It will help him it will get Silva to be agrresive and close the distance, which will put Silva within Chael's takedown range. That is Chael's best strategy to win the fight.
i dont think it matters either way, its gonna end badly for poor sonnen...i suppose silva might give him a choice between the franklin ko and the griffin ko? bye-bye chael...
I think it'll help him, but I dont think it'll help him enough to win the fight. Sonnen will take Silva down pretty much effortlessly but I don't see Sonnen improving enough on the ground to not get subbed.
Maia just talk about taking back home one of the spider legs and Anderson just lost his temper and went crazy.
I think it is likely to affect him. Plus his cardio, last time I checked, was not that great. He got use to finish fights or get out with a large majority decision. With Sonnen layin on him for 15 minutes or more, wispering outrageous loads of BS in his ears, even without damaging G&P, Silva could loose it again and loose....
No and I will tell you why.... As my friend pony above has pointed out, supposedly he was upset with Maia, so one may think that is evidence that Silva is sensitive to trash-talk, BUT thats only if u believe that story.... Personally, I believe that was only an excuse that Silva used as he scrambled to explain his actions that night. I really feel he was just over confident and bored with the match... I mean sure, he was showboating because he was displeased by Maia breaking the "Brazilian code of honor," or whatever they like to call it, but I think it was just his way of showing up Maia without knocking the bejesus out of a Brazilian.
If you watch the interview of Silva on a brazilian talk show (dont remember the name) he straight up admits that he said he was offended because he had to sell the fight. That's why his comments after the fight didnt match up with his comments in the post fight conference. He was in the dog house with Dana so he had to do something.
When it comes to the fight with Maia, he got in to Maias head and dominated the first 3 rounds, and then the last 2 rounds he didnt put himself in any danger and went on to a decision. Plain and simple. Machida does it all the time. Did anyone else notice that he actually was going in to Machidas stance and being evasive the same way? (in round 4 if i remember correctly). He knows against a BJJ fighter you could be caught at any time, so why stay close enough for them to grab on to you? That's why it's happened in the past with BJJ opponents.
That's also why he keeps saying that viewers dont understand and hopefully they will some day. He's a champion whos job is to win, that's what he gets paid the most for, and that's what he did.
He didnt break any rules, which makes Danas response one thing I actually do not agree with. "Dont hate the player, hate the game". Even the judges review of the fight said Silva did nothing wrong - "Boxers cruise thru the last few rounds to squeeze out a decision all the time" - that was their words.
I doubt it will affect Silva - I think his goal is to make up for his last fight. Chael´s trash talk is entertaining promotion; good for the fight; good for the event; good for the ufc but I think the moment the cage closes it will backfire at him - I`m not a fighter so maybe I´m talking out of my ass but I just don´t see how putting yourself under such extra pressure will help your game!?
I think it is getting to him, and there is still quite a bit of time before the fight... every interview chael does is pretty much a stand up comedy towards Silva, if it doesnt get to him, then Silva is truly a robot killing machine
That makes me wonder....what the hell does Sonnen do IF he gets owned by Silva after talking all that s$#t? I wouldn't think he would be able to show his face in the Octagon ever again! He seems like the type of person to make a truckload of excuses as to why the fight didn't go his way
its gonna make Silva frustrated but hes a smart fighter when hes in the octagon and he wont let it get to his head from the start. if he stuffs Sonnens takedowns and picks him apart on the feet he might start taunting but not cuz of the talk but cuz he loves to do that. Then he will bow down to Sonnen to mock him if he wins like the others. I think Sonnen can outwork Silva and win by decision.
Do I think it will have an effect on AS in the fight - no.
However, if the question was simply - Do you think Sonnen has gotten under Silva's skin? Then I'd say, yes.
I do not believe, that the trash talk (by CL) will play a role in Silva's performance; positive or negative; he's too much the professional. However and with that said, it does seem to have gotten under his skin; at least a little.
Actually the question is pretty clear.... It says "Do you think that getting under Anderson Silva's skin will help Chael Sonnen on August 7th?" How is that poorly worded?
Ok, so u think it will get under his skin as u have said, but the question already assumes that.... However, you do not believe it will help him in their fight.... Then why did u vote yes? It asks pretty clearly if u think it will help in the fight. It says August 7th, which is the fight.... I dunno how u got confused there.
“Do you think that getting under Anderson Silva's skin will help Chael Sonnen on August 7th?”
The question asks – about “getting”. You say it “assumes” that (he has). No it doesn’t. You may want to think that’s what it says, but it “clearly” doesn’t.
Yes, it is a “fact”, that Sonnen is “trying” to get under his skin, but there is no confirmation (other then the one you are reading into it), that he has done so; been successful.
How do we determine Sonnen’s success at getting under Silva’s skin?
In order for your “assumption” to be correct / proven, Silva himself would have to acknowledge that Sonnen had been or was, successful. Then and only then, could the (original) question, be postulated. And should Sonnen win, some will argue that it had helped. Concordantly, should CS lose, some will argue that the tactic had not helped or failed.
The only way we will know, is when (The) Spider speaks – post fight.
As to my post (the object of your concern) – voting yes or no, failed to satisfy my thought(s) on the question. Subsequently, I voted (in the affirmative), by selecting the answer (which I thought) best suited the question; I posted about it. It was no deeper or ponderous, then that.
Concluding – I hope this clarifies the matter for you and I thank you for (your continued) reading my post(s) and taking the time to comment. Perhaps, at some future date, I shall take the time to read something you have posted. As of yet, I have not done so; my apologies.
Even if it doesn't help Chael by psyching Anderson out, it helps Chael because this is the kind of shit he feeds off, he loves it and the better his head is going into the fight the better chance he stands.
Plus I like the comment above from a222g - if Silva comes in pissed off, there's a better chance of him falling into Sonnen's takedown range and then he's gonna get "dumped on his head", to quote Sonnen.
****ing stoked on this fight. Chael has the best chance of anyone Silva has faced thus far in the UFC.
I really couldn't care less about all the hype that leads up to a fight, because it (almost) never means a damn thing once the cage door closes and the beel rings. I do hope Sonnen humilates Silva for no other reason that I'm sick of his antics, and silly-ass games. I don't really care for Sonnen personally, but he's the only hope I have of Silva retiring....
Sonnen said when that music hits, its all buisiness. So that being said I think if sonnen has any shining moments in the fight it will start messing with Silva, but if sonnen were trash talk WHILE fighting in the cage, I dont think it would help him in that case.
@Spyridon: He didn't imitated Machida because of the defensive advantage that may bring, he did so because he was putting on a show. If you look closely, he imitated various fighters and fighting stances - all this show was kind of a tribute to Ali, his hero - not saying I agree or aprove, just stating what he said in an interview.
As for the thread itself: This trash talk wont affect a Martial arts "master" of the caliber of Anderson Silva. I understand Sonnen is trying to make Silva lose his calm but to what purpose? Even if he succeeded, what would be the advantage? Sonnen will want to take it to the ground and his best chance to win (IMO ofc), is relying on Silva being passive and letting Sonnen "lay" on top of him for 25 minutes because Sonen doesnt end fights, he grinds out decisions. So, is it in his best interest having Silva fighting aggressively...?
My opinion: Sonnen will have more than he asked and has soon as he enters the ring and starts to face Anderson he will know that, but by then it will be time to Bite the Bullet and pray for the best...

if anything it will motivate silva to fight to the best of his abilities and make a fool out of sonnen on his feet. or, sonnen will get lucky and take silva down.
what happened last time silva got taken down by an amazing wrestler? that wrestler got chocked out. what was his name again? oh yea, dan f ucking henderson.
Did it work when gary..(whats his last name?) disrespected Michael jordan in seattle vs chicago back in the day? Did it help (whats his name?) when he annoyed the hell out of muhammad ali back in the day?
No, when you're skill is inferior to your competition, making them dislike you more doesn't improve your chances, and it's worse here because his ONLY chance of winning is to open up his biggest weakness(submissions).
Someone, somewhere, please think about that before you jump on sonnens tip. There's a reason barely anyone heard about him before he opened his mouth. How canibus selling these days?

People will vote no automatically with no thought.

Oh totally, because we all KNOW chael is such a ground wizard.
No, getting under his skin is just modivation to get you knocked out faster...
exactly, right now sonnen is poking a lion in the face with a stick 5 feet away. not smart on his part.
If pleasant polite Maia had that kind of effect on Anderson, certainly Chael has got him on the brink of his sanity.
My thoughts exactly...whether or not that will allow Chael to win the fight is anyone's guess. Either way, I think he has a mental edge.
Of course it could help.
Maia just talk about taking back home one of the spider legs and Anderson just lost his temper and went crazy.

I am so frustrated!!! I tried to write you an argumented contradictory answer but i was enable to pull it off....
I wish I could write better english and explain you why Anderson was really pissed during Maia fight.
Shit... I ll try to find a french website and throw this debate around to convince somebody else. ahah!

The question was, will it help him. No, it won't. Anderson is going to hurt him.
Nope....not this time. I'm pulling for the Congressman!

obliviously if he get embarrass, all that trash talk would have been for nothing, but if he wins,he will look like a genius.

He'll probably pull a Ken Shamrock and tell him how hes so great.
No....because hes going to grab sonnens fingers, turn his hand palm side up and raise it up high just like his Sensei Steven Segal taught him.
its gonna make Silva frustrated but hes a smart fighter when hes in the octagon and he wont let it get to his head from the start. if he stuffs Sonnens takedowns and picks him apart on the feet he might start taunting but not cuz of the talk but cuz he loves to do that. "grandma's voice" I'll place $50 on the clean, cut, white boy.
Anderson was NOT angry at Maia. If he was angry he would have beat Maia's ass, it's that simple people.
He will beat the **** out of Sonnen for his insolence.
Even if it doesn't help Chael by psyching Anderson out, it helps Chael because this is the kind of shit he feeds off, he loves it and the better his head is going into the fight the better chance he stands.

Well nothing else seems to work against Anderson. Might as well try mental warfare lol.
It will help him get murderd in the ring. hope Silva does a Dan Handerson . remember the Bisbin fight?
