Dana White and Brock Lesnar analyze UFC on FOX: Velasquez vs dos Santos
Posted on November 14, 2011, 04:48 AM by Anton GurevichUFC President Dana White and the former Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar provided their analysis of Junior dos Santos' 64-second triumph over Cain Velasquez, as part of UFC on FOX post-fight panel.
Surprisingly (or not), Dana White was the first man to critique Cain Velasquez, stating that A.K.A. product had a terrible gameplan, and made a fatal mistake of standing for too long with someone like Junior dos Santos. White also added that dos Santos "is well-known for getting tired", suggesting that Velasquez should've tried to drag the fight into Championship Rounds.
Apparently, White got carried away in the heat of the moment, since there was not even one positive word said about either of UFC on FOX main eventers:
"Listen, I'm no strategist and I'm nobody's coach but I don't understand why they didn't go for the shot early. They should have shot in on Junior Dos Santos knowing that he has the power early in the fight and tries to knock you out. But the truth is that Junior Dos Santos gets tired at the end of fights, you know? Here he is standing right in front of him trying to trade and bang with Junior Dos Santos and gets hit with that big right hand right behind the ear and down he goes. Down goes his heavyweight championship. I'll say it again, not saying that I'm some strategy coach but I don't know why they wouldn't take the shot on him and wrestle early.
It's one thing to feel a fight out but when you're standing right in front of a guy that you know his biggest weapons are his hands and he can knock you out and this thing is a five round fight. Get in there and start working him. Stay busy and put him against the fence. Rough him up and tire him out a little bit and bring it into the later rounds where Junior Dos Santos is well known for getting tired." - quote via BloodyElbow.com.
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar was a little bit more constructive, giving JDS the credit for being an effective "KO artist". Lesnar declared that he will analyze the Brazilian's performance, after getting the business done with Alistair Overeem on December 30th.

Am I the only person that doesn't blame Cain for not shooting for all takedowns for 64 seconds haha. Cain explained his strategy at the post fight presser. He said he would go for takedowns as the openings came but he knew JDS had good tdd. He just got caught before he could get going. I don't know why Dana seems to have such a problem. Cain seems like he had a good gameplan but when you get caught what can you do?
Having a gameplan that faces the strengths of your enemy does wonders if you manage to succeed and you are trying to prove yourself , but it's definitely not the best choice strategically.
The fact that the fight ended in 64 seconds makes it that much more dramatic of an error... because the opening of a fight is when the opponent is at full strength so you need to be most cautious.
That's like if Brock decided to stand up and bang with Overeem as soon as the fight started... how do you predict that would end? lol
No- I agree. What was he supposed to do? Pull a Brock and run across the ring to take down a guy with unreal TDD? Sometimes you get caught- it's as simple as that. If his game plan worked, all this Monday morning quarterbacks would be calling him an MMA genius.
I agree, you dont just go charging at someone as soon as the fight start for a takedown, only Chael Sonnen can pull that off. Cain should of have enough striking confidence to last for the take down opportunity. Nelson stood with JDS for 3 rounds, so did Carwin. Cain should of has some confidence to stand for a bit.
Dana has always had an axe to grind with AKA. Look it up. It was not about Cain, it was about his camp.
Probably has something to do with Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, and Mike Swick all being from there, all at welterweight, and all refusing to fight each other.
Had something to do with the MMA video game too I think
Dana was counting on Cain remaining Champion....probably had a bet on him.
Brock would get destoyed obviously but that's not really what Cain was trying to do. You know how GSP usually goes for takedowns? He usually waits for openings such as an opponent committing to an overhand right or when his opponent goes for a head kick. He doesn't just rush across the cage lunging for the takedown. I think that's how Cain wanted to approach it. He knew he couldn't just take JDS down at will. Just my opinion though.
Yea well done Dana you unprofessional prick, bad mouth your HW champ, someone your going to have to sell and hype in the near future, just because your bitter your golden boy lost.Never been a Brock fan but youve got to give credit where credits due, very professional with unbiased opinions towards either fighter,I respect him a lot more after seeing this.
cain should have taken junior on that 1st minute to the fence and try to start gassing him out and frustrating him there. one round of pressing JDS to the fences would make him much slower for the second round and then Cain could easily take a gassed JDS to the ground.
If you dont have Carwins or Nelson chin its a terrible decision to try to exchange with JDS on the 1st round. I really think that Cain could have won the standup match on later rounds. So terrible game plan IMO.
I hope they give Cain the Big Nog - Mirr winner!!
Maybe it's just me but it seemed like Dana White was mad that Cain lost. Could be he was just disappointed that the fight didn't last longer to satisfy everybody tuning in for the first time to check it out on FOX. But to me it seemed like he was pissed for some reason, like he wanted Cain to win. He did state b4 the fight even started that he thought Cain was the best in the world. Maybe he didn't like being proven wrong.
Dana was clearly pissed but its all business. The fact that fight lasted a minute did not help the ratings to build but White is mainly pissed cause Cain was the latino golden boy aka Mexican boxing fan magnet and got his ass-kicked in humiliating fashion. Adios to el Market. This is how Dana white thinks but the truth is Cain will be back and the mexican will always support him.
I think Dana was really hoping that this fight would be a repeat of Griffin vs. Bonnar 1, with the fight going everywhere, both of them beating the hell out of each other, but neither being able to finish. Griffin v. Bonnar basically put UFC on the map, and it would have been a really good time (with it being their premiere event to a MUCH larger audience) to have a fight nearly as epic.
As is anyone new to MMA and the UFC would probably watch Cain vs. JDS and think Cain just had no idea how to fight. Even worse, many will probably wonder what the fuss was all about and go back to boxing. Bad outing for the UFC overall, but it could have been rescued by also airing the much better Guida vs. Henderson fight as a warm-up.
"Going for shot early"? What about the take down attempt Cain tried 30 seconds into the fight?
Sounds like someone is pissed the "greatest heavyweight match up in MMA history" only lasted a minute.
I absolutely agree. he is so pissed because his greatest heavyweight fight of all time only lasted 64 seconds. If this would have been a normal ppv he would have told everybody what a bad dude JDS is. But now he is mad at cain because he didn't make this fight last longer. this interview is a disaster.
that also why he talked about how he would have taken this fight into the later rounds. thats BS. this is the first time that I really think that Dana White is a douche. But i read that Fox requested him to do this expert thing, i guess now everybody knows why he usually does not do it.
It is really odd that Dana is so obviously in Cane's corner. Is it because of wanting to capture the Mexican American demo? He had a chance to hype up a new Heavyweight camp in from of a mostly noob audience and instead, he cries. Really, really strange.
Yeah I agree with everyone here. Didn't like seeing Dana react the way he did. Deep down, I know he's upset that Cane lost, and more importantly that he lost in 64 seconds. But... shouldn't be criticizing him like that... not on FOX.
Cain*
Everything about this event was top level. The promotion, the network, the fighters. Everything except the fight itself. Dana must be pissed & I don't blame him. 1st time MMA viewers must of been left to wonder what the big deal was.
Did you hear Cain get booed by his fans when he lost. Man that's terrible
Was that Paul Daley`s walk on music in the background? Lol.
wow dana completly embarrassed himself there imo. he was blastng cains strategy and right when i thought he was gonna credit dos santos he sais....." but junior dos santos gets tired" he should be praising dossantos. douche.
This video makes me like brock that little bit more, not as a fighter as a person
Dana was mad, but by the way Dos Santos stands (sideways), you cant just dive into a baseball uppercut WHILE the fight is fresh, dumb strategy Dana lol
Brock Lesner needs to CHANGE CAMPS and wont be successful until he does! His training camp has produced horrible results and he still shy's away from punches, you can't flinch when Dos Santos is swinging, you have to evade by moving to countering. Brock doesn't fight hard in camp, and its shown as analyst like Bas Rutten explain the camps problems.
brock who did you bring in to prepare for overeem?
well i have pat barry...-____- smh
pat barry is a beast but hes such a small heavyeight...overeem is well not small
Pat Barry hits like a Mack truck though. I think good training for Brock would be to go for 3 round sparring fights with Pat Barry, and release the restriction of punching Brock in the face. Everytime Brock goes down from a punch: 100 push ups. Everytime Brock gets hit once and immediately shoots for a blind takedown: he runs a mile. Everytime Brock turns and runs away: Pat Barry gets to kick him in the nuts. Hard. Brock's stand up will improve.
Hahaha!!!!! Funniest comment I have seen in a while! Damn JTalbain my sides hurt!
barry may hit hard but getting used to getting hit is one thing but barrys 5'11, reem is 6'3. the angles and shots are completley diffrent.
Dana has no problem getting down and dirty with fighters. Because of his position he thinks he can say and do anything to fighters...no issue is small enough. Dana, shut the **** up you foul mouth dic head.
Dana White is pissed for more than one reason. Number 1 most fans and media thought it was a mistake to only have one fight on Fox especially a HW bout. Secondly everyone told him that Bendo V Clay should be on Fox and that turned out to be fight of the night. Last but not least Cain losing affetcs their ability to make money in the Latino market. I defend Dana from time to time but his behaviour was disgracefull imo, I thought Brock would be the problem, he gave more insight than EMotional hot headed Dana White.
This is what dana should of said "Listen, I'm no strategist and I'm nobody's coach thats why i should shut the **** up and let brock talk, over to you brock"
You could see it on their faces......
Dana was pissed that the fight lasted only a minute and Brock was pissed that Cain lost......
Frigging hilarious!!
I don't think the president of a company should be doing commentary. It would of been like Stinbrener calling Yankees games. Dana is to accustomed to running his mouth and dropping f-bombs which really won't fly on network TV. Saying over and over again that he's not an analyst isnt really a good call for a commentator either. I thought Brock did a pretty good job. Its always a good idea to have an athlete who is is the mix for thier take on things. They should of brought in bigger panel and had Pat Miltich and Randy Couture along with maybe another title holder like Edgar or GSP breaking things down alongside Brock.
The one fight broadcast was HUGE fail on the UFC's part. They had to know that it ran the risk of ending quickly. I wonder if this why network TV has shied away from fight sports in general over the years. A sporting event that can potentially end within seconds doesnt have the time slot security of an even with a set amount of time for play. They also lost out on exposing the Fox audience to guys like Bendo and Guida who are both very dynamic and entertaining fighters.
i agree, i can't think it left too good of an overall impression.
