As a big fan of BJ Penn, I really held a grudge against Frankie Edgar and had relatively no interest in the UFC 125 main event. It was a last minute PPV buy and I had a bad feeling in my stomach I would regret it, but I was pleasantly surprised when the UFC kicked off the New Year with a bang.  Not only was UFC 125 a great card as a whole, the main event was one of the most back and forth fights I’ve seen in a long time(ironically to the two fighters I thought were the most boring in the lightweight division). I couldn’t have been more impressed with both fighters, but Frankie Edgar showed the heart of a champion by surviving a first round thrashing by Gray Maynard. The New Jersey native went from wobbling like a three legged chair, to slamming his opponent on his head less than five minutes later. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

Compustrike.com recorded Gray Maynard landing 44 strikes in round one while Edgar only landed 11. But through rounds two-five The Answer landed 107 strikes and Maynard only landed 55. Edgar also managed to get four out of seven take down attempts while stuffing 10 of the 12 takedowns attempted by the bully. Frankie Edgar once again shows drastic improvement as a mixed martial artist with a spectacular display of heart, chin, and recovery. Although the fight was a “draw” Edgar has won a slew of fans with his UFC 125 and shutting the mouths of a slew of critics (including myself).

I set my alarm and was up from 3am. I can't remember a fight I was so transfixed upon. Absolutely amazing. It's so much better watching it live rather than the next day.

This li'l guy's been earning for a while now, just it's taking time for some to come round to him. Even his domination of BJ weren't enough for some. To come back against someone as good as Maynard the way he did after that first round is pure quality.
