Dana White: Nate Diaz will wait for his shot at the UFC Lightweight title

UFC President Dana White revealed about Nate Diaz's decision to wait for his shot at the UFC Lightweight title, instead of fighting Anthony Pettis for the number one contender spot. Recent rumors suggested that Diaz will now be facing Pettis for the right to challenge the winner of Edgar vs. Henderson rematch, but now it looks like the former WEC Lightweight champ is now once again denied of his shot at glory.

Henderson and Edgar will meet again at UFC 150 on August 11th, which means that Nate Diaz is not expected to fight again before December, or even the first part of 2013.

Here's what Dana White had to say about granting Nate Diaz a title shot:

"Poor Anthony Pettis, he's in that weird spot right now. I litterally just talked to Nate Diaz, Nate Diaz is going to wait to get that title shot."

Nate Diaz is no longer in the shadow of nick.

He is becoming a beast, I loved the trademark taunts throughout the fight.

Hope he fights again before a title shot !

nate could surpass nick. He has a great relationship with the UFC and doesnt have any problems with the commission and now he is becoming just as good of a fighter as his brother. DIAZ champ late 2012

No one can argue that he's a beast...I just can't forget how he was manhandled by Rory MacDonald--which makes the notion of "beastly" invincibility such a relative concept...

Yea they are very similar in skill but Nate has a much better business head on him, he knows when and how to be a company man.

There's a reason Nick is making more than a couple Mil a fight though. Being a company man, and a guy who puts butts in seats are two completely different things.

I agree that I would prefer to see Nate fight Pettis instead of waiting but honestly if Diaz wants a break he has more then earned it.

He will have earned the the break but taking another fight will just make him even better, obviously gives him another payday (maybe help his title fight camp?) and will just make his title even more marketable.

Of course if he takes the fight he runs the risk of losing but that's the job he's in.

You get a big pay day in a title fight, so there is the issue of risking it, and if he does become the champ he will fight Pettis anyway, and he will make more money if he fights Pettis then as the champ, rather than fighting him while waiting for the title.

Nate has never been knocked out in his UFC career. He has only ever lost decisions either split or unanimous. Also he has the height advantage over Pettis,

He is waiting because its what every fighter wants, a title ! The Diaz brothers are the masters of calling other fighters scared. Diaz is definetly not scared of Pettis.

No matter who fights for the title first Pettis or Diaz/ I think right now Ben Henderson , Frankie and Maybard can beat anyone in the division.

If you read my posts I actually picked Diaz to win. I did pick decision but only to make my pick safe.lol. I think that Miller was too small and a (tad) overrated. I don't think Pettis will Ko him or hand him a lickin but i feel he will out point Diaz and escape the ground game if it enters there. I think Stylistically it's a bad matchup but I am not saying Pettis is a better fighter.

Yea and Fedor is a big joke now a days, who Dana won't even hire as gatekeeper.. Yea that how stup!d you sound.

First of all Pettis already whoop Ben Henderson once, and can do it again.... And Nate Diaz has also beaten Maynard in an MMA fight.. So Diaz vs Maynard 3 would be awesome in the future. I can keep on explaining you many things, but really your a waste of time..

Frankie Edgar is a guy who fights with a gameplan. He will actually hit takedowns on the guy with notoriously shoddy takedown defense before he gets rocked up against the fence.

I wouldn't have bet. That's why my pick was a split decision to begin with. Frankie has never been subbed, and has been on the ground with BJ Penn. A submission against him is unlikely. However, a takedown against Nate Diaz is extremely likely if Edgar shoots.

I was excited to see Diaz win, and I'm about the furthest thing to a Diaz hater.

wow, i was stoked to see diaz fight for the title. then this video reminded me that the ufc is waisting everyones time with the henderson/ egdar rematch. the ufc took the most stacked division, and put the title on hold, and for a fight that wasnt even that good. makes zero sense to me. i would bet ANY amount of money that edgar wont be champ by the of of 2012.

I really like Frankie but if he somehow beats Bendo then a rubber match will have to happen. If that happens then Diaz waits until fall 2013 for the title shot? I love ya Frankie but you need to lose to keep this division fresh. Cut to 145 and carve a new legacy there.

Diaz has definitely earned a break but I think a fight against Pettis would do him good. Of course a fight will make you better but especially in this case as if he beats Pettis and then fights for the title against Bendo then that will be two similar fights in a row.

I'm not saying Pettis and Bendo are mirror images but they are both great wrestlers, both have a Tae-kwon-do background, have a resemblance in their stand up (Pettis more flashy) and both will try to sub you straight away if it gets into a scramble.

Up to Diaz of course but I would say go for Pettis and just make the title fight even more marketable.

lol, Your cool by me Evan, was just messin also. I've been an MMA fan forever and I've watched the Diaz bros work their way up. They've been counted out so many time and proved people wrong so many times, that I throw it back sometimes. At this point, I dont see anyone beating Nate in LW. His reach and height are a plus, similar to Bones Jones, minus the elbows. Guillotines are easier to sink in on smaller opponents, his reach comes into play always. If you do take Nate down, you better be damn careful. The days of him fighting stronger wrestlers like Rory are over. Hes also showed a huge improvement on Take down defense. The Miller fight showed me hes learned to grab a leg while in a take down attempt to keep them from getting leverage and his stance is wide enough, they eventually let go and get slapped backing up. I have a feeling Nate and Nick have been working that technique and hope to see Nick use it soon against another opponent IF he comes back.

I've said it many times on here Nick along with BJ (and Robbie Lawler) is my favorite guy to watch fight. Has been for years.

His brother has made his way up my personal list also quickly enough in heis career (which is understandable since he fights exactly like his bro).

The problems they will always have though is guys who gameplan, and ones that use wrestling well (while also having good sub defense). Miller went for about a takedown and a half in the fight, and didn't set it up at all. That's fine though because I thought Miller was overrated to begin with, and now we get to see Nate fight Ben, Frankie, or Pettis next (and all of those are absolutely amazing fights).

If i was nate I would rather take the pettis match than risk ring rust by the time he would get the title fight. If he truly thinks he can be the champ (which i think he can anyway) he should have no problem beating pettis. I'm no nate though so....no matter what WAR DIAZ

Nate is doing the right thing (eventhough I think he would take apart Pettis). Wait for that title shot.

On the other hand, Petttis has begun to run his mouth lately. Maybe he can run it enough to get under Nate's skin, and we can get a #1 contender's match with a little bit of bad blood involved with possibly the two most exciting LWs in the world.

This is one of those times when a guaranteed title shot backfires. The UFC could make Pettis vs Diaz on the undercard of the Henderson vs Edgar fight with the winners facing off. Now we have to wait.

I want to see Nate vs Fankie in a classic boxing slug fest. This is a dream matchup for any boxing fan let alone mma fan. Bendo is a thicker lightweight but I still think Nate would out strike him. After the fight with Rory macdonald I don't think anyone in lightweight has a chance at knocking Nate out. Nate is on another level and he is extremely focused you can see it in his face. He will be lightweight champion.
