It still bugs me a lot when Dana White starts saying people that judge a fight before it happens are morons. He still didn't get the fact that we're not complaining about the fact that they're mismatches, we're complaining about he fact that some fights don't make sense or don't mean a lot in terms of their impact in the division. That's why sometimes we complain about a card before it happens.
I'm surprised i'm getting all these weaks. I was defending us fans, we have the right to complain about cards before they even happen without being called morons.
Next time I see someone complain before a card happens, i won't back him up.
Did Dana just said ...2011 fight of the year, and then bash the fans how they are morons for predicting the fights, .. ...He can't predict or judge a whole year (2011) fight either before it happen.....so, how could he call that fight of the year.....what a bunch of crap.........kind of stupid of him saying that..
i think it was more due to the fact you said "fights don't make sense or don't mean a lot in terms of their impact in the division". i can't think of a single fight last night that didn't have an impact on its respective division
Under normal circumstances I would be all for the rematch, but doing that after kinda belittles the WEC LW belt. Pettis beat one of the top LW's in the world. And even though by decision, he manages to wrap it up with the kick heard 'round the world. My dad is an old redneck who knows little to nothing about the sport, but 2 weeks ago he tells me "Man I saw this feller on TV kick the hell outta this guy and take his belt. It looked like sumpin on that Matrix movie..." So it's safe to say a few people have seen it, and marketability's there. Not that Maynard vs Edgar wasn't an epic fight, or unworthy of a rematch, but which of the following actions warrant top contendership?
1. Neither defeating, nor losing to, the champion.
2. Matrix head-kicking your way to a decisive win over the champion.
Though the champions differ, I gotta go with number two. Give Pettis Edgar, then Gray vs the winner. More fair to everyone (the fighters) IMO.
Rematch is the only choice here, right now there is no champion really. Kind of funny that Ariel hunted Dana down and you can see that Dana has had a drink or two.
Its a really sticky situation... I can see why everyone says a rematch is warranted obviously, but at the same time Pettis worked hard to become the champion of the WEC and then right when he achieved that goal the promotion was sucked into the UFC, which basically made that title worthless... However, by announcing that the WEC LW champ would receive an immediate title shot in the UFC, it kind of gave that title worth after all. How would fans have felt if the PRIDE champ had to sit it out and wait like their achievements in Japan meant nothing?
With all that said, I really dont know what the best decision is either. My immediate thoughts were to go forth with the Edgar-Pettis match and give Maynard the winner.... But then you forever have that question looming if Pettis beats Edgar and goes on to face Maynard instead of Frankie. So I guess the rematch makes sense, but I hate what it does to Pettis. All that hype and momentum he garnered over 2010 will start to dissipate and then not only does Pettis stand to lose, but the UFC loses out on money from the hype that "Showtime" would have carried into that fight.
I agree that a rematch sucks for Pettis--and other potential contenders, but I don't see any other fair way of dealing with a draw in a title bout.
From a promotional point of view, it is not that bad. This title fight was expected to be boring, and it was the opposite. A rematch will garner much more interest, and with Pettis waiting in the wings, Dana has at least two highly anticipated LW title matches scheduled.
Part of the planning for future fight cards revolves around title fights, as these are easy to promote. If Maynard vs. Edgar was a draw AND it was boring, it would be a different story, but the fight was exciting, so it sells the rematch.
I really do not believe that Pettis will lose momentum due to the delay. I certainly will not forget his WEC title fight, and I think this will be true for most MMA fans.
With Cain off for who knows how long, the other weight class title fights will have to to the heavy lifting promotionally. (that is, unless they go for an interim HW belt)
I wouldn't say drunk, but definatly had a few! I dont think he has EVER been this honest and straight forward in an interview. Theres TRUTH in ALCOHOL.
If it wasnt such a controversy and a title fight id say just let Edgar and Pettis go at it and then Gray gets the winner for the next title fight. But DW really needs to take care of the problem at hand before he worries about bringing Pettis into the fold.
I would really like young Pettis to get the chance to fight. They really need to unify those belts. But, Maynard does deserve it too hard choice for Mr. White.
what does frankie have to fight every one twice give him a break hes had 4 fights in a little over a year and back to back fights with bj now back to back with grey wtf.. frankie will have to prove him self yet again. and i think he will still come out on top... dana has stacked division and theres more fights that need to happen than rematches #$%^ u dana
It really is a depressing situation. I am sure the rematch will again be a great fight, but we are missing out on other fights in that time (although they will probably still happen, but later).
After I saw the fight and had thought about the situation a little, my conclusion was that there should be no draw in in title fights and the fight should go to sudden victory in an additional round (maybe this should be the case in all fights, not only in title fights). This way, we don't get into situations like this.
I would also like to agree on the statement that if the first round was not a 10-7, then 10-7s don't exist. You cannot be more out of a fight without it being stopped than Edgar was.
Alternative solution: three-way-dance with Edgar, Maynard and Pettis, plus Ben Henderson as special referee (just kidding).

Great interview.

I was also thinking this could be the fight of the year. Based on the top fights of 2010.

Draw in a title fight? Yeah, REMATCH. The right call.
Dana has lots of t-shirts.

Oh ya rematch that was a great fight

He made the right decision, Gray deserves a rematch.

Dana's a bit drunk here isn't he? :)

R1- 10-8 Maynard
R2- 10-9 Edgar
R3- 10-9 Maynard
R4- 10-9 Edgar
R5- 10-9 Edgar
So it was overall 47-47 I thought it was a draw too
i dont think a takedown alone can win a round. edgar won the last 4 rounds

unicorns are pretty rare alright...been having a few brewskies dana?
Excellent choice of Dana White to give an immidiat rematch to Maynard.
I would really like young Pettis to get the chance to fight. They really need to unify those belts. But, Maynard does deserve it too hard choice for Mr. White.

lol its because hes the only champ who doesnt get injured
