about Dana White, but he always puts together the sensible matchups fans want to see. This will be an awesome fight.

Nick should have been with the UFC all a long, he doesn't need to be with strikeforce where he is on so many levels higher than every one else.

GSP wins= He beat a guy with no wrestling and TD defense, he can't finish fights.

    GSP looses= He was overrated

Dana delivers, awesome, this is the start of more previously unseen and anticipated fights to be made now that Zuffa own Strikeforce.

I agree--this is a good matchup, but it also is a promising precedent for future strikeforce/UFC bouts.

    Overeem vs. Velaquez?

    Kharitonov vs. Carwin?

JDS vs. Werdum......oh wait, that one has been done.

I'm excited for this fight, but i have a feeling GSP will be able to take Diaz down and stop his ground game quite easily, Nick has always had trouble with wrestlers and guys that can take him down. It just depends on how much Nick has improved on his takedown defence and if he can handle the strength of GSP on the ground. This fight could be a tough one for GSP or it could be an easy one, it really just depends on how well Diaz has improved.

IMHO, maybe GSP wins 8/10 times they fight, but I think Diaz will win when fighting each other for the first time.

nick is a bad matchup for gsp. as long as he doesnt get controlled to much on the ground, he should be able to tko gsp standing.

GSP is gonna unload leg kicks on Nick. GSP always says he takes the opponent's weakness and exploits it. He doesn't want to test Nick's BJJ and Nick has greater boxing for sure. Nick is definitely more of a threat than Jake Shields was so trying to make comparisons would be pointless. Regardless of the outcome, I'm sure we will all be happy that fight even took place.

haha you'd have to think that Jpg. Even as a fan of both guys, I don't give Nick much of a chance tbh. GSP will beat him, Nick has a punchers chance, at best.

I like both too Jamie. I find myself wanting Nick to win at the moment but I doubt its going to happen. Bad thing is he doesn't have that haymaker.

Excellent fight! Although I fear this spells the beginning of the end for the Strikeforce banner. With Diaz being the first Strikeforce star to challenge for the UFC title, champion vs champion, there is know doubt now that it is only a matter of time before Overereem, Werdum, Melendez etc follow suit. And lets face it, once these fighters have made the move to the UFC neither the fighter or the fan is going to want to see them return to Strike force. There are just too many interesting fights in the UFC. Also, with diaz making the move only months after ZUffa purchase Strikeforce, I now believe acquisition of talent was always the objective (despite what Dana says). In my opinion, after Strikefore HW tournament we're going to see a lot more of this type of thing. I'd be surprised if Strikeforce survives 2012.

It appears that Diaz is now in a multi-fight, multi-year contract with the UFC:

I´m guessing you´re right that many other fighters may soon be following the same path..
