Chute Boxe prospect Vinicius Quieroz released by UFC following failed drug test

Following on from a disappointing UFC debut, Chute Boxe fighter Vinicius "Spartan" Quieroz has been released by the promotion, following a failed drug test. As there are no governing bodies in the United Kingdom, the UFC held there on tests. Of the 6 fighters tested, including main event fighters Michael Bisping and Yoshihiro Akiyama, Quieroz was the only one to fail.

Marshall Zelaznik, the UFC's UK President, revealed that Quieroz forfeited an undisclosed discretionary bonus from the UFC and has also been released from the promotion. As a result, the UFC also have an obligation to inform the Nevada state commission.

Overall, The Spartan is 5-2. His UFC loss, a 3rd round submission to Rob Broughton, ended his 4 fight win streak.

Speaking to MMA JUNKIE, the UFC's Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, Marc Ratner, spoke about the UFC's own tests:

"The UFC enforces the same rules and regulations as the Nevada State Athletic Commission and takes this responsibility to the fighters and the sport very seriously."

Quantities of Stanozolol (also sold under the brand name Winstrol) were found in the fighters system following the fight. It is a popular body building drug, which should only be used when prescriped to treat anaemia and hereditary angioedema. MMA fighters who have also been caught with amounts of the drug in their system include Phil Baroni, Chris Leben and Tim Sylvia.

Was he cut because he lost and tested positive? I'm just wondering because Chael tested positive and he didn't get released.

Well, there is a difference here and its more than just status... For one, he got caught cheating in his very first fight, a fight that he lost. As far as the comparison to Sonnen, Chael has an appeal scheduled still and until that has happened any punishments would be on hold. If there will even be any additional penalty outside of what is handed down by the Commission.

Big difference between a top contender in Sonnen and this new guy. Should they just go ahead and cut Leben and Carwin too while they are at it?

    Get a clue.

Carwin has not tested positive as far as I know, and yeah if they are cutting a guy based on the uses of PEDs then they should do it to everyone elses in the same case regardless of their status...

I think it should be fair across the board. All cheaters should get the same punishment.

I agree Anderson is hyped more than people realize. Go ahead and list all the fighters names he beat for me. Oh yea, Cote, (cut from UFC real worthy opponent there) Chael was almost unknown until that fight by the noob population. Irving? Forrest? whatever

anderson is hyped too much? but what about your boy shogun? in the ufc hes put in 2 good performances (machida) he lost against forrest (who anderson destroyed) and looked really bad whilst beating two washed up old guys...in pride he was very close to losing to overeem, and DID lose to lil nog

then look at what andersons done...beat everybody, and u left a few names off ur list, such as franklin twice, marquardt, hendo, bjj ace maia, leben etc...nd cote got cut from the ufc i agree, but didnt coleman and chuck get cut too? it sounds like your only taking on points that support your argument...you dont have to like anderson but to say he hasnt fought anyone is crazy

So the reasoning to keep Sonnen around while other guys are being cut is that just because he was so succesfull against Silva while he was juiced he is safe?...

BTW he ended up getting submitted just like always does...

Not that I disagree, but his appeal is still to come.... Any punishment that they may or may not hand down would likely be on hold until the final outcome.

thats how thin the mw division is atmo. belfort joining makes it a bit better but they parade sonnen as top contender when in most other divisions he'd have been cut already
