Dana White: Frank Mir will replace Alistair Overeem against JDS at UFC 146
Posted on April 21, 2012, 09:01 AM by Anton GurevichAfter long weeks of confusion, it's finally "official" - Frank Mir will replace Alistair Overeem against Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC 146.
That's according to the UFC President Dana White, who confirmed the news on Twitter:
Taking off to Atlanta!!!! May 26 th is now Mir vs JDS for the HW title in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand.
— Dana White (@danawhite) April 21, 2012
Alistair Overeem will tell his side of the story on April 24th, appearing before the Nevada State Athletic Commission in regards to his failed drug test (elevated T/E ratio). UFC decided not to wait for results of the hearing, and booked the fight between Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir.
The identity of Cain Velasquez's new opponent is yet to be revealed, but it is definitely a possibility that the former champ will face Alistair Overeem, if the Dutchman manages to convince the athletic commission next week. If not Overeem, Fabricio Werdum (scheduled to fight Mike Russow in Brazil) seems like the only logical option for Velasquez.
This also brings an official end to #RallyForMarkHunt campaign, which suggested the former K-1 WGP winner as the best replacement for Alistair Overeem. Mark Hunt will now face Stefan Struve on the same card (UFC 146) looking to prove he's a force to be reckoned with in the UFC Heavyweight division.
UFC 146 will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 26th, featuring all-heavyweight fight card, with highly-anticipated bouts such as Roy Nelson vs. Antonio Silva, Shane del Rosario vs. Gabriel Gonzaga, and Mark Hunt vs. Stefan Struve.

Horrible news... I was looking forward to that fight so much... I don't understand why they waited until 3 days before Overeem appears before the commission to decide to replace him. They could have waited for him to explain his situation... Mir is no match for JDS even though it would be stupid of JDS to overlook Mir.
Overeem vs Velasquez could be awesome, really awesome. I hope it happens.
If the Reem is found "innocent," I wouldn't be surprised that Dana gives him the title shot. We saw it this repeated reshuffling of cards in the late Diaz-Condit-JSP case...I'm sure you all remember how many times Anthony Pettis was promised then denied a title shot...Dana White changing his mind is nothing new...Hope the Reem's hearing goes well...It'd be such a shame if he's proven to be a cheater...
I like Mir a lot and I want him to get a title shot , but he doesnt have enough time to get ready for JDS. JDS will probably destroy him like Carwin did :S
But well anything can happen. Maybe Mir improved a lot...
I love both fighters and I just hope JDS wont embarassed Mir .
I d like to see a competitive match and not a one side beating.
I feel sorry for Cain after preparing for this matchup,
Obviously Dana knows what the outcome of the hearing will be after reading Allistairs defence and speaking to his lawyers.
But on the other hand, If Reem somehow gets cleared, I agree that overeem vs cain would be awesome.
I think Mir thinks his standup has grown enough to accept the fight there. If so, that will be his undoing. Mir's best chance is to take it to the ground.
Mir's ground game is to JDS's ground game as JDS's stand up is to Mir's stand up (complicated, but think about it).
JDS will win because they will both agree to keep it standing (Mir's mistake)
JDS first round K.O
under a minute!
I wanted to see JDS vs. Overeem so badly and I wanted to believe Overeem was legit just as much, I'm incredibly surprised and annoyed that he would be so stupid to actually juice after all of these allegations.
Well if he has been juicing for years and not getting caught he would most DEF do it for the biggest fight of his MMA career so far. Juice has a huge psychological influence as well as physical, and he's probably used to going through training camps juiced up. People who regularly juice feel weak, lethargic, more injury prone etc when off it.
I just think that he would understand that the UFC will actually properly test him unlike Strikeforce before Zuffa and Japan. Alistair has always come off very intelligent but this seems to point of the opposite of intelligence.
the man gained about 50 lbs in 4 years and about 10 or 15 is in his head.... come on now. i don't think "Horse meat" does that to you
how do you weak my comment?
you suck!!!!
i clicked the weak tab next to your name. i dont know how everyone else is doing it, but thats how i weaked you.
Sorry Hmadrigal, but Hunter made me laugh!
Alistair used to be one of my favourite fighters but I don't know how I feel about him now, after ruining one of the most anticipated fights in a long time and being completely dishonest.
I've said it many times before but I want to wait for his statement or something similar before I lay my final judgement after him, I know it sounds arrogant but I still find it hard to believe he would be so stupid to do this and especially get caught.
so he really eats horse meat and theres a perfect explanation for all this mess...
Agreed I honestly see Mir getting layed out, but who knows its mma
Yup, Mir will be staring at the ceiling by the end of the first round.
Yup who would have thought that Mir would have both the first TKO and submission finish over Big Nog in a short time...anything can happen.
Disappointed with the cancellation of the the original fight but this is still a top name and a very interesting fight.
While I find it interesting as Mir definitely could submit Mir, in all reality, I'm expecting Mir (my fav HW) to get KTFO in the first round. Mir is either to proud of his boxing skills and likes to test his striking or he simply ignores the fact he has trouble taking a punch - to be fair to Mir it is only the more powerful hitters like Carwin, Lesnar (the guy has power) and Nog that have dropped him lately but JDS is just as powerful and a far better striker than all of them.
Now I'm no strategist or expert myself but IMO Mir's only chance is to get a TD or get it to the ground anyway he can, even pull guard, and keep it there. He may have a chance of doing what he did to Cro Cop with a clinch game as I expect him to be bigger and stronger than JDS but I think Junior is just to prepared and good to be caught up by wall and stall.
I love Frank Mir and hope he does well in probably his last title fight but JDS is something else.
I think Mir will be knocked into oblivion in a relatively short time in this fight but I think that Mir is gaining an advantage(not that it will matter) by the switch up.
JDS was training for a striker and now he is fighting someone that is a ground specialist.
Mir was training for someone with great striking that would be able to keep the fight standing and he is now fighting a striker that will keep the
fight standing...the problem in both scenarios is that he may not want to strike with either.
JDS is going to destroy Mir... Mir has a weak chin!! if big nog almost KOd him imagine what will JDS hand will do to him.
my prediction: one big uppercut to the chin and that will be it... nevertheless he could chopp one of JDS limbs if he makes a mistake but i doubt that will happen
great match up for junior!!
Yes, post surgery Big Nog. Who wrecked the face of both of his opponents in the first round of the fights following his three surgeries. How many people will Nog have to do that to before people realize he's a lot more powerful now than he was a few years ago?
Look at all the card shuffling going on because of yet another fighter thinking he's smarter than the system. Solution is simple Dana White : on a first offense you drop 10 spots in the rankings and take six months to think about your actions too. Overeem (or whomever) would have to work his way back up and forfeit lucrative paydays. That would change the devil may care attitude of some of these fighters. Second offense puts you right back at the bottom of the heap as the lowest ranked and poorly paid fighter, having to work even harder to work your way back to the main-card. Third offense is a third strike .....
grab a mop , you're now cleaning the stands jackass
It's crazy what actually happens in MMA...Thiago Silva gets caught for juicing and then is offered a main event when he returns...things that make you go hmmm.
bad... veeery bad news.... damn it Dana you truly suck... i dont think this match will last long and I already see the excuses coming.. well I was training for Velazquez and I didnt have time to prepare for JDS... and I would not be surprised if Dana changes his mind again and puts Hunt vs Velazquez... o his all thing of you just not simply jump to title contention is going down the toilet...
The worst news ever!! I really thought Dana White was smarter than that!!! UFC 146 screw it!
Worst possible news. Hopefully Overeem gets cleared to fight and Dana changes his mind. Everybody knows what will happen to Mir if he faces Dos Santos. He will get dropped and finished on the ground, face down and bloodied.
If JDS has a brain in his head, he will not follow Mir to the ground. Nog is his BJJ mentor, a much better grappler than JDS himself, had Mir almost unconscious and still got his arm broken. There's no reason why JDS wouldn't just stand back, force Mir to stand back up and go for the knockout.
Very Sharp ^^^
Dana White is such a nut stain. He had said when the failed test first came out that Mir wasn't gonna fight for the title and now he's saying he is. I don't know why people believe a word he says anymore. I don't know how the nsac works so exactly how much time they would need to decide after tuesday is probably why he gave JDS a change in opponent. I like Frank Mir but no way in hell is he gonna stand a chance.
Yep the 2 faced money hugger did it again!
lol mir nearly got ko'd by nog, and got ktfo by carwin. now hes fighting the best knockout artist in mma today.... yea good luck with that.
without overeem the HW division is pretty lame again. Only 2 top guys JDS and cain. they need to bring in more contenders like barnett and cormier as well as fun fighters like kharitonov
Fedor vs Cain!!!! But think it will be Fedor vs Pedro Rizzo.
This news blows! but what did you expect? what possible excuse could overeem have for testing positive for that much testosterone!? Lets say by some miracle he's cleared and gets a licence, then he beats JDS, then what? he's gonna lose massive respect from everyone because everyone will know how he got there
I wish I could poor this news over a million times. damn...... this sucks!
ironic how Mir`s roles have switched from his last fight!
Sounds like they heard Reems reasoning and they didn't like what they heard. Btw I love when Dana said something won't happen and then does a180 on his stance
yes sir, hes been dropped from the card
blows man.
unless 'the hammer' has confessed something and mr.white is in the know, i hope there's a good reason like reem's kfc was spiked or something.
that would be egg on white's face for making this decision so close to the hearing date...he's obviosly done this out of spite as in 'dont f**k with me' attitude, as he does.
hope al pulls through on this with a legit reasoning...either way, always have and always will be a reem fan !!!
You are the retarded MMA fan we can do without.
go f**k yourself you pig-f**ker
your mother has aids and your dad is f**king his dead brother ... and you sir are a paedophile
You are on Probation Mr. Daviesman. Please restrain your comments.
lol
whatever happened to freedom of speach.
its ok for him to call me a retard though
god bless america
As funny as it sounds, this probably isn't that big a change for Mir strategy-wise. Both Cain and JDS are fast powerful strikers who don't throw many kicks, so Mir would probably need to brush up on his boxing defense and look to take it to the ground. If his strategy was to survive the standup and get it to the ground to submit his opponent, then that remains unchanged. I think it would be harder to get JDS to the ground, since Cain would be more willing to go there for the finish, JDS wants to strike with him. However, I think Mir has a better chance of submitting JDS than Cain, and has less to worry about in the way of GnP if he pulls guard on JDS.
The big change for Mir is adjusting to the different punching styles. If he comes in prepared for Cain's hook-heavy style, then JDS will put him away in short order with straights and uppercuts. Hopefully, a month will be enough time to prepare for that and keep it interesting.
I think this is a more interesting fight than Cain vs. Mir. JDS is probably more worried about Mir's ground game than his most recent opponents, so he'll probably start off cautiously and try to get Mir's timing rather than starting off aggressive. I think he'll probably take the first round and move in in the second, whereupon the fight will end quickly by either knockout or submission. I'd give JDS 2 or 2.5 to 1 odds in favor of him winning. Don't count Mir out though. He can still finish anyone on any given night.
On the bright side, I don't think this fight has a chance in hell of going to decision.
Are you really saying Big Nog has harder hands then JDS? Mir gave a boring fight with Cro Cop at the end of Cro Cop's career. Didn't see his fight with Nelson so not gonna comment on that but was in trouble against Big Nogs hands the second fight. I like Mir but he couldn't withstand Carwin's hands and he's not gonna be able to stand JDS's either.
Allistair Overeem vs JDS would be an awesome. But what it is ...Mir not a bad ideal i see him improve a lot with more confidence coming off some win .Tho
I'm surprised he got caught, not that he's juicing but that he got caught.
You're supposed to be a professional Alistair !!
we want Fedor !! egghead
