Dana White: Jon Jones is #2 Pound-for-Pound behind Anderson Silva

UFC President Dana White shared the latest edition of his Pound-for-Pound rankings, placing Jon Jones on #2 behind Anderson "The Spider" Silva. White admitted that Jones' run in 2011 was "one of the nastiest in the UFC history" in combination with the competition he faced inside the Octagon. According to the White, at the age of twenty-four Jones is yet to reach his full potential, which could see him becoming the new Pound-for-Pound king for years to come.

It's interesting to note that White's previous #2 was Frankie "The Answer" Edgar, who will defend his title against Ben Henderson at UFC 144 in Japan.

I would agree even if I dont like the guy.

Finishes over shogun, rampage and machida should earn you that spot

nope he is no 1 in mine. Anderson "pampered" Silva has only fought twice both last year and this year, Bones on the other hand has had 4 quality fights with dominant performances and finishes in just a year. I dont like Jones's personality but the kid is a fighting machine, and no in LHW can stop him right now. After he destroys Hendo, Rashad and Davies there will be nothing left for him but move up or have a super fight with the spider himself to prove my point.

Based on his accomplishments and esp. his destructive finishes of top fighters, Jones is IMO the current P4P followed by JDS, GSP, and then Anderson Silva...It's true that the spider has the longest reign in his division, but he was so overwhelmed by Sonnen in his last fight that a P4P qualification is pretty controversial...BUT, this is just my opinion...

I've had jones at number 2 for awhile. There just wasn't an argument for GSP being there with the way he fights(not talking about finishes). Jones is the kobe to Silvas jordan, and just like those 2 jones is just getting started while silva is about to enter his late 30's and is on his way out.

Jones has some weaknesses that we've seen in the past couple of fights, but he's nowhere near his plateau.

Sortof retarded that some people compare a 24 year olds fighting frequency with a 37 year old, but not exactly surprised by lack of intelligence and the double standards, silva is still the most hated person in MMA right? Followed by brock, jones and bisping, all for childish and foolish reasons.

Even though I hate him as a person, we all have to admit that he is the best right now. Anderson is beat-able, sonnen embarrassed him for 25mins. Jones has never looked to be in trouble and I can't think of anybody who is a serious threat to his title.

By that time Silva will be passed his prime. Jones is probably going to be fighting twice a year from now on. Machida was out striking Jones in the first round, Silva has much more power than Machida, and a chin that doesnt quit. I can see Silva taking out Jones.

You're absolutely right. Jones is a freakish specimen...He's bound to defeat Rashad and Davis and clean his division...Should he bulk up (which he can easily do) and move up in weight, he'll be a threat to anyone in the HW division...A dream match-up will be against JDS--another fighting machine with a natural killing instinct...

yes but remember that anderson silva is 37 years old as opposed to jones who's 24 and only three- four years into his career. They are in complefe different stages in their careers. Still Jones is at least top two for me as well.

@ buragash ..id love to see jones fight 4 times a year when hes 37 like anderson is. and even if you dont like silva your an idiot if you think a guy on a 15 fight win streak (13 with the belt) is a nobody. silva got an awesome highlight reel in a tough division. everyone says its a shallow division but thats just cause silva cleared it out as soon as he retires youll see how tough the division is cause the belt will be constantly changing. i personally cant stand jones but ill admit hes an awesome athlete and deserves his success

i wouldnt call MW a tough division. its the easiest one. thats why silva likes to stay there. silva and jones walkes around the same weight just that jones has taken a bigger test cleaning out the LHW division...

and he makes it look easy...

the question is: does jones have the balls to put on some real challange and move up to HW?

There is no way he will give anyone in the heavy weight division problems to start. Good quality muscle is hard to gain. By regular people standards after the first year of growth its 6lbs a year. He cuts down to 205 he can probably solid 15lbs of muscle his first year. So that throws him to 220lbs and any fat he puts on. Brock cuts down from 290 plus.

Actually, Jones walks around at about 235 and cuts down to 205, then rehydrates back up to 225 or so for the fight. If he packed on 15 lbs of muscle and didn't cut anything before his fight, he'd weigh in at 250.

Where do you get your information about a fighter's weight? And how much he cuts?

Seems to me alot of fans like to throw around bogus weight issues when they don't approve of certain fighters.

It's been in various interviews with trainers and what not. They don't have some website with all the information gathered or anything, but they usually drop the numbers a few times whenever it's a big enough deal. Kinda like when Dana White was tallking about Anthony Johnson's weight being at 198 right before his welterweight fight with Dan Hardy.

Yea jones could EASILY give guys in the HW division serious problems. Guys there have a comparable reach advantage, but they don't have the diversity in striking and frankly just don't use the reach that well.

He seems to be able to throw those kinds of kicks forever too, and the leverage he can put on the wrestlers is a really big deal. Even against guys who can compare in size, he can throw those gruesome elbows if you've got his wrist on the ground. If he gained weight to go to HW, it shouldn't be much or he'd give up some of the best advantages he has.

I'm not a Jones hater. I admire his abilities a lot but I don't see him having an EASY time at HW. He would win most but I don't necessarily see him going undefeated with fast strong newer guys like JDS and Cain. In addition, guys like Overeem, Mir and Lesnar present a problem he's never seen before - freakish strength and weight.

Jones is so young and relatively thin. I think he will naturally mature into a HW and end up there.

I really don't see cain beating jones. He had a tough enough time with freaking congo who he had to hug because he kept getting dropped. Jones would probably annihilate him. I like JDS but don't go hyping him up just because he's the champ now.

MW is far from the weakest division. Infact, it's alot like LHW in that alot of the fighters can beat each other,so you have alot of triangles, such as sonnen marquardt maia etc.MW just doesn't have the amount of ex-champions hanging around that LHW does, but then jones just got the championship. After he's hung onto it for awhile and the ex's don't feel they have a chance, they will vacate too.

    hendo no chance

rashad maybe will last longer than rampage

    phil davies not yet

    who else is there?

i think he will reign for quite some time but will eventually get his ass fed to him by suprise KO technically no one beats him.

silva would be good fight but jones would just out muscle him and smash him from top.

if he moves to HW thats a different story

I agree, he is not as smooth and precise but his strength, reach and inventiveness are getting him some mad props. Anderson should take every fight seriously from now on to show who is still king. Machida really did do well and even better than Bones in the first and Bones knew it as it was written on his face after the round but Machida got sloppy and this new master caught his chance like a pro. I would love to see Machida get another shot at him sometime.

    I have it:

    1) Anderson

    2) GSP

    3) Cruz

    4) Aldo

    5) Jones

    6) Edgar

    7) Benavidez

    8) dos Santos

    9) Maynard

    10) Diaz

Cruz has defended his belt 4 times. Aldo also. Jones and Edgar just twice. When you're 205 it's easier to finish a fight, then when you weigh 135 pounds. I look at who he's beaten, not how. Jones hasn't beat #2 and #3 LHW's. He will probably beat them, but he hasn't yet. I think Rashad has a very good chance. He is very fast, he closes distance well (first 10 seconds against Rampage). He has good wrestling overall and is a BJJ blackbelt. I think Hendo has no chance though.

    6) Gilbert Meledez

    7) Nick Diaz

    8) JDS

    9) Dominick Cruz

    10) Dan Henderson

But that's just my opinion. Everyone has their own p4p list. I think Bones is a great fighter, but until he beats some solid heavyweights, he'll never break my top 3 p4p list.

Edgar beat a bigger Penn twice, and he knocked out a bigger Maynard. He's the only champ that's fighting at a weight class above his natural weight. That's why I have him at no 2. Your comment was pretty funny though.

Could your list be any more non-sense than it is? The top two can't really argue, that's just a matter of opinion, i personally think GSP is above Anderson, because he can do what he wishes in a fight, and is always better than his opponent at what it is he wishes to do... wrestle alves, strike koscheck, etc. Whereas Anderson ONLY performs when the opponent is doing what Anderson wants to do.... chael, maia, leites are good examples. But that isn't what bugs me about your list... BENAVIDEZ? seriously? What crack are you smoking to have him even in the top 20 p4p??? and maynard? honestly?

maynard is a BIG LW, and he got ko'd (and could not KO) a SMALL LW. How you can place him above --insert almost any fighter here-- , is ridiculous. Benavidez? Seriously? lolll im in shock, is he your cousin or something? the list should look a little more like this in my opinion, most of which you can move up or down a spot or two depending how you view things.

1)GSP (based off dominance, not a finisher, be does he not make everyone else look like a bum?)

2)AS (he comes to fight, and if someone else comes to fight him, unless its chael or another pure wrestling tactic, he looks great)

-------This is where it gets tricky--------

    3)Jones

    4) JDS

    5)Edgar

those 3 you can place any way you wish

    6)Cruz

    7)Aldo

Mix those up however you wish, they're very neck n neck, one has blazing speed and footwork, the other has big power, but a little weak in the cardio department)

8)Condit (althought its not yet proven, i firmly believe he will be after he ko's diaz and puts up a hell of a fight against GSP, maybe even winning

    9) Diaz

    10) hmmm, tougher and tougher to pick as it goes on, this one could be anybody really, from chael to cain to faber and the list goes on... but I can surely tell you maynard and benavidez don't belong, who's #11? MAtt brown?

The pound for pound thing originated in boxing if I'm not mistaken.I remember in the late 80's and into the late nineties, me an my brothers would get together and compare our P4P lists of boxers. But I was a kid then, and it may have come from elsewhere bud.

At any rate, the pound for pound thing has been around for a minute or two. And to be honest, it didn't make much sense back then either; I mean all it is - is a list of someone's favorite fighters......that's it. When I did it in boxing, those are the guys I put on my list.

choosing p4p to me is to look at how dominating a fighter is in his division. nobody dominates their division more than anderson and jones. gsp doesnt finish his opponents and he doesnt get away with easy wins, he struggles 5 rounders....

    jones never been hurt..

jones is demolishing fighters who rarely gets finished.

he steamrolled throuh LHW division with 2 decisoins wins and 7 finishes and a DQ which he dominated

keeping on like this and he will be bigger than anderson....

GSP DOESN'T DOMINATE? HE STRUGGLES?? Are you kidding me? He doesn't get away with easy wins? Come on, he always stays on top et outstrike his opponents. The way he threats his opponents (exception; last rounds in the Shields fight where he couldn't see with one eye), is just ridiculous. Nobody since UFC 69 has been able to beat gsp or standing up or on the ground. NOBODY. Since then, nobody outwrestled him. Nobody kept him under for more than... 10 seconds?. Nobody he fought showed better kicks. Nobody he fought showed better boxing skills. Nobody he fought looked stronger. Nobody he fought looked less tired than him. Nobody he fought, EVEN IS THEY HAD 5 ROUNDS TO DO IT, was able to finish him or get into a dominant position. Nobody was able to hold him against the cage. Nobody was able to take him down (exception, Koscheck, the national wrestler, twice while gsp took him down 6 times (total)). Nobody he fought showed better conditioning, better speed, better cardio. Get your facts next time you post something wrong. I mean, you can have an opinion, but you need arguments, not lies.

Whatever jd. GSP takes down anyone with decent striking, and jabs anyone with a good groundgame. It really can't be compared to silva who hasn't really taken anyone seriously since dan henderson, or jones who looks abit invincible because he's a legitimate pro-athlete who happens to practice martial arts.

i agree with dana jones should be number 2. no one has defended the lhw belt since chuck. jones last three opponents are all former champions that have all held the belt since chuck lost it. IMO the top 5-6 lhw are pretty much equal and could beat one another on any given night thats why the belt has kept changing hands. jones won it from shogun and defended it twice finishing all three opponents who all at some point where considered to be in the top 10 pfp rankings. so as i was saying i agree with dana with the calbre of fighters he's faced and the way he's defeated them he deserves to be acknowledge as one of the best there is.
