Dana White: Frankie Edgar can get an immediate title shot at Featherweight
Posted on March 1, 2012, 12:53 PM by Anton GurevichIf Frankie Edgar moves down to Featherweight, he will get an immediate shot at Jose Aldo's title.
That's according to the UFC President Dana White, who continued to execute his persuasion tactics, this time speaking at the UFC on FX 2 pre-fight press conference in Sydney, Australia. White agreed Frankie Edgar deserves an immediate rematch against the newly-crowned champion, Ben Henderson, but will get a shot at Jose Aldo's UFC Featherweight title if decides to move down in weight classes.
quote via BloodyElbow.com
"I feel like Frankie Edgar absolutely deserves a rematch [against Ben Henderson], seeing as how every time this guy has fought, he's given everyone else a rematch," he said. "Yet, I don't want him to fight at 155 pounds, I want him to go to 145 and fight for that title. And if we do give him a rematch, it clogs up [the division] -- there are other guys that are in line waiting and it's just a big mess."
Frankie Edgar already expressed his desire to rematch Ben Henderson, and a somewhat skeptical approach over a mover down to Featherweight. Frankie Edgar is currently 14-2-1 in his MMA career, after tasting his first defeat since the UFC Fight Night 13 encounter with Gray Maynard.

Well that clog starts when you give multiple rematches. As I said before if you lose and its close, make the guy who lost fight at least one more guy before hes back again. If he loses to the up and coming guy, then so be it, he shouldn't get that shot again. There has to be some sort of reward for these guys finishing fights. If you do have the loser fight one in between, it gets rid of that clog, and the contenders still get their shot.
The bonuses were supposed to be the incentive to try and finish the fight, KO of the night, sub of the night etc, it just doesn't seem to be working much these days, they need some kind of risk vs reward kind of scheme, something along those lines anyway........
ok he lost close fight as champ wants rematch is fair compared to not fighting another weight class but getting a chance at the belt at least he
had fought his ass off to get to champ
Remember the old yellow card in Pride. Get a yellow card for lack of effort and get docked money or points
It did work didnt it Bruce. Theres nothing like a ref saying" hey man, you just lost money and part of your fight, now get busy."
That's the most intelligent thing I have seen you type since I started using this site. Most of the time you are the biggest clown on here posting.
I usually just like to have fun, but don't let the red nose and big shoes fool you. I actually have a very high IQ.
yeah, they should be rewarding the fighters who go for the finish. thats what we want to see as fans. i dont want to see the champ fighting to try to outscore and win by decision, i want him to fight to finish. and if he makes a mistake and gets KO i feel that you deserve a rematch more than a close decision because anything can happen in a fight. when it goes to decision, the rematch is most likely going to go the same way. the champ should be able to finish his opponents or at least beat them in a very convincing fashion more often than not IMO. Frankie, we dont want to see another rematch. sorry
Personally i feel like Franky clearly lost. When the fight was over, if somebody had told me that there would be a controversy i would have been like "huh ? about what fight on the card? not this one obviously?!"
But later i rewatched the fight and it was a lot closer than i thought the first time, but i STILL gave it to Henderson because of the fact that he pushed the pace and destroyed Franky's face, and almost got finished more than once when Henderson never was in real danger at all.
I would hate to see a rematch personally even though Franky must feel like it's not fair to him since he gave rematches to both of his last opponents.
I would LOVE to see him fight Aldo, and i can't understand why he seems so not interested in moving down in weight. Especially when Dana his boss insists so much ... I mean he has such an amazing chance against Aldo, people would consider him a god if he became the champ there too. And if he looses, no big deal he lost to a top 5 pound for pound best fighter in the world and can come back at LW if that's what he really wants...
I think Edgar knows that it is very hard for him to retain the title in LW. But why he still choose to stay, because he knows that feather weight is Aldo's division, and No one can take the belt from Aldo. He can only be a champ there after Aldo move up.
when is dana gonna realize that no1 gives a ****ed what he wants. Frankie is a grown ass man and will fight at whatever division HE wants to.
dana and frankie keep saying that frankie gives every one rematches, thats rediculouse. imo bj got robbed the first fight, and he went to a draw with maynard. a DRAW! how the f*ck is that giving a rematch? no one won.
it seems now every time a high profile fight goes to a close decision, its an instant rematch. ive never wanted to see an instant rematch in my life. hendo won, frankie lost, let both fighters move on. if frankie gets the rematch, he will have fought 3 guys in his last 6 fights.
the way i see it is that frankie needed two attempts to beat each of his last two opponents cuz he couldnt get it done the first time. i dont see how that is a reason for him to get a rematch.
I agree with everything you said except one thing: You said that when a fighter loses he loses, and when a fighter wins he wins, let's move on. I agree 100% with that ! But then you went on and said that BJ got robbed in their first fight and the way you looked at it was that it took Franky 2 attempts to win against BJ. It's a bit contradictory i think since you should have seen as "ok BJ lost, period"
Anyway, i agree that instant rematches are BS, when somebody loses there souldn't be any rematch. MAYBE give the loser only 1 fight in between before giving him a rematch again, but not immediately.
Anyway that's my 2 cents.
Dana is just trying to persuade Frankie to move down to FW because he thinks he's better suited there and i have to say i actually agree. Frankie is a small guy and him winning fights in the LW division was only going to last for so long before it caught up with him and that's what we saw with Hendo. Don't get me wrong, that's what made Frankie so special, the fact that he was beating guys who were bigger and stronger than he was, guys that he was expected to lose to.
You could see that Ben hurt Frankie with every strike he threw and by the later rounds he was really feeling it. The difference in size and strength was clearly beginning to take it's toll. One of Frankies best attributes is his speed, the kid is lightning fast man, his combinations are a blur and he caught almost every kick Ben threw, which didn't do much by way of points or defending the blow but it sure showed how quick he is.
He has every right to ask for a rematch with Hendo and deserves to get it, i don't see how they could refuse him. But i actually think he WOULD be better off going down to FW to fight Aldo, especially in the long term. Also, against what most people think i actually think he would be a bad match up for Aldo. I know how dangerous Aldo is but with Frankies speed, combinations and lateral movement i think he would have a good chance of success.
Remember, nobody thought initially that he would beat Bj, especially twice, and then repeat the feat with Maynard too. Edgar has showed what talents he possess' and i just happen to think them talents would be a lot more effective at FW. Of course it's Frankies call though and nobody could complain if he chooses to stay at LW with the success he's had there, i think he would have even more at LW though...........
..............and that's my two cents!.....
Imagine how fast that fight would have ended if Frankie was well versed in leg locks. He had grabbed Ben's leg everytime he kicked and held on to it a few times. Thats the perfect position to wrap up a leg lock, why couldnt anyone else see that?
Canot agree with at all. Dana takes Edgar as a idiot, but Edgar is not. He knows that if he fight Aldo he will get his ass kicked. Aldo is a totally different animal. Edgar will most likely move back to LW aftet a loss to Aldo.
Try to submit Benson is not good idea.
Ben's legs are thicker than frankies head, can't you see that?
I think subbing anyone is a good idea if they stick there leg out at you 6 times in a fight for the taking.
He seems to stick everything into harms way and make the guy thats going for the sub pay more than him. You have to KO Benson to stop him.
heel hook is what I was trying to say.
Dana is throwing this on the table because Bendo could be out 6 months or more.....
He may have fractured his hand and/or foot.
He deserves a rematch but he's not going to get one. Clever.
Until the match with Ben, the 155 title was contested 4 times over two years, but only between three fighters.
If it was three guys that were head and shoulders above the other contenders, you could see it. But the division is stacked.
As much as Frankie deserves to get his belt back, there's guys who've never had a crack at it, who deserve that chance more.
It will be interesting to see what Edgar does. I think it's obvious he belongs in a lower weight class. Having a reputation as being able to beat bigger guys is great...as long as you win.
I would like to se e Edgar fighting Aldo or Pettis for a title shot.
Edgar should not be forced to move to feather weight, although I wouldnot want to give him a rematch. It is clearly not good for Edgar's career, as there is not as many big fights as there is here in LW.
Come on the fight wasn't really all that close, I gave Ben all rounds but he clearly won at least 4. I have no idea why people rate running around the outside of the octagon so highly. Ben held the center of the cage and while he does that it really doesn't matter if Frankie is running around on the outside Ben is still being the dominant fighter. Other then that Ben obviously dominated every other aspect of that fight.
I don't believe Franky Edgar will be AS affective at featherweight. I think what gives him the edge against most 155 lb fighters is his speed and boxing. I don't believe he will have as much of a speed advantage against the top contenders in the featherweight division. Franky out works bigger fighters, thats his whole steez, most likely won't happen at 145. I still think Edgar would be a great fighter at 145 but I dont see him having any speed advantage over Jose Aldo. I would love to see that fight but I think its in Frankys best interest to stay at 155 where he can outwork and out strike his opponents.
Not fair to Edgar
I think it's very fair. He's free to stay at 155 and slug his way back to a title shot. And if he can beat 1 or 2 top contenders, you better believe the UFC will hype the David vs Goliath thing.
And how many other fighters could change a weight class and get an instant title shot?
After fighting the same two guys for the last two years, there is no way the UFC was going to do an instant rematch unless it was highway robbery. And it wasn't.
I think the only people who believe Frankie got burned probably picked him in their pools or bet on him.
Judging isn't just based on striking, it's effective striking. Did Frankie hit Ben more than vice versa? Only if you don't count leg kicks, but even then, it's not just hit your opponent, it's how hard you hit them as well.
And based on that, Frankie got his ass whipped.
